UNITED NATIONS (AP) - Six world powers reached agreement Thursday on a package of new sanctions against Iran that include an embargo on arms exports and an asset freeze on more individuals and companies associated with Tehran’s nuclear and missile programs.

The draft resolution hammered out by the five permanent Security Council nations - the United States, Russia, China, Britain and France - and Germany will now be presented to the 10 non-permanent Security Council nations who have been left out of negotiations.

“We have an agreement and I will introduce a text on behalf of the six,” Britain’s U.N. Ambassador Emyr Jones Parry said after a meeting of ambassadors from the six countries.

These small little cuts to the Iranian economy will make a few uncomfortable in Iran. The only sanction that will really work will be an embargo on refined gasoline. Unfortunatly this policy might make US citizens and West Europeans uncomfortable due to a possilbe Arab oil retaliation and a disruption of the oil markets. Our professional political class hasn’t the courage to implement a policy that would really work. Rather than spreading the burden around, it is politically easier to send a small fraction of young americans to bear the brunt of stopping these radical Islamist.
