Anybody buying an AK-
If you’re getting one for $400 it’s 99% likely a knock-off. Hungarian, Chicom, Bulgarian and Czech SUCK. Make sure it’s a Russian or a Romanian or else you are playing with an inferior rifle. Regardless, speaking from several AK ownerships (past) I suggest getting a ruger mini-30 (same round) instead. About the same price range; but handles better, I’ve found to be more accurate, more compatible with optics and accessories (the PSO system for the AKs/SKS etc also SUCK) and American manufacture to boot.

April 15th, 2007 at 3:05 amIt is an interesting, if ugly, contingency that “civil war” as Beck calls it would look very different here than in Europe where only the outlaws have guns. Whereas I certainly plan on having a few 12-guage pumps, a drawer full of 1911 A-frames and a couple long-distance rifles handy, I hardly think a mass of well-armed and willing good old boys who are plainly not connected tactically can do much to thwart a much smaller, though VERY connected network of insurgents. The first step would be to establish civilian militias, but watch how fast the feds would jump down your throat. Our enemies, on the other hand, know each other by name, face and residence. They meet once a week (guess on which day) and they haven’t anything to fear from the PC-police, who work for them, not us.
Any thoughts, gentlemen?

April 15th, 2007 at 7:22 amMeh, my newly acquired M1 Garand bests both the M16 and AK-47 if ya ask me, that .30-06 kicks some serious ass. The AK I know is extremely robust, and potent in CQB. The M16 is very accurate (so great that I remember the MSM types were concerned that Marines were executing the enemy in Fallujah due to so many headshots) and has great penetration. But, the M1 has them both beat on stopping power, and that’s what’s most important for me. Wish I could bring it into battle, but alas the supply chain wouldn’t favor that. I hope we do improve the M16/M4’s reliability and stopping power with the new 6.8mm SPC (or simililar), and the improved upper receivers that Barrett (M468) and H&K (M416/417 have developed. That being said, there’s no substitute for a skilled marksman, who takes good care of his weapon.

It’s a wonderful rifle, but cannot compete with the M4 in tight quarters.

April 15th, 2007 at 3:11 pmIf the job is kicking a door and clearing an Iraqi house, you’re already IN CQC. Same deal with home defense, in which case a shotgun or some kind of wadcutters, HP, etc. are preferable by far.
And for the record, guys hit 500 meter targets with their m16s and m4s every day. There rally isn’t much difference in range/accuracy in my opinion (having shot all of the above for years).
