BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) May 4, 2007 — American soldiers discovered a girls school being built north of Baghdad had become an explosives-rigged “death trap,” the U.S. military said Thursday.
The plot at the Huda Girls’ school in Tarmiya was a “sophisticated and premeditated attempt to inflict massive casualties on our most innocent victims,” military spokesman Maj. Gen. William Caldwell said.
Soldiers found rounds and explosives in what the military is calling a sophisticated “attempt to inflict massive casualties.”
The military suspects the plot was the work of al Qaeda, because of its nature and sophistication, Caldwell said in an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer.
The plot was uncovered Saturday, when troopers in the Salaheddin province found detonating wire across the street from the school. They picked up the wire and followed its trail, which led to the school. Once inside, they found an explosive-filled propane tank buried beneath the floor. There were artillery shells built into the ceiling and floor, and another propane tank was found, the military said.
Rounds were placed in front of each classroom and at the end of the hallway. Artillery shells were built into the ceiling.
The wire was concealed with mortar and concrete, and the propane tanks had been covered with brick and hidden underneath the floor, according to a military statement. Soldiers were able to clear the building.
“It was truly just an incredibly ugly, dirty kind of vicious killing that would have gone on here,” Caldwell said.
Iraqi contractors were responsible for building the school, which was intended to bring in hundreds of girls.
The wire ran along the wall of the hall. Wiring led to a stairwell, where a large propane tank was buried.
“Given the care and work put into emplacing this IED, it is likely it had been planned for a long time” and it is thought that “the IED was not intended to be set off until the building was occupied,” the military said.
Authorities intend to question the Iraqis involved in the school’s construction.
An explosive-filled propane tank was buried underneath the floor, and a second tank was buried at the base of a stairwell.

A U.S. military commander said Thursday that an al Qaeda in Iraq militant believed to be involved in the kidnapping of two Americans, journalist Jill Carroll and Christian activist Tom Fox, has been killed. I’ve got my PT squared away, although I’m definitely more ready mentally than physically. I expect to be put on a fat tray, although I’ll probably be taken off of it when the time’s right. The way I see it, the more IT (incentive training) I get, the harder I will become; plus, I’ve got fuel reserves when all the skinny dudes are running on empty!
I found out that one of my mother’s uncles was a Marine. And my father was a expert rifleman in Army OCS, but he only had to shoot at 400 yards; I told him that I’d be damned if I got anything less, although I would be officially “better” than he was.
I’m going in open contract; with 99 ASVAB and a 116 DLAB, and my eligibility for a top secret, pray the USMC finds a way to use the most of what I have to offer. I was told to not be pessimistic–that they need guys with those scores who can get clearances. We shall see!
I’ll be winding my posts down a little over the next two days. Shipping day has snuck up on me like diarrhea, but I’m definitely “good to go,” as they say.
I think I’d like to be a religious lay leader… anybody want to tell me what they do exactly (I’ve been told you don’t want to be a scribe or squad leader), and how I would get the job? Also, the 12 guys from my state that flew to Dego had all different MOS promises, we all ended up as 2531’s, Radioman ( was a shortage for some reason)so I hope you get what your “contract” promised. I’m thinking these days they will keep you on track for your MOS training. Pay attention in ITR, as I was Chopped from my unit in Oki, with 200 other mixed MOS’s, to a temporary 0311 for RLT-27 and got to Nam as B/1/27 until the real ones arrived a few weeks later. Then, back as a 2531 to a bastard unit of 5th Marines, 5th Comm. So that “Every Marine a Rifleman” is true no matter the MOS.
And yeah, keep your addy secret from your “friends” at home or you’ll be getting sent Dixe Cups (Sailor hats), Cigars (you’ll have to smoke with a bucket over your head), and love notes on toilet paper to read in front of your platoon, etc. All those infractions are valued at at least 100 push-ups each. .
