Gone, Baghdadi, Gone
According to the iraqi government, Abu Omar Al-Baghdadi, the head of the top Al Qaeda group in Iraq, was killed today. Now keep in mind, on March 9, the Government reported that he had been arrested in the town of Abu Ghraib. That didn’t seem to pan out. But this time reports are coming from multiple sources.
Interestingly, against the backdrop of the back to back killings of Al Qaeda’s top two, the dramatic Baghdad bombing campaign dissipated.
The importance of Al-Baghdadi’s death cannot be overstated because he was actually the glue that held together not a single Al Qaeda unit, but the country’s top umbrella group. There is some meritorious argument that Baghdadi was actually Al- Masri’s superior, as Al-Masri was considered a military operations chief, and Al-Baghdadi was the overall military/political/spiritual CEO. By heading the Islamic State of Iraq, Al-Baghdadi supervised the operations of several Al Qaeda groups. Just a week ago, Baghdadi was feverishly trying to reunite Al Qaeda with Sunni tribes that had gone over to the U.S. side.
Guess that didn’t work. It appears that he was in fact killed by Sunni militia.

Update: Al Qaeda has offered a counter-claim that its spokesman Muharib Al-Jubar was killed, but not Baghdadi.

I think that Redstate’s person on the ground in Baghdad’s Green Zone is reporting that it wasn’t al-Baghdadi but in fact was Muharib Abdul Latif. Not sure if that is confirmed anywhere else.

Those are great confidence builders. I think the longest formation run we had in basic was about 23 miles. Our Platoon was leading, we were just motivated all to hell and back, the Senior DI was calling cadence, and when we reached the original halfway point of 5 miles, when he started turning, we kept going straight, we turned into the biggest group of energizer bunnies ever, running and running and running.
The open MOS, I think you will make out fine, the fact that you are going is what counts. Just make sure you get some this weekend, you are in for a long dry spell

In fact I thought things were going quite horribly in 2006 especially. I was eager for a direction change, and with rumsfeld (the actual rumsfeld, i dont want rummy to go anywhere) gone and abizaid gone with fresh blood out there I became hopeful again.
It seems things are going well now, and I find myself excited about the prospect of shutting the insurgency down once and for all.
I only wish we would have had this resolve back in 2004 when I, like many marines from the initial invasion, first showed up in Al Anbar and shit hit the fan.

I have been researching counter-insurgencies for the last year looking for evidence to suggest that there could be sucess in Iraq, In particular i was trying to see if any of the material facts of the Iraqi insurgency were similiar to the philipine insurection which was defeated in 1901-2. Then one bright and shiny day I learned that Gen. Petraeus had begun to implement the same stratagy that Taft used in the phillipines and that the french used in Algeria. I was even further impressed to see references to the philipine strategy in the new counter-insurgency manual. It looks like the US armed forces are winning over the Iraqis, now those of us at home have to win over the american public to avoid a fate similiar to Veitnam.
