Her calling took her to the Marines and is now serving as a dog handler in Al Anabar sniffing out IED’s and other tasks of the most dangerous kind. Was a great article and dispells the attitude that so many of her kind, young men and women, are out of touch. But we really do not have to live with that fear. Why? Just look at all the faces of all those who make up our Armed Forces. They are there beccause of choice. They know what has to be done. And as Rumsfeld said in one of his latter posts, the Marines combat posts are filled because our troops know that we have an enemy that needs to be dealt with. Most reasuring.

The democrats want us to lose, they want this to be like Vietnam, yada, yada, yada. Instead of labeling the democratic party based on a few extremely liberal personalities, let’s talk about the actual issues, not the people. Global War on Terror: it is definitely a real threat contrary to what braindead Edwards said, but what no one wants to talk about is how we are really doing in this war. Part of this answer lies in the answer to this question: Are we creating more enemies than we are defeating? Why all of a sudden are all of these new terrorist plots even being started in the first place? I don’t ever remember hearing about a time in our nation’s history when we have so many of our own citizens trying to revolt against our own government through terrorism. What is causing this? If it is our methods in crusading against worldwide terror that are creating new enemies (ie. Guantanamo), then maybe we should rethink our strategy. In today’s world, the pen is still mightier than the sword, and the battle of ideology has never been more important than today. It is much harder to convince a Muslim extremist of the benevolence of America when we lock Muslim people away without a trial and invade a Muslim country under false pretenses, without provocation. So while we have some victories in foiling these terrorist attacks, is it perhaps a telling sign that these people even want to attack us in greater numbers in the first place?

Even then, the media had a little bit more of a balance between being smart and balanced in reporting world events.

Before Sept 11th, there had never been a devistating foreign terror attack on American soil. It was always directed at our foreign interests. After an attack like Sept 11th, the foreign world realized we weren’t untouchable. We were unprepared. That was our mistake. Our stupidity. Our blindness.

Does any liberal cry baby actually think they give a fuck wether or not you support the war on terror? You are from AMERICA. THEY WOULD GIVE EVERYTHING TO KILL YOU. Poolie, you said that there is a large number of terrorists today, and you are correct. However, this large number represents a miniscule fraction of the total number of Islamic people in the world (about 1.4 Billion people). If you honestly think that all Muslims feel the way Al Qaeda does then you have obviously not talked to any or have not ventured outside of Bumblefuck, USA. This is the same reason why David Koresh is not used as an example of an ideal Christian, or why Tim McVeigh/Jeffrey Dahmer/etc. is not used as an example of a Typical American.
No matter what group you are talking about, Americans, democrats, republicans, Muslims, Christians, there will always be idealougues who stray from the norm and give the group that they are in a bad name. William Jefferson is a perfect example for Dems and Mark Foley for the Repubs. There have been lots of scandals recently involving members of the republican party, does this mean all republicans are corrupt? Probably not. This is the same logic that you can apply to the extremists/terrorists, and you can pick any from the list that you compiled above.
Every single terrorist organization on there is a minority group espousing radical ideas. There will ALWAYS be minority groups such as these fighting for their own cause, right or wrong. As long as the US is the #1 superpower in the world, we will always be a target of some of these groups. You were right when you said that we were blind to the fact that we were highly susceptible to attack. Now that we know, we have to find the best way to deal with those that want to hurt us and our country.
There is no way to know at present what plan will work best unless we hav a crystal ball that can see into the future. However, there are certain things that we are doing abroad that we know are counter-productive, though they may be necessary. Guantanamo is a prime example. It has been criticized from the start and is inflaming hate against us all over the world from our friends and enemies alike. We even learned our lesson because we started taking advantage of clandestine prisons in undisclosed locations to ‘interrogate’ terror supsects. The reason that Guantanamo is operating open is perplexing, we can do everything we do there at these other locations while drawing far less criticism, and yet we persist.
This is what I mean by re-evaluating our strategy. We only recently woke up to this new threat of terrorism on American soil, therefore we must constantly evaluate our progress and make changes when necessary. Historically, we have beaten down our enemies with the sword, but I think this new threat that exists is different from our historical enemy-types and should be dealt with differently. Hence my pen and sword analogy.

At my high school, I am seeing this fatigue and loss of resolve even among my most conservative friends. Liberal kids and the negative slant of the mainstream media that reports casualties and bad news without any understanding of the greater strategic context or the good our brave soldiers accomplish are misleading many of our brightest kids through peer pressure and disinformation. Those of us who know better have to get the word out. Not in forums such as this, where most people are like minded, but in the public eye. The key to changing public opinion is to counter the media with every resource we have to provide a voice of reason in an enviornment dominated with incomplete and biased information.

Thus Mohammad Atta was freed and eventually thanked the US by flying an airplane into Tower One of the World Trade Center . This was reported by many of the American TV networks at the time that the terrorists were first identified.
It was censored in the US from all later reports.

You said that many of the terrorist groups practice Islam, and that the majority of terrorism is done by those who practice Islam. That is true. I’m kind of an analysis minded person so let me throw out some numbers and give you my take on why.
There are 1.3 billion Muslims and 2.1 billion Christians throughout the world out of a total of 6.6 billion people, more than half the population of the planet. In the past 1000 years catalyzed by the crusades, the two religions have pretty much battled it out for the world’s resources. The crusades were about influence and power through reliqion, and the next 700 years was more of the same, just the division and conquering of the world by Christians and Muslims. In the end, we all know what happened. The Christian tribes won the fight, and to the winner go the spoils. So now, the predominantly Western World has an overwhelming majority of wealth and power in the world. Think about how rich the countries of America, UK, and Western Europe are compared with those in Africa, Central and South Asia.
Don’t get my words twisted either. I’m not taking up any of their causes for them, I’m just stating the facts. To present day, Western Civilization has generally overwhelmed and outpaced Eastern Civilization, and that’s why there are more Christians than Muslims. Christians in the West took early advantage of modern weaponry and warfare,in the early days it was gunpowder and horses in modern days it’s rocketry, advanced engineering and medicine, the West is always one step ahead.
Now we have the riches and lifestyle to show for our years of hard work and conquering, the diamond engagement rings, the BMWs, the private resort islands, the fancy clothes, golf, Idol, OJ, Judge Judy, King James, Hollywood, etc. I’m not going to lie and say I don’t appreciate many of these things- I admit that I like golf, poker, music, and many things American that being an American enables me to have and enjoy. I’m not going to deceive myself by saying my god is any better than anyone elses. I’m here and I’m who I am because my great grandfathers had bigger and better guns than anybody else, because they got here first, and because they held on to what they had. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense, why extremist Muslims hate Christians and the Western World so much.
Fast forward to present day, based on the 2006 edition of the Economist World in Figures Data, the only predominantly Muslim countries in the top 25 ranked countries by GDP are Turkey at number 22 and Saudi Arabia at number 24. Together they combine to make up 1.4% of the the top 25 countries combined and only 4.2% of just the US GDP. Then if you look at the bottom of the scale, all countries in Africa- Burundi, Ethiopia, Congo, Liberia, Malawi, all predominantly Muslim and all poor as piss. So essentially what happened is that Christians and the West got rich while the Muslims and everybody else got left behind in the desert. Now they are generally a pretty pissed off people and personally I don’t blame them, we’ve been beating them down for over 1000 years. A big difference between now and 1000 years ago is that now, it’s easy to cause mayhem with a small number of people and some good technology (ie. a Boeing 757), no more armies of 100s of thousands of people are needed.
This is the history of the conflict in a nutshell, and why there are many more Islamic terrorists than there are Christian terrorists. What reasons do Christians have to terrorize, when they’ve been winning all along?

BUMMER CAMP: Authorities cite connections between a secretive
upstate camp called Islamberg and Pakistani cleric Mubarak Ali
June 4, 2007 — A remote Muslim commune nestled in the Catskill Mountains has come under the scrutiny of state and federal authorities for possible ties to terrorism, according to law-enforcement sources.
Officials say Islamberg - a wooded, 70-acre encampment in upstate Tompkins, about three hours north of the city - acts as the headquarters for an outfit called Muslims of the Americas, widely believed to be a front for Jamaat al-Fuqra, founded by radical Pakistani cleric Mubarak Ali Gilani.
Reports of gunfire and military-style physical training at the camp have led some investigators to believe that the group’s members are preparing for homegrown jihad.
According to one account, a neighbor said he has seen commune members dressed in Port Authority uniforms.
Al-Fuqra members have been suspects in assassinations and firebombings in the United States, authorities said, and an associate of the group, Rodney Hampton-el, was jailed in 1996 for plotting to bomb New York bridges and tunnels.
Gilani is the extremist who Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl was reportedly trying to meet in Pakistan when he was abducted and beheaded.
Gilani started the organization in 1980, when he came to America and began preaching at a Brooklyn mosque.
After Gilani returned to Pakistan, the American group he started entrenched itself in a number of rural outposts, according to authorities.
The feds have alleged that some group members have been sent to Pakistan and Afghanistan to receive terrorist training.
One Islamberg resident denied the charge.
“This is my country,” the resident said. “I love this country. I did a year in the bush in Vietnam for this country.”
The resident, who wouldn’t give his name, was wearing traditional Islamic garb when he intercepted a Post reporter seeking a tour of the camp.
The camp, which sits off a dirt road, appears to be little more than a collection of ramshackle homes and trailers.
The resident admitted that Gilani was the spiritual head of Muslims of the Americas but denied the existence of al-Fuqra.
The resident called Gilani “a reformer.”
“But some people don’t reform,” he said. “They do a lot of foolishness in [Gilani’s] name.”
Asked whether commune members kept weapons at the camp, the resident said, “We got guns up here just like everyone else got guns. We’re American citizens.”

The American Dream—Now Obsolete?
Years ago, immigrants came to this country to begin a new and better life. They believed in the American Dream: the idea that through hard work, courage and determination anyone could achieve prosperity. This and other work-ethic values were passed on to successive generations.
The American Dream did not immediately pan out for most immigrants, but their diligence and willingness to sacrifice for their families became an investment that yielded dividends in following generations. Life became much easier for their sons and daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who (because of their parents) were able to earn college degrees and pursue successful professions—engineering, finance, medicine, law, etc. It was once common for every new generation to aspire to live better than its parents did.
Becoming an American meant learning another language; learning and obeying the laws and customs of the land; embracing the U.S. over native countries and siding with America in war, including volunteering for military combat. Many believed that fighting for one’s country was a sure way to prove that his heart, soul and future were vested in it.
But today, the American Dream has radically changed—and some would argue shattered.
Many immigrants come to the U.S. to find a better life, while others come strictly for employment, sending their wages back home to their families in the native lands.
Foreigners once came to America to become Americans, to be “Americanized.” They instilled this desire in their children as they assimilated into society. Their culture fused into the greater American culture, which became the Great Melting Pot.
And that, many argue, is precisely why so many who come to the U.S. no longer desire to assimilate. They fear losing their national culture and traditions, their identity. And so they cling to their languages and customs, even to the point of expecting—even insisting—that street signs and driver’s tests and government forms be given in their native language. Speaking, reading and writing in English—once considered necessary to fulfilling the American Dream—is now viewed as obsolete, intrusive, even an infringement upon one’s “right” to live however he or she may choose.
The United States is a nation that values the rights of the individual. One can freely speak against the policies of the president—even spew verbal attacks on his character—without fear of being arrested, imprisoned, tortured, executed or made to “disappear” without a trace.
Ironically, those same “rights” are being used to tear down, rip apart and demolish confidence in the American system of governance. Respect for law, order and authority is at an all-time low. A cultural war of opposing ideologies is being waged, polarizing government and dividing the nation.

Several things I noticed to be true. There has always been an amount of terrorism always present in these “Islamic Extremist” countries. There also has been a major lack of media coverage concerning the beheadings, murders, and torture of persons in the Islamic nations.
I blame several things for this. What media personality really wants to die for their story? Isn’t it easier to just make up something that corresponds with what everyone else already thinks, then embelish it a little to make a good story out of hear/say. The media is a powerful tool. Most of our ladies and gentlemen in the Armed Forces learn of their future deployments via CNN. Yet, CNN wont tell them about the details they are going to be enduring. Only of the worst case scenarios. Degrading not only the Men and Women of the Armed Forces, but also creating support for left wing influence. Cut/Run, Redeployment, Pulling Out, Surrender. This is all a big thing that the media hopes to accomplish. After all, all media has a bias based on who is doing the reporting. They might even be telling the truth (sometimes), but when one reporter says 34 civilians, 20 insurgents were killed and we lost 33 of our own in a battle, they probably wont be telling you that the 34 civilans were killed by insurgents.
No news broadcast can give you the full picture or scale of things. Asking a Marine in uniform how he feels about being over there will only give you his side. Asking an Insurgent will only give you his side. Asking an Iraqi civilian that lives there will only give you his side. Asking the CNN anchor of the day their side will only give you 1/4 of all 3.
As far as previous media coverage of the area. Well Reagan saw how bad things were there in the Mid East way back when. It scared the dog snot out of him. Remember Beirut? I don’t know a Marine alive who doesn’t think about Beirut when they are in Iraq. Mainly because of the salty dogs reminding us, but also reflection on history. We hadn’t returned till Bush. (I don’t count Clinton, BHD was a failure and a bad call on his behalf) The media from those areas are sketchy at best because the whole region seems void of anything technologically comparable to the civilized world. Yet, there are plenty of examples in Britain, London, France, and Germany media newscasts. These are areas that recieved bombings on a regular basis from Radical Islam.
On a last note. Try looking up the keywords Honor Killing in google. The events you will witness will make you tremble. Now think about all the crazy things thats happened in Islamic regions since our first occupation.

I think we all agree that there are many sicko MFs in these Muslim countries. I just think we have varying opinions about how to deal with them. If you want the honey in a bees nest, you don’t shake it up first and then go in to get the honey. We have to start finding better ways of isolating and killing the bad bees, rather than shaking up nests and getting more bees after us. The reason the “west” did so much better than the “east,” was because our systems of government and economics–democracy and capitalism, allowed individual creativity, innovation and wealth creation. Do you get it? The moslem countries all kowtowed to their Koran which sqelched individual liberty, creativity and free will. Thus, their governmental systems were backward (for instance, how are women treated in moslem countries, in general), domineering/dictatorial, tribalist, anti-democratic and didn’t foster the kind of creativity and wealth creation that our system did. Thus, they wallowed while we flourished. Get it? Take a class in world history or political science. Really they were caught behind enemy lines out of uniform gathering information and plotting destruction. Please see reference from the Geneva Convention below. Carol, thanks for the skewed history lesson, but that fact is, have things mixed up. We were out there conquering and colonizing long before democracy became the status quo in the western world. The Roman emperors, NOT selected by the people, they succeeded to the throne based on bloodline while the senators were appointed, again NOT voted in. The monarchies that sprung up later across Europe, again NOT voting republics, but blood based rulers. These were the predecessors to the current Western World as we know it. And they were the ones who went out and largely conquered the world, and they were NOT democratic.
As far as your explanation for fostering creativity, it was in fact the TRIBAL, UNDEMOCRATIC people in Mesopotamia who were some of the most creative people in the world at the time, revolutioning the concept of farming and agriculture as well as science, math (they created the concept of ‘0′), transportation (they invented the wheel). These societies people were the precursors to the people who came later in the same area and became the Islamic people there at a much later date (somewhere around 600ad). So it is fair to say that Islamic zealots had a lot to do with stifling creativity and freedom as they became the rulers, but that happened long after the Romans had established an Empire and after the monarchies in Europe began to conquer the world.
Poolie - I am confused by what you afre saying. On one hand we should go out and save people by killing the evil men who rule them, but on the other we shouldn’t because when we do we pay the price by the people turning on us. You say you joined the marines to do something, but on the other hand you are saying when something is done, we get hurt on the backend by the people we ‘liberate’. So what do you think should be done to solve this problem?

I understand that it may not be the ‘deciding’ factor, but it is still a huge factor nonetheless when devising a strategy that will work. Sure we can level these places, but then perhaps WE are the ones perceived as evil elsewhere in the world, and then more people take up their cause. Then we destroy them and more people pop up to oppose us. This is why your 4-step plan won’t work. We need big ideas, not just big guns when fighting terrorism.
And Carol, I ceded that there is wieght to the fact that RADICAL Islam has stifled innovation and freedom, and this did indeed contribute to the disproportionate wealth of the West vs. the East. But this radicalism is contrary to what the Koran states. There was even what is referred to as a ‘Golden Age’ in the 7th-13th centuries for Islam where some of their greatest inventions occured in medicine, math, science, etc. It was not until around the 13th century (coincidentally when the crusades were in full effect) that they entered the dark ages and the seeds of this anti-western hostility began to take hold.

Look, lets explain with colors
blue = good
red = terrorists
Blue attacks a country and begins a war. Red hates Blue. Red fights Blue for many years, due to its ability to hide in the shadows. During these many years of battle, Blue loses soldiers and Marines. This upsets some pussies back home for various bullshit reasons. Verbal arguments begin within the country of Blue while Red trys to instigate fellow believers within the country of Blue to attack. Luckily these attack fail. Red knows it cannot fight Blue alone. Red also knows that if it can use the turmoil in Blue to its advantage it can have the upper hand. Red can continue to kill Blue while attempting to break Blue down from the inside. Thus creating TWO fronts that must be accounted for.
However if you look at history it is absolutely disasterous to fight from two fronts (just ask Hitler). Hence the reason why Blue should put all of its effort into one front. The only way to accomplish this is for people to stop being cry babies. People die, and giving up makes it all in vain, especially if Red is going to try to kill Blue in anyway it can.
