72 Year-Old Marine Whips Pickpocket’s Ass

June 28th, 2007 Posted By Pat Dollard.

Don’t mess with Marines no matter how old they are!

(AP):A 72-year-old Marine and Golden Glove boxer beat back an attempted robbery by someone a third of his age.

Bill Barnes, 72, of Comstock, Mich., was standing outside of a store scratching off a lottery ticket when he felt someone reach into his pocket. He grabbed the man’s wrist and began to throw a fury of punches at the thief.

Mr. Barnes was very attentive to the pocket because he had just withdrawn money from his account. He had over three hundred dollars in his pocket at the time of the attempted robbery.

Barnes stated that he took matters into his own hands because he would rather take the chance then do deal with his wife after losing the money. He believed that he was more scared of the face that he would face at home then anything that anyone could do to him physically.

Barnes explained that he noticed the man in the store and realized that he was actins suspicious. He wondered why the man kept asking for the prices of different items, and looking at him.

Barnes was a regional runner up in the Golden Gloves competition before joining the Marines in 1956. After retiring from the Marines, he became an ironworker.

The manager of the store could not believe the amount of blood that was lost by the would-be thief. He was also amazed that a man of Barnes’s age could do that much damage to someone.

Jesse Daniel Rae is the 27-year-old man that attempted to rob Barnes. Along with dealing with the injuries that he sustained, he also has to worry about the Michigan court system.

Rae is being brought up on unarmed robbery charges. In Michigan, this is a felony charge that could carry a penalty of up to fifteen years in jail.

There have been many cases in the past of people learning a hard lesson for attacking an elderly person. This reminds me of the case in the 1980s when a man attacked an elderly woman in New York. He turned himself in after two days once he realized that the elderly woman was a close relation to the head of the Gambino Family.

Barnes has been gaining national attention for his efforts against Rae. One of the more popular jokes that is going around Michigan is that Barnes is going to become the new spokesman for Ensure.

Really, kudos to Mr. Barnes and the USMC because this reminds me of another 61 year old Marine (retired) who strangled an attacking 4-6 ft. bobcat with his bare hands in his yard in Florida about a week ago. Something they put in the barracks water back then????

LOL No matter how many wars our men fight in or how tough they are it comes down to this:Don’t mess with a Marine (or any military branch) wife no matter how old she is.
Have to love Mr. Barnes too–makes me proud to be a Michiganer!!

This sort of thing can lead to rather interesting cases of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Just think of the poor 20-something pickpocket that now breaks out in hives every time he passes a retirement home, gets a whiff of Ben-Gay, or hears the nerve-shattering clackety-clack of the shuffleboard discs.

Here’s a link to an article that appeared in today’s National Post about an eighty-seven year old Newfoundland woman who trapped and shot and killed a bear.

HAhahahaha. I love that shit. Semper Fi and fuck the young guy. If he would have killed the little turd, that old fart surely would have eaten him.

  10. Bob USMC

The Local News sites here have the punks mugshot up, that old man handed him his ass but good. I sure hope the moron enjoys his stay at the illustrious Kent County Hilton. http://www.woodtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=6712595

  14. Mike Swann

Some Lib-tard bottom feeder will probably sue the patriot for violating the punk’s civil rights.

  15. Kathy Ozanne

Saw the guy’s mug shot at the link Jeremy provided —-

ouch. that nose looks painful and he’s lucky that’s all that hurts.

I do love it when the good guys win one.

  16. Sandy K.

God bless him. It is always a joy to see a dirtbag get the surprise of a lifetime from their intended prey!

Thanks to everyone and their comments here ~ I can’t stop laughing!

Not only is this completely bad ass but its even better that the clerk stepped in to help. nice change of pace in the world.

  18. Dan

Wait till the rest of the inmates find out who he is. Bet by nightfall he’s somebody’s bitch. What a maggot.

  19. drillanwr

Why is the Corps not taking advantage of this guy? He should be in Iraq barking at a platoon and kicking the living shit out of terrorists!!!

I saw this on another site-these stories always cheer me up. To the Marines on the site-what kind of training do they give you that makes you so tough, even when old? I wish I could laugh at the thief, so this will have to do

    My favorite line:
“Barnes stated that he took matters into his own hands because he would rather take the chance then do deal with his wife after losing the money. He believed that he was more scared of the face that he would face at home then anything that anyone could do to him physically.”

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned….

  22. Chad

OO-RAH! This story rocks my jock.

  23. TJ

welcome to the wonderful world of street justice. In many african countries thieves who are caught by the public get a big ass whooping to the point of death at times. No overcrowding in the prisons for those countries.

  24. Roguewarrior100

Imagine having to tell your friends that Gramps laid down an old-fashioned country ass-whooping on you!!!!

  25. Jeff in Dallas

Mike Swann, I just hope you are incorrect in that statement.

“Some Lib-tard bottom feeder will probably sue the patriot for violating the punk’s civil rights.”

However, seeing as how some scumbag lawyers (John Edwards) are able to sue the shit out of doctors, it wouldn’t surprise me to see one of the bottom feeders trying to make a go of this, and I hope they go down in flames.

I am ecstatic that the old man whipped that punk’s ass!!! Little bastard got what he deserved.

As another former Marine, stories like this always warm my heart

The only thing that could make this better would to be able to read Rummy’s response! I am sure he is having nothing but the time of his life in sunny San Diego! From my past experience, the DIs are going to be using this story to help motivate the recruits, and to also tell them what bags of crap they are compared to REAL Marines!

Those were the days, 16 fun filled weeks in Diego, being told what a turd I was, that I would never be worthy of shining the boots of a Marine. Then the best day of my life other than when my son was born. That day in August 1984 when i was given the DISMISS order for the last time as a recruit, and I was finally a US Marine…

  27. Babs

I am reminded of the astronaut that decked the “you landed on the moon in a studio in Hollywood” guy a few years ago outside a hotel in LA… Just flattened him!
On another note, it also reminds me of what I thought about the passengers that fought back on 9-11. “You never know who you are dealing with”…
My son is 5′ 9″, he is slim. He has also taken 2 years of USMC hand to hand combat training. I pity the poor shlub that thinks he is an easy mark. When he was on the wrestling team in high school every evening when he got home the dogs would hide under the furniture!

  28. Babs

You know Brad, you prove my point. Once a Marine, always a Marine. I think one of the biggest advantages we have going domestically are the Brad’s in our citizenry… I have NO DOUBT that you would have given this pick pocket or anyone else that chooses to disturb our social order your best…
I thank God for all the retired vets out there, cruising around, just living their lives… until they are called on.
I feel the same way about my son. A more polite individual would be hard to find (he doesn’t even inturupt people during conversations). But… watch out if the shit hits the fan.

PLANTATION — One gunman is dead and another is in critical condition after they tried to rob a sandwich store and were shot by an armed customer Wednesday night, authorities said.

    ——————————————-

A man who said he was a friend of Lovell’s described him as a “quiet Clint Eastwood-type you don’t want to mess with.”

“They just happened to pick on the wrong guy at the wrong time,” said Wesley White of Yulee in north Florida. White said he’s known Lovell for 19 years.

Lovell is a former Marine who was a member of the helicopter detail that transported Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, White said. He also was a former Pan Am and Delta airline pilot who worked out regularly and was in good condition, White said.

“He’s also one heck of a shot,” White, 50, said.

From one Marine to another: Mr. Barnes, I salute you! Having been in the Corps and having then been a gym manager and trainer for many years, I have run across several old boys from the same mold as Bill Barnes. One rode on horseback through the mountains of Afghanistan with the Muhjahedin, beating back the Russian army, at the age of 66. My friend Ed, though 82 and only 140 lbs. beat the tar out of a bigger younger man that had verbally abused his disabled wife. The 33 yr. old scumbag declined to press charges, claiming his facial bruises, lacerations and broken ribs were from falling over an exercise bike, so we promptly charged him for extensive repairs to a bike. The off-duty cop that witnessed the entire incident immediately confirmed the guys story of falling. Ed was Army Airborne and a veteran of 3 wars. Hoo-ahh! Another time my tough-as-nails 70 year old pal John S. was accosted in the gym by two burly young punks jacked up on steroids. A frantic lady informed me that that a fight was brewing but when I got there the two muscleheads were out cold and John calmly continued his workout. When I asked him what happened he flashed a brief grin and said softly, “Looks like they’re tired”. We kicked them out for sleeping in the gym. Another acquaintence in his late sixties, owns and works in a liquor store in a bad nieghborhood. To date he has been the subject of three VERY UNsuccesful armed robbery attempts. The .357 magnum he always carries has 3 notches in the grip, and the cop who covers that beat told me that they were all head shots. He also told me he has apprehended several shoplifters and held them until police arrived. Old boy keeps a calm, cool head, and he can SHOOT. The moral here: Never, NEVER, underestimate anyone, especially based on something stupid like age or size. ‘Nuff said.
