White House Calls Emergency Meeting Regarding New Al Qaeda Threat
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The White House has called an urgent multi-agency meeting for Thursday to discuss a potential new al Qaeda threat on U.S. soil, ABC News reported on Tuesday.
Top intelligence and law enforcement officials have been told to meet in the White House Situation Room to report on steps to minimize or counter the threat and what steps are being taken to tighten security at government buildings, ABC said.
The meeting would be one of a number that have been convened in light of new intelligence and information learned from the recent failed car bomb attempts in London, ABC reported, citing a senior U.S. administration official.
The unnamed official told ABC the level of concern of a new attack in the United States was now higher than it had been in some time.
The White House had no immediate comment on the report.
Law enforcement officials said the botched bombings in London provided clues about possible tactics, ABC reported.
Two car bombs were found in London and a fuel-packed jeep was rammed into Glasgow Airport in Scotland two weeks ago. British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said both plots were associated with al Qaeda.
ABC News cited senior U.S. intelligence officials as saying that new information suggests a small al Qaeda cell was on its way to the United States or may already be in the country.
Separately, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told the Chicago Tribune’s editorial board his “gut feeling” is that the United States faces an increased risk of attack this summer.
Chertoff said his assessment was based on past patterns of terrorists in Europe, intelligence he did not disclose and recent al Qaeda statements, the Tribune reported.
“Summertime seems to be appealing to them. … We worry that they are rebuilding their activities,” Chertoff told the newspaper.
Al Qaeda’s No. 2, Ayman al-Zawahiri, has spoken out regularly in audio-taped messages in recent months. In the latest recording, posted on the Internet on Tuesday, the Egyptian cleric threatened more attacks on Britain.
Oh here we go again with the ABC unnamed official MSM crappolla. Now, who in the fuck believes that ABC news has any fucking cred anymore?
July 10th, 2007 at 5:29 pmThis is timed nicely with a new push by the d’rats to give up on the Iraq war that they voted for. A domestic hit would give great assistance to the d’rats gaining the white house in 08.
Someone tell me why did nancy pelosi really go to syria? coordination?

July 10th, 2007 at 6:17 pmSteve,
Nancy Pelosi goes to Syria and Saudi Arabia. Pelosi leaves Syria and Syria proceeds to threaten Israel will full scale war on the Golan Heights and reportedly, Syria has crossed the Lebanon border and is digging in for an assault on that country.
And after Pelosi left Saudi Arabia, Saudi Arabia’s plans for a Mid East peace accord fell flat on its face.
0 for 2 Nancy. And not only 0 for 2, but you single-handedly made the situation worse in both countries. Now, you know why the White House told you not to go? Now, you know why some of us called for your arrest for making that trip?
Some of us won’t stop until, Mrs. Pelosi, you are leaning your saggy rack out a window responding to complaints that you didn’t include the napkins with the Big Mac and fries.
July 10th, 2007 at 6:28 pmSteve I agree with you. The DemonRats will stop at nothing to fufill thier self proclaimed prophecy. I wish we would just shot each and everyone of these bastards.
Iwould not put anything past these bastards anymore.
It is getting hard to explain to these troops why Congress is acting the way they do.
July 10th, 2007 at 7:06 pmMaybe we can catch these extremist at Islamic prayer sessions in the public schools in San Diego. Apparently the only ones that have rights in our system anymore are the extremist (Islamic that is).
July 10th, 2007 at 7:12 pmI am not suprised that we are in this position - nor should you be. We are percived as a paper tiger that has no staying power and is handcuffed by the fallacies of political correctness. This has emboldened our enemies, both foreign and domestic. In the Arab culture, the weak are culled and slaughtered as a sign of power. After all, is not the true nature of war to demoralize and destroy your enemy using any means possible? They are not constrained by the ROE, Geneva Conventions and public perceptions as we are. AQ, the Quds and others fully understand that the American population, in general, is weak and uninterested in anything past their TV set. Therefore, utilizing the ingnorance of the MSM these groups provide a daily barrage of body parts, severed heads and explosions. All widely diseminated in order to break the resolve of the American public. They have done a damn good job. Yet, we do nothing of any real consequence to turn the tables on them as that is not politically correct. They will hit CONUS again and when they do it will make 9/11 look like a picnic. However, it may not be in the form that you think. I am a firm believer that the next great attack will be one of an economic nature that will drop the American population to its knees very quickly. At that point, since you will be on your knees remember to face east.
July 11th, 2007 at 12:22 amAnybody remember about a year, year and a half ago OBL told muslims in New York and DC to leave the cities?
July 11th, 2007 at 1:03 amI agree with the Baghdad Aviator. The next blow to America will be financial. NYSE, Saudi oil fields, and telecommunications facilities. The disruption of any of these would put a major dent in the American economy. Merely killing American citizens would not stop us from prospering and would sway public opinion back to Sept 12, 2001. Everyone would be flying a U.S. Flag again and chanting, ”down with islam”.
I would like to think that what goes on behind closed doors is in the interest of America and should not be made public for OPSEC reasons.
If (more like when) another attack occurs on US soil, it will be blamed on the Bush Administration. Either for taking too strong of a stance after 9/11 or for not taking a strong enough stance. MSM will spin it in the leftists favor.
July 11th, 2007 at 1:30 amwhen there is an attack this suummer on our homeland, which i think is a matter of time, they will immediately appoint a blue ribbon panel comission of dumacrats and rhinos. how didn’t we connect the dots?ahhhhh? how did they get in the country? ahhhhhhhhh? why do they hate us? who cares! after months of investigating and million of our dollars spent on this farce, they’ll come out with a big fat book of garbage! when we’re hit , bush, dumacrats, and the rhinos, will have blood on their hand! they can point their fingers all they want but we’ll see the blood dripping from their fingers as they point! YOU CANNOT FIGHT A WAR ON TERROR HALF ASS! YOU CANNOT LOCK THE FRONT DOOR AND LEAVE THE BACK DOOR WIDE OPEN AND EXPECT TO BE SAFE! WHEN WILL THIS LAZY ASS COUNTRY WAKE UP! HOW MANY ATTACKS IS IT GOING TAKE!
July 11th, 2007 at 2:40 amThe MSM is really pissing me off. They’ll blame anyone but never themselves. I bet the Democrats will blame any future attacks on President Bush as well, even though he and his military commanders have given many warnings about future attacks, especially if the troops pull out.
July 11th, 2007 at 2:45 amI do hope that history will be fair to President Bush and that it will remember the troops as the heroes/fighters they are and not as the IED victims CNN/etc. portray them to be. WHEN they succeed (I’m still optimistic!), the world will be a lot safer and future generations from the West to the Middle-East will have the President and his brave men and women to thank.
I think that they still only want to kill as many of us as possible..when we retaliate against them, then their hope will be more moderate muslims will rise against us..then our oil will be hard to get and expensive..they know they have us over a barrel..the cost of doing business will skyrocket..the cost of goods will skyrocket..total chaos in America..No one buying, selling,trading..and then open season on muslims
July 11th, 2007 at 3:44 amTo expand on what I wrote earlier. In islam one islamist should not harm another islamist. Hence the warning to muslims in NYC and DC. I haven’t heard of large muslim populations leaving. Living here in Philadelphia, I think I’d have heard something. But, then there’s the other ‘quality’ of islam that no other religion has, to lie. Was that warning of OBL’s an effort to divert our attention from their intended target? Of, course, I have this obsession with the Great Lakes region. Where’s President Jefferson when you need him.
July 11th, 2007 at 4:42 amI’ve said it before and I’m going to say it again–go after the bastards full tilt. Open up on them wherever they are with all the firepower we have. I can’t believe we don’t know where they are right now. Drop a load on them againa and again–whatever it takes.
July 11th, 2007 at 4:48 amThen go to Iran and drop a load on those shitheads–it’s just a matter of time. Why do we wait for them to make the first move–war ain’t a card game.
You either get serious or you get fucked.
“You either get serious or you get fucked.”
Based on what I have heard recently from our “elected representatives” I suggest you bend over. We are all gonna take it jailhouse style…
July 11th, 2007 at 5:44 amBagdad and Babs: you are correct. We are a paper tiger. As much as the minority represented on this website want to fight it, we are. The Bush Admin is populated with really stupid people who do dumb things. The first stupid thing was to invade Iraq thinking they would jump up and say “THANK YOU FOR DEMOCRACY NOW WE WILL LIVE IN PEACE.” Any person over the age of 10 knows that is unrealistic. It’s no wonder our Iraq “strategy” was screwed up for the first 4 years of the Iraq War (except for the successful initial invasion)–look at the incompetent boobs they had making decisions. Now, they are using the strategy they should have have in the first place–take the fight to the enemy. But maybe it’s a day late, and a dollar short (notice the news reports that it’s costing $10 billion a month to sustain this Iraq adventure). Look at the AG fiasco, the dimwits the AG has as his “top aides.” Look at the Congressional “leaders” DeLay, Frische, Haskew, et al. who sold out GOP core values, and Bush didn’t veto. They lost the Congress in 2006. Now, the Surgeon General (whose word I trust more than Bush admin types) says he was told what to say, what science to suppress. THIS is what is going to get HRC elected in ‘08. It’s hard to fight the MSM and Hollywood bias (think of Hollywood as a propaganda machine) when you are handicapped with having very little viable/credible GOP leaders. I am tired of making excuses and being patient with stupid people. All the dems have to do is convince the US electorate they are smarter (not hard to do) and have fresh ideas, and guess what–cake walk.
July 11th, 2007 at 9:12 amP.S.: Baghdad, didn’t realize you were actually in the fight. Thank you for all you are doing. I support what you are doing 100%–I am just angry at the missteps and slow response of those at the top. I think decisions were made re: strategy on a domestic political basis, instead of what was right to win the war. Keep kicking, taking names, and stay safe.
July 11th, 2007 at 11:59 amLamplighter. I should have waited until now before I made my comment in another article. I’m well over ten and thought/hoped the early policy would work. It looked promising the first day when they were beating saddam’s torn down statue with their shoes. Sin loi.
