Classified Report: Al Qaeda At 911 Strength
Gee, could this have something to do with our failure to conduct sufficient military operations in Pakistan for fear of pissing off the locals?
WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. intelligence analysts have concluded al-Qaida has rebuilt its operating capability to a level not seen since just before the 2001 terrorist attacks, The Associated Press has learned.
The conclusion suggests that the group that launched the most devastating terror attack on the United States has been able to rebuild despite nearly six years of bombings, war and other tactics aimed at crippling it.
Still, numerous government officials say they know of no specific, credible threat of a new attack.
A counterterrorism official familiar with a five-page summary of the new government threat assessment called it a stark appraisal that will be discussed at the White House on Thursday as part of a broader meeting on an upcoming National Intelligence Estimate.
The official and others spoke on condition of anonymity because the secret report remains classified.
Counterterrorism analysts produced the document, titled “Al-Qaida better positioned to strike the West.” The document pays special heed to the terror group’s safe haven in Pakistan and makes a range of observations about the threat posed to the United States and its allies, officials said.
Al-Qaida is “considerably operationally stronger than a year ago” and has “regrouped to an extent not seen since 2001,” the official said, paraphrasing the report’s conclusions. “They are showing greater and greater ability to plan attacks in Europe and the United States.”
The group also has created “the most robust training program since with an interest in using European operatives,” the official quoted the report as saying.
At the same time, this official said, the report speaks of “significant gaps in intelligence” so U.S. authorities may be ignorant of potential or planned attacks.
John Kringen, who heads the CIA’s analysis directorate, echoed the concerns about al-Qaida’s resurgence during testimony and conversations with reporters at a House Armed Services Committee hearing on Wednesday.
“They seem to be fairly well settled into the safe haven and the ungoverned spaces of Pakistan,” Kringen testified. “We see more training. We see more money. We see more communications. We see that activity rising.”
The threat assessment comes as the National Intelligence Council is preparing a National Intelligence Estimate focusing on threats to the United States. A senior intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity while the high-level analysis was being finalized, said the document has been in the works for roughly two years.
Kringen and aides to National Intelligence Director Mike McConnell would not comment on the details of that analysis. “Preparation of the estimate is not a response to any specific threat,” McConnell’s spokesman Ross Feinstein said, adding that it would be ready for distribution this summer.
The sick reality is that the damm left (who don’t believe that we are at war will blame Bush), blame Cheney, etc. for this report.
When will they get it? Like I said before, they were on the sides of the communists and the Daniel Ortega types in the 80’s and know this (same) bunch would rather tattoo the P/VP vs FINISHING this war.
Hey, when will the jihadikiller website be finished? I get so many raised eyebrows, and compiments of those that “get it” on the t-shirt.
July 11th, 2007 at 3:00 pmAQ are like ants. You’ll never get rid of them until you kill their queen. Perhaps now that Musharaf has been thretened by AQ, he’ll wake up and smell the Chai and go back to the Western Provinces and deal with the threat. Or make a secret deal with us(I believe we had a report posted here on one that has already been made…??) and let us go after AQ and their fellow demoniacs.
Lets see if Mr Musharaf has an “unscheduled” meeting with GW in the comming days?
July 11th, 2007 at 3:04 pmWhat would Jim Webb do about it (the reconstitution of AQ) now that he has gone over to the Dark Side? Perhaps he would give DOD and Homeland Security 6 months at home with their families.
July 11th, 2007 at 3:07 pmI just wanna say that that’s a cool photo.
July 11th, 2007 at 3:23 pmThe remote regions…… few civilians….. strengthened AQ…… no better time erase these areas…. permanently
July 11th, 2007 at 3:39 pmOdd…
Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t the Paki’s just slug it out at the Red Mosque?
They still don’t smell what Al-Qaeda’s cookin…
OK everyone, what are the current odds…
that this year, the rest of 07 the Paki’s will unleash an massive attack on Al-Qaeda? I say 1 in 10.
allow large formations of American units to attack AQ in Paki? 0 in 10.
We’re on a roll.
Let’s just…
DO IT, JUST ROLL IN AND KILL THEM ALL AQ, WE KNOW WHERE THEY ARE!
Anyway, here’s a link to a ga-zillion more email addresses to tell congressmen to…

July 11th, 2007 at 4:03 pmas you can see, I had problems posting. I apologize to all.
to the moderator, you can cut out the first two postings.
Thank you all for the opportunity in letting me embarrass myself!
July 11th, 2007 at 4:04 pmOK, so all these Al Q killed in Iraq only made them stronger? How about we take a big cannon and shoot ourselves in the foot? Notice that we had a stupid strategy in Iraq (not wanting to tick off the locals), and look where it got us, until we changed to the latest counterinsurgency strategy. Oh, and by the way, the left knows we are at war–they just don’t want to be. They want a type of foreign policy where we just pretend the problem isn’t out there, and then when we get hit, we try to “arrest” the villians and give them a fair trial in court. Remember the African embassy bombings? USS Cole? Taliban setting up shop in Afghanistan? WTC 1993? 9/11? Just ignore the problem, and send the FBI to “investigate” and “arrest” the criminals. That was pretty much our policy until 9/11 (even under the Bush admin, EXCEPT for Bush, Sr., who did take a better approach in Kuwait.
July 11th, 2007 at 4:10 pm“That’s what you get when you go to war against Iraq, who had nothing to do with 9/11, if we had gone not given up on the Afghanistan war and had continued the fight against AQ there they would not have been able to rebuild to this strength.
But we went after Saddam based on a bunch lies to finish daddy Bush’s war.”
Just wanted to let you know what we will here from the d’rats tomorrow.
If we do get a hit it will be interesting to see how the d’rats will blame the U.S. first instead of a sworn enemy.
July 11th, 2007 at 4:27 pm“The official and others spoke on “condition of anonymity” because the secret report remains classified.”
July 11th, 2007 at 4:48 pmIn other words someone said something and someone called the AP from Somalia and the AP printed it.The AP are the most trusted liars on this planet.
You know with behavior like this it’s no wonder Nixon turned out to be paranoid - I’d make a team of plumbers and stop the leaks at all cost! I MEAN THE SHIZ IS CLASSIFIED! WTF! Bush needs to get someone in the CIA to clean house - I’ve read too many Tom Clancy novels to put up with this shit in real life!
July 11th, 2007 at 4:58 pmLast few words from the AP report (via Fox News):
Armed Services Committee members expressed frustration that more was not being done to get bin Laden and tamp down activity in the tribal areas. The senior intelligence analysts tried to portray the difficulty of operating in the area, despite a $25 million bounty on the head of bin Laden and his top deputy.
“They are in an environment that is more hostile to us than it is to Al Qaeda,” Fingar said.
Note the last sentence. Bin Laden is in an area that is more hostile to us than it is to Al Qaeda.
FUCKING DUH!!!
Am I nuts to even bother reading the news any more?! It’s like we’re being talked down to like we’re a pack of drooling retards who can’t conceptualize how the world’s most hunted man is holed up in an area that is sympathetic to his ideals.
Or is it perhaps because most Americans are so mentally challenged that they NEED to be lectured like this?
Either way, when we’re done with the enemy abroad, I think we need to shoot the shit out of our media. Cull the herd, so to speak.
July 11th, 2007 at 5:09 pmJust break out the Nukes for cryin out loud!!
July 11th, 2007 at 5:49 pm>>Just break out the Nukes for cryin out loud!!
July 11th, 2007 at 6:47 pmThis is an incredible pic. I’m with the lot here… pull a Harry Truman and break out the good chit!
July 11th, 2007 at 7:05 pmDan,
That’s an exellent analogy (i was tempted to type “antalogy”, haha)…but it is very true. I’ll give you another example. Many years ago, my new wife and I were struggling to make ends meet and were in an apartment building that we soon found was infested with cockroaches. Many of the residents complained so the mgmt had the entire apartment building sprayed. All was well for a week and then the little bastids were back, same as before!
They repeated this 2 more times with the same end result so we moved.
Six months later I talked with a friend still there at the complex and he told me what had happened. During all of those sprayings, one family on the 3rd floor had adamantly REFUSED to allow the spraying in their apartment. So, in essence, every single cockroach in that building had assembled in their apartment until the spraying wore off in a week.
Pakistan has been the 3rd floor apartment of the world.
July 11th, 2007 at 7:36 pmFight4TheRight said >> one family on the 3rd floor had adamantly REFUSED to allow the spraying in their apartment.
They either had itty bitty babies or they had drugs that they didn’t want the bug people to find.
July 11th, 2007 at 9:57 pmThis is not a funny topic, and has “bugged” me for a long time, but y’all have made the afterread much more hopeful. Am SURE the powers that be are letting the critters pack up to migrate to centers in different hotspots and THEN we’ll crispy em. MSM is just keeping AQ and buds soft by thinking we are…..heh heh.
Sent PBS a feedback about why my beloved Lehrer is no longer so loved, nor trusted, and the reason folks have left MSM paper and TV for the internet is TRUTH…real news…if biased, say so….one more mooslim from safe life in the west with kids in western schools, west educated …speaking “for” what’s going on in their country of origin….*gag* I just cannot handle. Even academic hubby (hard science) is swinging to Clean It Up Now, let them do their work…go USA, go!

Excellent thoughts. Great minds….
July 12th, 2007 at 6:14 amBD, thanks for the link, and Pat, excellent post.
I see some people wanting to have their cake and to eat it to. Either al-Qaeda is the threat Bush says they are, in Iraq as well as other parts of the world where we HAVE TO WIN, or as the left says, they aren’t that big of a threat.
But they keep claiming Bush is NOT doing enough to fight what they call “the real enemy” of al-Qaeda, and yet they continue to try to get Bush to surrender Iraq to al-Qaeda.
It amazes me how they continue to talk out of both sides of their mouth and yet no one from their side of the aisle calls them out on it.
