Hadley’s language clearly suggests the participation of U.S. forces. The unpublicized participation of U.S. forces.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is fully backing a projected Pakistani military crackdown in an area important for al Qaeda and Taliban militants, President George W. Bush’s national security adviser said on Sunday.

Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf’s 10-month peace deal with tribal fighters in northwestern Pakistan has not helped marginalize their foreign allies, said Stephen Hadley.

“It has not worked the way he wanted. It has not worked the way we wanted it,” Hadley said on the ABC program “This Week.”

Musharraf was moving more troops into the North Waziristan region on the Afghan border, Hadley said in a round of television interviews.

“We are supporting that effort in order to get control of the situation,” he told ABC. “We have provided all appropriate support that we can consistent with Pakistani sovereignty,” he added on CNN’s “Late Edition.”

Hadley, Bush’s chief adviser on national security, said Taliban safe havens in Pakistan were a threat to both Musharraf’s government and the United States.

“There is pooling of Taliban there. There is training, and there are operations,” Hadley said on Fox News. Musharraf “has taken actions against them but the action has at this point not been adequate, not effective.”

“We are urging him to do more and we are providing our full support to what he’s contemplating.”

Pro-Taliban militants in the area on Sunday called off the peace deal signed in September after accusing Pakistani authorities of violating the pact.

Under the pact, Pakistan agreed to stop military operations against the militants in return for their pledge that they would not send fighters across the border into Afghanistan and would not launch attacks on Pakistan’s army.

A militant leadership council said it was dropping the deal because Pakistani forces had launched several attacks on them and the government had deployed more troops in the region.

You mean the taliban lied, gee, I didn’t see that coming.

    Any Deerhunters here?

I’ve been thinking about the latest events in Pakistan and have come up with ”the deer hunter” theory. Here goes…

You have a very large landmass and you want to kill deer.(AQ that is) Instead of walking all over 1000 acres, looking for deer, you create a nice safe haven for them. Plant some clover, install some corn feeders, and drop a few salt licks to attract a deer.

So this deer comes into the new paradise you have built for him. He’s sitting around getting all fat and not feeling threatened. Eventually, he calls more deer into the area. They all sit around in their newfound secure environment.

What the deer don’t know is that you have set up observation areas to see how the deer are doing. You are watching their eating, drinking, sleeping, travelling, and social habits from afar.

Then it happens, one day you see he elusive granddaddy of the bucks. The MMFIC of bucks. Hunting season is only a few weeks away. So you continue to scope the herd. You develop a plan, where you will enter the area, what weapon is best suited for the terrain, what gear you will need to get there. The whole time, the deer don’t suspect a thing.

1st day of hunting season, you wake up early, hook up with your hunting buddies, sneak into the woods, and commence to shooting.

3 weeks later, you and your buddies are sitting on your backdeck drinking budweiser and talking about the great hunting season while you’re waiting for venison steaks to finish grilling.

Sit back and see boys and girls…I think this was all part of the 3rd quarter playbook.

Yeah buddy! Buerg, I’m a deer hunter and thats how you do it right there. Bait those sumbitches like they do on those Texas ranches. except instead of whitetails they will be shooting towel heads. Thats a great plan and lets be honest here, deer are way smarter than these dipshits and it works with them. deer can even smell a human from like 4 miles away

  5. LadyAngler

Buerg~ Interesting analogy. Baiting with feeders, however, is illegal in my state… but deer cocaine is legal… go figure.

I can’t be certain such foresight was applied here… if so, I have way underestimated someone, and for that I would apologize. Perhaps, it is the sceptic in me having trouble believing any operation of such magnitude could be leak proof. I dunno. It will intersting to see how this cookie crumbles.

    Taliban? Tayiya? No. Can’t be?

  7. MarineDoc

I think yhour right Beurg! Of course the general public has that annoying short term gratification itch musch like the Dems. They are to stupid to realize that you have to employ strategy and allow an effective plan to develop.
I think the term shooting fish in a barrel maybe about to come!

  8. PhilNBlanx

    Nice analogy Buerg.
But let me propose a different although more realistic ending.
The 1st day of hunting season begins, you wake up early, hook up with your hunting buddies, sneak into the woods, and realize only a few of the deer have remained.
Seems the serpent has long ago alerted the deer to your plans and all the big bucks have fled to safer grazing grounds.
So it goes in the Forest of Political Correctness where the deer are handfed by democrat/demedia defeatists (serpent) and jihad lives happily ever after.
It’s past time Americans get bored with the above worn out ending.
Maybe it’s time to initiate open season on the serpent.

  9. Jarhead68

I hope you are so right on, Beurg. However, I can’t envision this type of long-term stategy working because some traitor in the CIA or Pentagon would have leaked this to the NY Slimes or the Washington Compost, who would have dutifully reported in on the front page so the ragheads would know ahead of time. As I say, I hope you are right and OBL and his buddy Ayman the Smellible are finally smoked.

    Semper Fi.

What doesn’t get killed by Pakistan will flee to the ’stan, I wonder if NATO has a welcoming party for them?

Thought the treaty was crazy, but it may well be the play, notice how we recently released info that al queeeeda was back in full strength in that area.

Hope we have some moab’s sitting around.

  11. Kevin M

All of the above seems very enticing. I, however, won’t pop the champagne until I hear that the entire province of Waziristan is being carpet bombed completely out of existence. And I’m not holding my breath for that. If we can see the tactical benefit of having all the enemy in one nice little area for a turkey shoot, then so can they.

I hope I’m wrong, but you might want to prepare yourself for yet another “OBL and Co. quietly slip away before massive military action.”

One thing I am certain of: If US and Paki troops try to make a battle out of this, the ringleaders will all get away. Escape has always been #1 on their contingency list. What we need is a massive bombing campaign that will literally exterminate all life in the region. And that will be something that no politicial will want to answer for.

It would make for interesting headlines. Waziristan no longer exists (AQ and Taliban reduced to near-zero). Musharraf then enacts a vicious purge on extremists throughout Pakistan, taking no prisoners.

Iran would then clearly get a serious case of the shits.

  12. MarineDoc

Question on these continued leaks to the press by CIA, FBI, etc, etc. Why haven’t there been trials for treason or at least investigations on these leaks to the media that are obviously detrimental to the efforts to secure our National Security?

Would not these actions be equivocable to the old Cold War spies? This has been happening rather frequently. I even recall having a mission scrapped back in 2004 due to a Newsweek article that pretty much gave up info on a what was supposed to be a covert operation.

(Sitting here scratching my head in thought).

Check DEBKA. Some interesting reading at the top of the page.

I know the truth though, Osama’s drivin’ a cab in DC.

Buerg: You are giving to much credit to Pakistan and the US. They are not that smart, it is to simple. But a great idea.

  15. For country and glory

steve- i think GBU-43 has something he wants to say to you.

funny thing is that anyone who has a fucking clue about terrorism knows that wajiristan is the wild west of terrorism. pervez does not have the military resources to exterminate the terrorists in wajiristan, he need us.

the global war on terrorism is pretty simple:

1 squeeze the taliban from afghan in the west and pakistan in the east

2 squeeze syria and iran from iraq in the west and pakistan in the east

and for fucks sake stop letting them exfiltrate from battles, fucking encircle and destroy.

Yeah, whatever happened to the MOABs? I’d also wouldn’t mind if we dumped ignited diesel or some other flammable liquid down those caves and flush the survivors out like we did in the Pacific during WWII. I sincerely hope that the Pakistani military stays loyal to Musharraf.

TIME FOR A LARGE PARKING LOT in Pak, Afgan, IRAN and parts of Iraq, hell, include Syria.

After seeing Jimbo Webb on TV today, I am going to puke!

  19. Dan

I wrote this letter to Jimbo Webb.

“I read about your little tantrum on Meet The Press today.
Why don’t you take your own advice and stop putting political words in our troops’ mouths. Frankly, you don’t speak for most of the troops anyways. So why don’t you 86 that shuck and jive routine of yours and start acting like a Marine for a change.”

    Pat -

I can no longer stomach the Sunday a.m. leftist-clap shows. But I saw this on Drudge and thought you’d like to see it if you missed it.

I don’t care if Webb is a vet. As we’ve seen with Murtha and Kerry, vets are human too and are subject to being complete and total tools and ass holes. From all I’ve seen and heard of Webb since he ran for the seat he now holds, the man has some pent-up anger issues, among others. (Wasn’t it one of his staffers who took the fall for him several months back for the gun (Webb’s gun)in the brown paper bag while in the building??) And then there was Webb’s less than classy exchange with the President when W inquired after Webb’s son serving in Iraq. Hell, even Kennedy uses manners when in a social, and I assume official, setting with the President he strongly disagrees with.

Anyhow, here’s this a.m.’s exchange between Webb and Lindsey Graham on NBC’s Meet The Press:

THere is an article on Debka now that the trial is hot for Zahahiri & Bin Laden!

  25. TJ

When democrat vets become politicians, they become weenies and forget what it means to “complete the mission”

  26. Michael

Whats happened to Jim Webb? He was a guy that always railed against the Left whenever they tried to help us lose a war or change military policy, etc. He has, on purpose or by accident, joined forces with the very people he despised and fought against. I’ve read some of his articles on Vietnam and read in an interview saying that he’s one of the few guys that can still justify the reasons for going into Vietnam! He’s come a long way since his days as a grunt kickin charlies ass.

  27. Dan

Jim Webb has always been a lose cannon on deck. He has a very narrow view of the world that revolves around himself. He has no values, and no political acumen.
He makes enemies wherever he goes. He pisses people off and gets fired….which has been the story of his life.
He escaped a court-martial because he was sucking John Warner’s dick.

He alienated members of the Rep party and will no doubt be a complete failure as a Dem.

This guy is one of those elitist failure types that will either find “God” at some point in their miserable existence or we’ll hear about how he lost his will to live and blew his own fucking brains out.
