Dozens of Iraqi Shia villagers have been massacred by Sunni extremists wearing Iraqi army uniforms, officials have said.
In the northern Diyala province, police Col. Ragheb Radhi al-Omairi said 29 members of a Shia tribe were massacred overnight when dozens of suspected Sunni gunmen raided their village near Muqdadiyah, about 90 kilometers (60 miles) northeast of Baghdad.
The dead included four women, al-Omairi said.
An Iraqi army officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attack occurred in the village of Diwailiya and that at least 10 bodies were mutilated in the hour-long raid.
He blamed al-Qaeda militants who have been fighting US and Iraqi forces in the province, which includes the flashpoint city of Baqouba.
Thousands of troops swept into Baquba to drive out an estimated several hundred al-Qaeda militants who had turned the city into a stronghold.
But US commanders assert that many of the most senior al-Qaeda fighters departed before their net closed.
Yeah … Those folks will be just “fine” … if only we would just leave Iraq …
July 17th, 2007 at 7:48 amwhen the headline says sunnis kill shias, their is no distinction made between iraqi sunnis(which suggest a civil war) and insurgents who are generally sunni/wahabbiast. intentional by the MSM
July 17th, 2007 at 2:04 pmThis is so tragic!! Now imagine if the troops pulled out of Iraq…
July 17th, 2007 at 3:33 pmAl-Q is a vicious force and should be annihilated.
How do they keep finding out? Most probably true is that these Iranian cell leaders setup ops very quickly then leave quickly with the thugs in charge. The opportunity to catch these leaders is probably very small.
You have to get them just when they are setting up not when they are already operating in an area. A few picked men should be pulled of the lines and sent to a region outside Iraq. Once a new group has shown signs of setting up shop in a another town then launch the hit team not to the town but to the retreating lines in it’s wake. Then direct a standard attack from forces inside Iraq. When the Cells are tipped off by the locals they then flee into the other trap.
I know it’s probably impracticable because of resource availability but it’s just a thouht
