This is a classic Al Qaeda move. One, do something spectacular, especially tied to an already publicized event, and two, be as brutal and horrifying as possible, in order to both terrorized and break the spirit of the enemy. Imagine life under an Al Qaeda-style fundametalist regime.

UPDATE:BAGHDAD (AP) - The Iraqi Interior Ministry has raised the casualty toll in two bombings of soccer fans in Baghdad to at least 50 dead, 136 wounded.

Two bomb attacks have killed at least 27 people in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, as crowds celebrated a famous victory by the national football team.
The first hit the city’s Mansour district, where fans were marking a win against South Korea in the Asian Cup semi-finals, killing at least 11.

The second explosion killed 16 people at an army checkpoint in east Baghdad.

Thousands had gathered on the streets of Baghdad, dancing and chanting in a rare moment of national unity.

“I was in a car with my friends, people all around were celebrating and then there was a huge explosion and a lot of fire,” one eyewitness of the first bomb attack in Mansour, who asked not to be named, told the Agence France-Presse news agency.

Police said that at least 60 people had been injured in the attack, when the car exploded in the excited crowd.

Death and joy

A suspected suicide car bomber then blew himself up about 45 minutes later in the midst of dozens of cars filled with supporters, near an Iraqi army checkpoint in the eastern district of Ghadeer.

At least 16 people were killed, including two soldiers, and nearly 60 were injured, local officials said.

Separately, at least one person was reported to have died after being hit by stray bullets fired in celebration of the football victory, an Arab tradition popular in a city awash with guns.

Celebrations marking the national team’s football victory also took place in other major cities in Iraq.

“I am nearly crying for joy,” 30-year-old fan Nuri al-Najjar told Reuters in the southern city of Basra.

“Iraq’s victory with this harmonious team represents the way we should all live together.”

Aq & Co will fuck up a wet dream won’t they? This ought to galvanize all Iraqis against these people. I hope it does.

    From my blog:

We can train the Iraqis, we can equip the Iraqis, we can stand WITH the Iraqis if they are willing to stand and fight for their freedom from Islamic tyranny, but we can’t GIVE them that freedom, the average, every day Iraqi on the street has got to stand and demand that freedom and be willing to fight and maybe die in earning that freedom for his homeland and family, the Iraqis have got to call in any threat they see, anything out of the ordinary that they see, in so many cases I am convinced that there are many Iraqis that are supporting this insurgency, at least covertly, and maybe not intentionally, but by their silence they are more than covertly supporting it…

Bombs kill 27 soccer fans in Iraq

If this doesn’t as you say, ‘galvanize’ the Iraqis to act as ONE and stand against al-Qaida, nothing ever will and it’s time to get the fuck OUT of the A.O. and let em sink or swim…

The term terrorist…look it up! And Pakistan wants to cut deals with these people. If the U.S has the determination to stick it out in Iraq, the Terrorist will defeat themselves!!! From a mother of a Marine currently deployed in Ramadi, my opinion is…if we pull out now, we will be back in 2-3yrs. starting all over again. (My opinion only)

“Iraq’s victory with this harmonious team represents the way we should all live together.”

That says it all, AQ fucked up big time. This is going to galvanize the Iraqis big time. This is the equivalent of bombing Manchester United fans in the UK, and like United fans, I don’t think the Iraqis are gonna stand for this.

It will be interesting to see what happens next.

    Bend it like Bin Laden!

I hope and pray that this cowardly twisted act that AQ aimed at one of the few joys in Iraqi life right now (that all could celebrate) will further unite the Iraqi people. Any wavering in silence or support of AQ on the Iraqi citizenry now will seal much of their fate. The time for them to secure their full freedom is NOW. Too many have died. Too many have fought and given all they have. They must not allow AQ to dominate their society again. To me this shows how desperate AQ has gotten in the hope to frighten the people into submission. May God give the Iraqi people all the courage and strength to resist and fight ridding their country of all AQ. AQ is pure evil. Our soldiers all stand with them, our allied forces, the Iraqi Army and Police. If all the people throw their full weight behind them they will succeed. I am confident of that. If they do not . . . we all know what will be.

Prayers for the families of the fallen.

“Bend it like Bin Laden!” - omg lol!

I hope the Iraqis get really pissed off with al-Q now. Maybe they ought to start mass protests or something. Or kill al-Q themselves.

  8. Marked Right

It’s time for Al-Maliki to lead and unite the Iraqi people against AQ. Now’s the time for a FDR / Churchill like-speech calling for the rejection of terror and sectarian violence.

  9. azbastard

ditto with all the above…maybe they will use AQ heads for soccer balls
