Israel Sends 1000 Rifles To Fatah
Israel recently authorised a shipment of 1,000 rifles to the Palestinian Authority in the occupied West Bank, a newspaper reported on Thursday.
The largest ever arms transfer authorised by Israel to security forces loyal to Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas in the West Bank, it is meant to help prevent a possible Hamas challenge or takeover as in Gaza, Haaretz said.
A spokeswoman in Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office neither confirmed nor denied the report when questioned by AFP.
The weapons were delivered to security forces, whose Gaza colleagues were routed by Hamas fighters last month, under strict confidence to prevent any possible leak that could undermine Abbas’ standing, the paper said.
This year, several thousand rifles were delivered from Egypt and Jordan to Fatah forces in Gaza and the West Bank, but most have fallen into the hands of Hamas, which has controlled the Gaza Strip since mid-June, Haaretz said.
I think this is a good idea. The enemy of my enemy is my friend works when fighting relatively more dangerous opponent. If these weapons keep ending up in the hands of Hamas it would be a bad deal. Lets be real though, Hamas is certainly a bigger threat to Israel than Fatah is. I believe Abbas could be a partner for peace in the middle and Hamas’ reaction to them is a good indication of that
July 27th, 2007 at 10:43 amKurt, Israel has been trying this for ~15 years, and the weapons HAVE consistently made their way into the hands of the “Palestinian” faction that was determined to kill the most Jooooooos. Yet they still do it–the very definition of insanity!
The Ol’ Merde government makes Neville Chamberlain look like Gen. Patton.

September 6th, 2007 at 12:03 pmI think you make a good point. After all, when Abb-ass dies who will take over? what will happen tot he rifles then.
But, this issue is minor. the Iranian threat, and the emergence of the puppet army hezbullah takes precedence over the fifth column in Israel’s border.
Besides, look at it this way - any pal-ass-tinian man-ape with a rifle is a legitimate target to shoot at!
