BAGHDAD (AP) - Iraq’s foreign minister says a new round of U.S.-Iran talks will be held Tuesday in Baghdad.

“I can confirm that the United States and Iran have agreed to meet on July 24th in Baghdad,” Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

The Bush administration had said Tuesday that it was ready to hold a second round of direct talks with Iran, and Iran said it had accepted a U.S. invitation for talks.

Zebari’s comment was the first official confirmation of a date.

With those aircraft carriers out in the persian gulf, I was hoping for a best and final offer from the US.

So our representatives sit across a table from the Iranians and talk?

Is there a moment in the meeting’s agenda where the photos of 74 U.S. soldiers and marines killed by Iranian made IEDs and Iranian trained assasins and Iranian Quds fighters? Or would that cause an “uncomfortable silence” in the discussions.

I say invite them to the meeting, have our people go out for a last minute “discussion” and then blow up the damn meeting room.

Then we can send back the six charred remains of the Iranian diplomats to Teheran with a note saying, “Here’s six, we need 68 more”

    USMC_DAD:

Sure do. We talked while they rearmed and regrouped to attack us. The Arabs got a word for that. It’s called hudna.

Same game all over again. Good call.

i thought the very same thing. But it has to happen even though nothing good will come of it. We know they won’t change–we need to spell it out for the rest of the world, I guess.

I can see it now…civil conversation….nice meals…..talks of nothing that’s important or uncomfortable (PC of course)….us on our best behavior to avoid “insulting” the guests as everybody is eyeing each other up. Then as our friends walk away from the meeting they are turned into “red mist”…..oh the joy of it all

Walk in. Dump evidence of Iranian weapons on table. Pass out pics of nuclear explosions. Solicit questions. One word answer, WAR. Walk out.

DEBKA File has this as a headline” US, Iranian envoys to hold talks on Iraq’s security in Baghdad Tuesday”.

When you start reading the article it says nothing about meeting. When you click on MORE link again just the headline,” US, Iranian envoys to hold talks on Iraq’s security in Baghdad Tuesday” & nothing more, perhaps a tealeaf of the expected outcome? This meeting may be Iran’s last chance, President Bush means business.
