WASHINGTON (AP) - A new intelligence estimate says the terrorist network al-Qaida will leverage its contacts and capabilities in Iraq to attack U.S. soil, The Associated Press has learned.
The terrorist network Al-Qaida will likely leverage its contacts and capabilities in Iraq to mount an attack on U.S. soil, according to a new National Intelligence Estimate on threats to the American homeland.
The declassified key findings, to be released publicly on Tuesday, were obtained in advance by The Associated Press.
The report lays out a range of dangers—from al-Qaida to Lebanese Hezbollah to non-Muslim radical groups—that pose a “persistent and evolving threat” to the country over the next three years. As expected, however, the findings focus most of their attention on the gravest terror problem: Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida network.
The report makes clear that al-Qaida in Iraq, which has not yet attacked U.S. soil, will most likely become a problem here.
“Of note,” the analysts said, “we assess that al-Qaida will probably seek to leverage the contacts and capabilities of al-Qaida in Iraq (AQI), its most visible and capable affiliate and the only one known to have expressed a desire to attack the homeland.”
The analysts also found that al-Qaida’s association with its Iraqi affiliate helps the group to energize the broader Sunni Muslim extremist community, raise resources and recruit and indoctrinate operatives—”including for homeland attacks.”
Did I hear the cowards and morons in the senate are having some sort of a pajama party?
Any chance they will use some of the time to consider the consequences of stopping our military from crushing AQ in Iraq?
What is it going to take for them to pull their heads out? A nuke in Chicago?

Unfortunately, this could be the case. But given the fantasy in which the suits operate, I could also see it not doing a thing to their collective brain…..
The Hill is incapable of thinking ahead. They are not proactive, they are reactive, with their own lust for power being the primary motivator, and the people they were elected to serve being the secondary motivator.
July 17th, 2007 at 6:48 amEven after all this time, that picture of the towers burning makes my heart ache and my blood run cold.
July 17th, 2007 at 6:49 amIt is sad to say it but I do not think even if there was an attack here that the LL/Dems would think any differently than they do now. Many of them sympathize with the terrorists and buy into the whole “we deserved 9-11″ and I beleive that they will look at any subsequent attacks as being “deserved” as well. They will just yell that - Bush did it! Their thinking is so warped and only fixed on politics that they think nothing about the far reaching consequences of doing things their way not only for our country but the world. The more I see and hear of their take on things I hope I am no longer around if and when they are in control of this country.
