Finishing Off The Last Hunk Of Swiss Cheese
There was an infamous building across the street from the Al Anbar Government Center in Ramadi known officially as the Swiss Cheese building. It was the base of countless Al Qaeda ambushes on the Marines guarding the Government Center from its roof. It was those very Marines that made the building deserving of the name they ultimately gave it - they fired more shit into that building than you can imagine. Now, Iraqi buildings are notorious for taking a licking and keeping on ticking - they make brick shithouses look rickety. So it kept standing, but kept getting, well, swiss-cheesed. Finally, while I was there with 3/7, a platoon seargent by the name of Reed got sniped at from the building on his birthday. He called in the first airstrike on the ol’ holy edifice. It was fucked up greatly, but still standing and still used by the insurgents. Now keep in mind, the building had been getting hammered for about 2 years already. After 3/7 left, 3/8 took over, and as this clip will show, they also beat it down bit by bit ( in this clip the right half of the building is missing. Most of it was still there when 3/7 left ), and finally, on one afternoon, getting ambushed from it yet again ( I guess you could call it both a right of passage and tradition for each passing battalion ) called in an L-Mav strike that finally finished off the last hunk of swiss cheese in Ramadi.
damn.
