“After all the things he has said and all the oaths he took from his students that they should embrace martyrdom with him, look at this man,” Minister of State for Information Tariq Azeem said.

The quick rundown is that there’s a huge showdown going on in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, that has become big and nasty enough that President Musharraf has had to supervise the military and politcal response personally. You don’t want to read the long rundown, and I don’t want to write it. At least not now. Here’s the shorthand: Two brothers, Maulana Abdul Rashid Ghazi and Abdul Aziz, owned a mosque complex, containing also a school, dorms, and like that. The Government was pissed because 7 Islamabad mosques had just built their shit on land that the Government owned, like it was cool. The “Red Mosque” in question was one of them. In January, the Government told the mosques that the jig was up, and to evacuate. Basically everybody was shut down except the Red Mosque. They decided to try to hold onto their business by raising an army of students and citizens under the banner of Jihad. Their PR story would be: Us good Sharians fighting the secular government that’s trying to shut us down because of our beliefs and our desire to spread Shariocity throughout the land. Well a standoff ensued, a circus grew, Osama Bin Laden noticed, the government received intel that Al Qaeda fighers and suicide bombers had joined the “rebels” in the mosque compound, blah, blah, and it’s all reached a final showdown. The military and police have beseiged the mosque, people have been killed on both sides, 1000 or so surrendered yesterday, hundreds to thousands are believed left inside, and just this ( Thursday ) morning, the Army tore down the outer walls of the compound in preparation for the final and potentially bloody assault.

Here’s a story about the insurrection’s Instigator & Ringleader yesterday. He was arrested trying to escape in a dress. From the Pakistan newspaper “Dawn”.

By Syed Irfan Raza

TALKS between a three-member ulema delegation and Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Rashid Ghazi failed on Wednesday night after he refused to surrender unconditionally.

The head of the delegation, Maulana Zahoor Alvi, said Maulana Ghazi was not ready to surrender till the troops surrounding the mosque were withdrawn.

He said that during his visit to Lal Masjid he had seen bodies of five students lying in the mosque. He said he had also seen children aged five to eight there and asked Maulana Ghazi to let them go out. But Maulana Ghazi said they were his children and he could take care of them.

MAULANA Abdul Aziz, the leader of the Lal Masjid brigade, was arrested while trying to flee in a burqa.

“After all the things he has said and all the oaths he took from his students that they should embrace martyrdom with him, look at this man,” Minister of State for Information Tariq Azeem said.

Maulana Aziz was caught after a group of 50 burqa-clad women from the mosque started screaming as they were taken to a nearby school for security checks after giving themselves up, saying the procedure was un-Islamic.

“Our officers spotted his (Aziz’s) unusual demeanour. The rest of the girls looked like girls, but he was taller and had a pot-belly,” an official said.

ISLAMABAD, July 4: The government’s strategy of a massive display of military might, with machinegun-mounted armoured personnel carriers laying siege to the militant-infested Lal Masjid and security officials’ warnings of a ruthless crackdown worked on Wednesday and more than 1,100 men and women members and supporters of the radical brigade capitulated and surrendered unconditionally.

The public spectacle of the surrender continued throughout the day, during

which everyone who came out of Lal Masjid and the adjoining Jamia Hafsa was made to walk through metal detectors and was frisked by security officials and policewomen. Most men were also asked to walk with the belly showing as the authorities wanted to be sure that none of them carried suicide bomber’s explosive belt.

But perhaps the biggest blow to the heavily armed militants, who on Tuesday had vowed to continue their ‘jihad’ till the last drop of blood, came when their leader and chief khateeb Maulana Abdul Aziz was caught while trying to escape in disguise, wearing a burqa.

“Yes, I confirm that Maulana Abdul Aziz has been arrested along with his wife while he was trying to escape wearing burqa,” Deputy Commissioner Islamabad Chaudhry Muhammad Ali said. Religious Affairs Minister Ijaz-ul-Haq later justified the arrest of the cleric’s wife, saying that she was one of the key figures behind every thing that had happened there, and even on Wednesday had tried to prevent women students from leaving Jamia Hafsa.

Within minutes of his arrest, Maulana Aziz was whisked away by intelligence operatives to an undisclosed place.

Known for his firebrand speeches, calls for jihad and open threats in Friday sermons about having a brigade of suicide bombers inside Lal Masjid, Maulana Aziz tried to slip away by posing as one of the 50-odd women students who had offered to surrender.

But for an eagle-eyed woman head constable of the Special Branch, Maulana Aziz would have managed to slip away along with his wife.

A security official told Dawn that head constable Maryam was standing close to the outer gate observing all the women who were moving towards the parked buses when she got suspicious of the way two of the women were behaving. All other women were allowed to pass, but burqa-clad Maulana Aziz was stopped and Maryam surprised him by asking his name and he did not respond. It was soon revealed that behind the black burqa was the man, who for the last six months had been keeping the entire administration and the country in a state of panic.

It was ironic that a man who rarely got himself photographed was now making headlines with his image splashed on television channels showing him in an all-covering black burqa.

So embarrassing was the revelation for most radical and moderate Islamists that no one was prepared to justify the act. However, his younger brother and perhaps the more militant of the two, Maulana Abdul Rasheed Ghazi, remained defiant till the filing of this report and even expressed his annoyance over Maulana Aziz’s attempt to escape. (Some private TV channels reported late in the night that he had agreed to surrender).

But for most other people in Islamabad, and in other parts of the country, the incident was used to make fun of the militant clerics. Throughout the evening, jokes were doing the rounds, with people feeling a marked reduction in tension in the city. All this went on with the residential district of G-6, where the mosque is located, being under curfew. Only a small group of journalists managed to get some access to the area, which was much in contrast to the happening of the previous day when the pitched gunbattles between security forces and madressah militants took place with journalists and other watching.

It was also a conscious decision of the authorities to keep the media at bay in case a full-fledged security operation was to be launched.

On Tuesday, the area had seen some of the worst clashes ever witnessed in the capital. The daylong battles had left 10 people dead and over 150 injured. On Wednesday, another passerby became victim of firing by security forces in the curfew zone, where shoot-at-sight orders were enforced. Bodies of a number of people killed in overnight clashes were also found and officials said the death toll since Tuesday’s fighting stood at 16.

On Wednesday morning, the situation appeared different as people of G-6 area woke up to realize that the entire locality around Lal Masjid had been handed over to the army. There were APCs all over and army units in trucks fitted with machine-guns were patrolling G-6 and nearby localities.

Even though a military operation had appeared imminent after the deployment of army in the wee hours of Wednesday, it turned out that the authorities were using the policy of the carrot and stick with the help of religious leaders like Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Maulana Ghafoor Hyderi of Jamiat Ulema Islam(F), who were involved in proximity talks aimed at securing unconditional surrender of all those holed up inside the mosque.

Maulana Hyderi was at one point quoted as saying that the younger Maulana, Rasheed Ghazi, was also willing to give up provided the security forces were withdrawn from the area, but senior officials said they were not prepared to discuss any such condition.

The authorities also took advantage of President Gen Pervez Musharraf’s earlier announcement of a general amnesty to all those who had surrendered and who had no criminal records. However, officials said that all the men who surrendered were being taken to Adiala jail and would be released only after their record is checked for any criminal activities. Those found innocent would be given Rs5,000 to enable them to travel back home as most of them belong to the North-West Frontier Province.

The women of Jamia Hafsa were being kept at the Haj Terminal in Rawalpindi, and the authorities were yet to decide about their fate.

Meanwhile, local police registered a fresh case against Maulana Aziz, Maulana Ghazi and their spokesman Abdul Qayyum under Anti-Terrorism Act and six other sections of the Pakistan Penal Code relating to murder, wrongful confinement, assault on public servants, rioting with deadly weapons and unlawful assembly.

The day started with the killing of an unidentified man who had entered the ‘no go area’ from the Melody Market side. He was reportedly hit by a sniper deployed around Lal Masjid and on the roof of houses in the adjoining areas. His body was taken to the CDA Hospital.

The overnight siege of the area by SSG Commandos, 111 Brigade personnel and Rangers intensified on Wednesday after they were reinforced by more security personnel and four helicopters started aerial surveillance.

Several students started surrendering at around 11.15am when the mosque administration was given the first deadline of 11.30am to surrender. Till the filing of this report, about 1,100 had surrendered.

The crossfire between militants and security forces continued throughout the day with brief intervals.

The curfew continued in Sector G-6 till Wednesday night. Power supply to the area remained suspended for the second day.

Interior Ministry spokesman Brig Javed Iqbal Cheema said that residents would be provided food and water through vans. — With additional reporting by Mohammad Asghar, Munawar Azeem, Sherbaz and Khawar Ghumman.

This is justt another example of how weak minded individuals congregate to listen to some illiterate windbag. JIHAD, JIHAD is politically correct?????? We are far too tolerant of others. I say we bring back the traditions of Inquistions and Crusades. Scorched earth warfare, starting with Mecca and working West. One MOAB on Mecca-Square should get their attention. Show me one GOOD thing Islam has brought to the world and I’ll consider issuing a public apology to all leftist, politically correct, tree huggers. He’ll I might even send $1 to the Obama fund…..not.

  2. TJ

the stupid thing about it is that they are just letting the women and children go. the kids parents should be thoroughly questioned and kids sent somewhere to be de-brainwashed along with the adult women. these poor soulds are still a threat to society.

  3. danielle

I agree. Is there anyway they can be uhm “de-brainwashed” or something?

    Buerg;
You should know that without the Muslum comminities, most of the great classiclal works of the Greeks, Romans and early Christian Church would have been lost to time. At a time when our european forefathers were distroying themselves with the barabaic acts of the early middle ages, it was the Muslums who libaried and saved all of the sciences, medician and classics from the dust heap of history. Now I am no lover of radicals and have done my part for our Country but learn more befor you used a broad brush. I am a practicing Christian and live two miles from what was the Trade Center along with several years in the middle east and africa wearing an American uniform. As a people, the Muslum people belong and what should be watched is any extremism that denies any others rights; CHRISTIAN, JEW, Muslum and anyothers.
    Peace of Christ to all

    Mike:

I hear it said that not all Muslims are terrorists but how come all the terrorists are Muslim? I see a disconnect here. I have a friend who is a Muslim, but I never turn my back on him.

I’m also a Christian, but I didn’t see any Christians flying any planes into buildings on 9-11. didn’t see any Jews doing that either.

So what’s wrong with this picture? It’s simple. When Christians and Jews become more like their prophets, they become decent people. When Muslims become more like their prophet, they become an OBL.

So I’ve come to the conclusion that Muslims are the enemy.

And cherry-picking events from Muslim history doesn’t change that fact.

I remember 9-11. It wasn’t about our policies or about history, it was about hate. These people enjoy murder.

In conclusion: Fuck the towel heads. Only a sheep bends its head before it gets cut off….and I ain’t no fucking sheep.

Tariq Azeem gets it. These radicals do not fear death, but they do fear shame and will go to any length to avoid it. Mocking the leader in such a public and embarrassing manner–for his own cowardly attempt at escape while dressed as a woman–does more good than killing him. I personally would strip them all naked and parade them in front of 72 virgins. Let all who line the streets see them, point to them, and laugh.

    Dan,

I firmly bellieve the terrorists are not Muslim, but rather use that religion to hide behind and recruit from due to the huge percent of Muslims around the world that are impoverished. Mike ahs some valid points, the ancient Muslims were avid scholars, as are many today.

The terrorists are only interested in twisting the Koran to support their views. Many scholars and Muslims are against the teachings of the haters. They do want to live in peace. What we need to do is watch out for the inciters, and reach out to our neighbors that are against violence, lest misguided anger turn more people into terrorists. I know some Muslims, they are against the terrorists and state they are not Muslim, but devils that abuse the Koran, and will burn for their efforts.

We need to learn from history, and remember that almost all religions of the world have been used and twisted to torture and kill many innocents in the name of said religion. I do not care what any one else’s religion is, as long as it does not demand my transition from Christianity, and does not call for the death of innocents. There are millions of Jews, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists and adherents of other religious beliefs that feel this way.

And no not all terrorists are Muslim. Timothy McVey was not Muslim. Hitler and Mussolini weren’t either. Nor Stalin, Lenin, Mao Ghengis Khan or many others.

Pat does a great job with this site, and letting everyone voice their point of view is great as well. What we need is to stay focused on defeating the terrorists. We are not at war with Muslims. We need to stand firm, and wathc each others back from the terrorists, the MSM and the elected liberal facist socialist pigs portraying themselves as democrats.

12 years in the military I saw an awful lot out there, we need to keep our eyes and ears open, remain vigilant and not stereotype everyone out there lest we lead to more poeple out to “get even” for abusive behaviors. We are a nation of patriotic Americans, not skin heads.

Mike,I agree with you that during the dark ages our forefathers were barabaic. The difference is that we grew out of it. The muslums are still liveing in the dark ages and are doing everything that they can to force the rest of back into it with them. Weather we want to go or not.

You should read their Koran, and the Hadith, and the Sunna.

They’re not twisting their religion around at all. The Jihadis are FOLLOWING it.

I saw plenty during my 15 years in service. But one thing that I learned, was to research the facts before rendering a judgement.

    I done my homework.

Here’s a list of books to read there Brad:

Please explain the difference that you see between Islam and Islamic fundamentalism. Also, explain what you would do to stop the spread of Qur’anic literalism in the Islamic community, and how you would go about blunting the force among Muslims of such verses as 9:29, 9:5, and many others?

Keep in mind that a recent poll amoung Palestinians in the West Bank showed that 71% of them favored suicide attacks against Israel…even if those attacks killed innocent civilians. Is this representative of most of the Muslims in the world? I think it is.

  12. Clyde Conneer

The Arabs who libraried were not Muslims. In fact the entire library in Alexandria was sacked and burned by Muhamidans when Egypt was conquered.
Who has time to invent or create wilst washing feet to pray 5 times a day and enslaving half their people, the women, by disallowing them education and the right to even suggest.
Moreover who in Islam is protesting the abuses of the Jihadis?
Ask a Lebanonese Christian to identify a charitable Muslim.

Its a sham if you cant see them flying war planes on Afghanistan and Iraq and killing innocent people

  15. Buerg

True experience…..Baghdad 2004, my Muslim Translator asks me to pick up a copy of the English Koran in the PX so he and I can debate/discuss/argue about Islam vs Jihad. The first sura (chapter)I turn to is entitled “Mohammed” I figure this is where it starts, lets see what they say about him. Here’s a paraphrase of the first 2 pages. “…those who do not believe in Allah or the prophet Mohammed are infidels…remove the heads of the infidels until there is a great slaughter amongst them and their blood flows through the streets….never surrender when you have the upper hand…”

I ask my Iraqi friend to explain this. His reply, ”that’s bullshit…the Americans changed the words to make us look bad…the Arabic version does not say that”

I’m not completely close-minded to this possibility. So that night when “Ammar” is home, I get his version of the Koran. I have a Catholic friend from Beruit. He reads and writes 5 languages, has a degree in Engineering. Arabic and English are his two strong suits.

I had him the Arabic version first and tell him to read it. Then I hand him the English version and tell him to read the same passages. Guess what boys and girls?? Word for Word the same. I had 3 others translate the same pages to ensure it wasn’t tainted. Each time, I handed them the Arabic Version first and asked them to tell me what it said BEFORE I gave them the English version.

Keep in mind the high illiteracy rates in Iraq when you access the potential of jihadist recruits. Most Iraqis working class and peasants that I have come in contact with are unable to read or write Arabic. They depend on Clerics to explain the religious teachings of the Koran. Just as Catholics, Jews, and Protestants use their holy books to control the masses, radical thinking Muslims do the same.

I see we now have 2 options.

    A) B-52 strikes, fill the crater with water, stock with bass, and invite your buddies to the Mid-East Bass Tourny

    B) Donate $1 to the Hooked-On-Phonics for little jihadists. ”For the cost of a cup a coffee a day, you too can teach little Mohammed to read the peaceful message brought by the greatest prophet of all times”

I’m going to buy some worms, beer, and some ice for the cooler.

  16. Buerg

looks like I could use a little hooked on phonics myself. ASSESS and not ACCESS. Pat, can you add spell-check to this site? lol

“I firmly bellieve the terrorists are not Muslim, but rather use that religion to hide behind and recruit from due to the huge percent of Muslims around the world that are impoverished. Mike ahs some valid points, the ancient Muslims were avid scholars, as are many today. ”

The scholars so many talk about today include: sufi poet Jalauddin rumi (1207-1273), abu Nuwas(762-814)al -mutannabi (915-965)nesimi(d.1417) and hakim abu al-qasim firdowsi(935-1020) who set the history of persia to verse. their writings used mostly christian, zorastrian and pagan sources. most of these scholars were far from orthodox and were actually considered heretics who were often hunted down for insulting islam (particuularly ) abu nuwas. naturally these scholars preserved classic writings and translated them, but mostly because they were considerd off limits by islam. why because human writings cant compare to Allahs word, if they contradict they are to be discarded and the writiers shunned or killed.

“The terrorists are only interested in twisting the Koran to support their views. ”

Like dan said above, you need to read the quran and the sunnah. I recommend another great book by a former muslim who has had to use an assumed name for obvious resons. his name is Ibn warraq and his book is “Why I am not a muslim” he is equally critical of all religions but mostly his former one. he is now an atheist.

like dan said true islam from the perspective of muhammed is the kind practice by those we are fighting now. that is orthodox islam, the islam of the clerics, the ones the moderate muslims listen to as if God were speaking through them. I know muslims who are ignorant of the true teachings and example of muhammed precisely because they are told by clerics that the true quran is the one written in arabic alone so they must recite from it alone whether they know what it means or not. One friend was shocked to hear what the quran actually says.because they are ignorant they can say islam as they practice it is peaceful and this is true, but it is not a distortion of islam to say one must kill jews or any non muslims, there are too many texts in the quran and sunnah that affirm this. muhammed killed and asked others to kill,(quran 9:5,8:12, 8:39 he takes women (whose husbands the muslims killed) as sex slaves or “marries them” the women have no choice(buhkari V4b52n143). he took many slaves (buhkari V5B59n512)and stole the booty from those he killed. if someone insulted him , he had them killed ,(quran 33:56-60,Bukhari V4B52N270)and he raped a 9 year old girl who was conveniently his “wife” (Tabari IX 131 and buhkari)

Buhkari is the most authentic hadith in sunni islam which amkes up 80 % of the worlds muslims.

yet you guys , mike and brad w, repeat the age old lies of muslim clerics who have a vested interest in keeping their people ignorant so they may use them to kill them selves for allah at the appointed time. you use the relativist approach that we are all the same in history while ignoring the great differendce between islam and all other religions, the teachings and actions of its founder. the root of ignorance is ignore. ignorance doesnt mean yoour stupid only that you refuse to know the whole truth.

I suspect that mike is either a liberal atheist or a muslim spreading the same ridiculous propaganda.

mike you are very confused, aristotles work was saved from the ravages of the dark ages by the 5th century priest probus of antioch who introduced aristotle to the arabic speaking world.(see the book Islam by farah p.198)
the christian huneyn ibn ishaq translated many works by aristotle,,galen, plato and hippocrates into syriac which his son translated to arabic. jacobite syrian christian yahya ibn adi (893-974) translated works of philosophy into arabic and wrote the treatise “the reformation of morals” which has erroneously attributed to his muslim contemporaries.

remmeber muslim historians and clerics often refer to arabs and muslim interchangeably which accounts for why some non muslim philosophers are called muslim. there was a time when muslim culture was more advanced like in medical sciences and mathematics but none of these scientists were clerics unlike in christianity where many clerics were scientists and doctors. Muslims established the first pharmacies and wre the first to require standards of knowledge and competence from doctors and pharmacists enforced by examinations, yet advances in the medical sciences didnt come from muslims precisely because islam didnt allow for the artistic representation of the human body or inner organs and also didnt allow disections of human bodies. the christian and pagan persons were allowed to do so as such the belgian andreas vesalius 1514-1564 published thefirst accurate description of human internal organs (De humani corporis fabrica) in 1543.

even abu ja’far muhammed ibn musa al-kwarizmi, the father of modern day algebra(algorithm also is derived from his name), was not an orthodox muslim, his great works were studied in the west which helped lead to so many modern day advancements in science and technology yet those breakthroughs did not come from muslims ? why?

jafar and muslim commentators avicenna and averooes were studied extensively from the 12th century on in europe yet there wroks were largely ignored in the muslim world because the clerics, namely al ghazali 1058-1128 consigned such works to the trash heap because its proponents had the audacity to suggest that humanly revealed truths were equal to the divinely revealed ones.

this is the history of islam and you must ask yourself why it is still true today that muslim scholars of secular subjects are outside the clerical bodies whereas in christianity and other religions they are within and without? particularly from the time of al gahzali when muslims were making strides in science and philosophy , he was threatening their lives.

please try to stop pretending that you dont know the difference between taking a plane full of civilians and crashing it into a civilian building , and the bombing of military targets using military planes.

I realize you are a muslim who has been told ad nauseum that americans and israelis are trying to rid the world of the worlds only religion of peace and that we oppresses you poor victims on a regular basis, but try , at least that you have even a small modicum of common sense.

simplistic reasoning as this confirms the notion that too many muslims along with their liberal whiner cronies think with their emotions rather than their brains.

  19. John Cunningham

I don’t give a fuck about all that ancient shit. What are you doing today?. Busy making a bunch of asses out of yourselves. And if that interfears with what I’m doing I’m going to kill you. Got it, you silly moe slum bitches.

Tariq, I’d pay to see those planes over that shit pile.

  20. Brian H

    Buerg;
Wouldn’t help with ‘access/assess’. All the spell-checker knows is that both words exist, so they’re OK. That kind of confusion is called a “malapropism” or malaprop. Like: “The hair to the throne,” or “The paws that refreshes.” Maybe the most common are switching of “there, their, they’re”. Some people seem to just use them randomly, without a clue about the differences.

  21. John Cunningham

Brian H, yea, I hate it when they do that. Y’all hear that, get a clue.

  22. Dan

    Tariq:

Must be all that radon in your mommy’s basement? Or maybe you need to adjust that plate in your head to keep your brain synapse problem from interfering with reality.

Get your head out of your ass motherfucker. We don’t target civilians. That’s what you people do. More civilians have been killed by ali-fuckingbaba than by anyone else in this war.

Save your propaganda for Al Jazzera.

  23. Dan

    TJ:

I would add, go ask the Greeks what happened to their great civilization during 500 years of Muslim occupation.
You wonder why Greeks hate Turks so much? It is because the Muslims destroyed everything in Greece while they were there. Manuscripts, temples, churches et al…
Centuries of Greek civilization was put to the torch and the people enslaved by the “Religion Of Peace”.

Incidently for the unlearned Islam means “submission”. Submit or die. Or become a serf or a slave.

Fuck Islam. Fuck you Tariq. Fuck your child-molesting prophet.

  24. Dan

    Buerg:

You have alot of misconceptions. “Just as Catholics, Jews, and Protestants use their holy books to control the masses, radical thinking Muslims do the same.”

That’s bullcrap. Catholics, Jews and Christians are able to read their own holy books. No one controls their congregations. Any priest, Rabbi or Pastor, that tells their congregations how to live, best know their Holy Books better than their people do, or the pastors and rabbis would be out of a job.

In the Western world, no one has a monopoly on religion. People are free to think for themselves; and to accept or reject religious teachings.

Not so in Islam. Whether you can read or not, if you are in Islam and you want to change your religion, you would be killed by one of your male relatives. They call it an “honor killing”.

Freedom and tolerance are both the stregths and the weaknesses of the west. If Islam had the same world view, their mullahs would have no power over the masses.

Your view on Jews, Catholics and Protestants, might have been true 500 years ago, but no longer.

    TJ;
I am a conservative registered republican, irish catholic, 11th generation us navy (retired) combat veteran who’s family has been in the US since 1742 when they left Ireland with a crown warrent on their head for being catholic. I had a great, great grandfather who won a CMH for killing a reb general at Shilo. I have been involved in actions in Africa, Middle East, South American and a caribean resort island. Currently working as a NYC cop with five family members (including my oldest son) serving in the US Marines, Navy and Air Force (yes, every family has one!). As my fathers, I have sworn to protect this country and it’s constitution at all costs as have I expect my children and future grandchildren to do. Yes, I am old and while I get older, I see chickenhawks speaking big words have never held a saber. There is no honor in racism and we all the children of Abraham. I have never met a true warrior who did not understand horrors war and dream of peace. Be not afraid, for I will be in front of you. The future will be good
    Peace
    Mike the dumb irish cop
