U.K.: Lawmakers Say No To Tougher Terror Laws, Praise “Softer” Approach
LONDON (AP) - The British government has failed to prove the need to toughen anti- terrorism laws to let police detain suspects longer before they must charge or release them, a group of lawmakers said in a report Monday.
Parliament’s Joint Committee on Human Rights commended Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s new government for a “significant change of approach and tone” in its anti-terrorism policy, which is seen as more sober and less alarmist than the policy under Tony Blair’s government.
However, the committee’s report said the government had yet to demonstrate that police need more time to question terror suspects, who must now be charged or released within 28 days. Brown has said his government was considering extending that period.
“As far as we’ve heard there has not yet been a case where 28 days was inadequate,” said committee chairman Andrew Dismore, a lawmaker from the ruling Labour party. “This is being proposed on the possibility that it might be in future.”
Blair proposed a 90-day limit after the deadly July 2005 transit bombings in London. The plan was defeated by lawmakers, who compromised on 28 days instead of an earlier 14-day limit. The debate has continued, flaring again in 2006 after authorities revealed an alleged plot to blow up trans-Atlantic jetliners, and after June’s failed car bombings in London and Glasgow, Scotland.
The Monday report also criticized the use of control orders, a type of partial house arrest created after judges ruled suspects could not be detained indefinitely without trial. And it said facilities for holding terror suspects before they are charged are inadequate, recommending a new one be built.
Glad my ancestors left there for in 1635.
July 29th, 2007 at 6:41 pmMusn’t upset them, now shall we?
July 29th, 2007 at 7:13 pmLooks like Brown is a pussy after all! They’re gonna cave to pressures from their equivalent of our ACLU, The “ruling Labour party”
July 29th, 2007 at 7:40 pmI’m glad my ancestors bailed too. How could the Brits go from a man like Tony Blair to this retard? I predict that within the next 10 years Britain will either face full-on Islamization or armed revolution.
July 29th, 2007 at 7:53 pmThats just great, wasnt it Margaret Thatcher that warned Bush 41 not to go wobbly on terrorism? Seems she havbe more balls than Brown, how long before AQ makes Brown their B*t*h?
July 29th, 2007 at 7:58 pmThese are the same folks who think its real funny for men to dress up as women. Their “pussies in pantsuits” image is more than just skin deep. Its infiltrating their minds through and through. Its happening to leaders in the U.S., too. Where are all the real men? I know the military is full of them, but what’s happened to the West’s leaders? I don’t know what Meds they are on, but maybe Big Pharma is turning us all into ladies. It will be our ruin unless we cut back on the estrogen and beef up on testosterone.
July 29th, 2007 at 8:02 pmYeah what happened to the bulldog mentality in Britain? you cant tell me they want to become another Islamic republic. Oh the Islamic republic Britain, gotta tell you, I dont like the sound of that. Bunch of pussies in the Government over there need to enact the will of the people and get tough with these Muzzies before its too late
July 29th, 2007 at 8:17 pmGee, I miss Tony Blair.
July 29th, 2007 at 10:01 pmWell, it is, as the saying goes, their funeral.
July 29th, 2007 at 10:43 pmno matter what way you shake it with this call, they are fucked. what are they worried about. AQ feelings?
July 29th, 2007 at 11:10 pmThe liberal mentality just cant grasp the concept that there are ideologies in the world that will never except anything less then total submission to their will.
This lets be friends.. Less forceful attitude is correctly seen as weakness and cowardice. If we’re just more nice.. They’ll be nice too. Please….
All I can keep saying is.. Take names of the cowards and when the crap hits the fan we know to hold personally responsible for the mess.
We cleaned house of collaborators and traitors in Europe after WWII. It looks like we’ll have to do it again when Europe self destructs under the weight of it putrid pacifism.
July 29th, 2007 at 11:23 pmHow pathetic.
July 30th, 2007 at 12:02 am“We cleaned house of collaborators and traitors in Europe after WWII. It looks like we’ll have to do it again when Europe self destructs under the weight of it putrid pacifism.”

July 30th, 2007 at 3:26 amJust amazing the stupidity of those who are supposed to be leaders. They will cry like bitches too when their country is taken over and expect us to help them out, just like WWII. IDIOTS!!!!
July 30th, 2007 at 4:55 amWhen the rights of TERRORISTS outweigh the SECURITY of nations, CIVILization is doomed. Result = islamic rule
July 30th, 2007 at 6:12 amAddendum: Nothing secure or civil about Sharia law
July 30th, 2007 at 6:13 amI guess the English Bulldog has become a French poodle? Neville Chamberlain lives!!
July 30th, 2007 at 6:32 amFYI this Brown guy was the “Shadow Minister” to Tony Blair, he basically ran the day to day administration of the government.
Most Brits are not as ignorant to the domestic and international threat unlike the elitists that believe the more they embrace and engage the radicals the less chance that their head will the first on the chopping blocks at the Tower of London. Reagan had a great quote something like feeding people to a hungry alligator hope that your won’t get eaten as well.
The Mega Mosque in London that is proposed to literally change the skyline of London is being protested by the locals and the Brits as well but doesn’t get much play in the media. There are a lot of things going on in the country that offend the sensibilities of the average Brit as far as the direction of the country.
I travel regularly to the UK and each time I speak with friends, not the skinheads xenophobes that are rolled out for the cameras, but educated types that are frustrated at the fact that Britain is becoming steadily un-British. They despise the EU, which their parents voted for in the 70s, and that is why they fight to stay off the Euro (If you don’t want to look like an ass in the UK don’t use Euros they hate them), and that again is why they rejected the EU Constitution overwhelmingly. Brits like being British and value their country and feel like the rug is being pulled out from underneath them.
Gordon Brown right now appears to be angling to be remembered by history as this century’s Neville Chamberlain. He is a tool and the one thing that is going to change all of this is a successful mass casualty attack in the UK, he will either rise to the challenge and surprise everyone or he will have a recommended list of readings for the population so they will become informed as to why they brought the attack upon themselves.
The Jihadis cannot control themselves and want to attack and don’t care who is in office. The same is true over here, but don’t discount the Brits as cut of the same cloth as Brown, but the MSM drives the story as to the Brits are going to break from the US, which is not true despite their wishful thinking.
The press here is overwhelmingly leftist ideological propaganda just like in Britain. For average Brits it is true like the majority who post their opinions here, the press here does not take a neutral objective position, but claim to speak for the masses when that is far from the truth.
Just wait and see.
July 30th, 2007 at 6:46 amNeville Chamberlain redux.
July 30th, 2007 at 8:29 amTruly sad. Looks like the ghost of Neville Chamberlain is alive and well in the British Government.
July 30th, 2007 at 9:47 amPeople too wrapped up with PC bullchit to defend themselves are retards! No… let’s not insult retards. They are nothing. May the weak have some politically-silent few among them who will fight when the shit hits the fan.
July 30th, 2007 at 10:48 amand expect us to help them out, just like WWII. IDIOTS!!!! if you mean coming over and doing a mess alike in Irak, no, thanks
I guess the English Bulldog has become a French poodle
actually, Tony Blair is called poodle in EU
If you don’t want to look like an ass in the UK don’t use Euros they hate them), and that again is why they rejected the EU Constitution overwhelmingly.
yeah, that is why every boutique, commerce, trade or businesses work with euros in London and almost every towns in UK, for they are not so fool, money is money !
BTW, Brits didn’t undergo through a vote for EU constitution, that were the Frenchs and Nederland who rejected the EU constitution ; Brits were expecting our result to engage their referendum ; as the “no” won they didn’t want to risk a “no” in their country just when it happened that Tony Blair would have handled the head of EU
July 30th, 2007 at 11:28 amThey create a monster for their children and then they refuse to fight it . More proof Britian is now run by a bunch of pandering petrified pussies .
