Ninewa, Aug 19, (VOI) – A suspected senior leader of the Al Qaeda group Islamic State of Iraq and seven of his aides were arrested in northern Mosul, the Ninewa police chief said on Sunday.
“Police forces arrested Rakan Abu Saleh, known as the ruler of al-Jazira area (on the fringes of Mosul) of the Islamic State of Iraq group, was arrested along with seven of his aides on Friday,” Maj. General Wathiq al-Hamadani told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
“The policemen identified them in al-Majmouaa al-Thaqafiya area, northern Mosul, and turned out to have fake identification cards,” he said.
Hamadani pointed out that Abu Saleh, during investigations with him, “confessed that he was involved in several armed attacks on civilians and security authorities and that he was one of several men who carried out the armed attack on Badosh prison and the subsequent escape of 140 prisoners.”
Badosh prison has come under attack in early March 2007, which led to the escape of 140 prisoners including the sons of Barzan and Watban al-Tikriti, the step-brothers of the former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.
Abu Saleh also confessed to taking part in the al-Wihda neighborhood bombings in Tal Afar, western Mosul, where three truck bombs went off in late March 2007, killing 51 people and wounding 183 others, most of them civilians, said Hamadani.
Mosul, the capital of Ninewa province, lies 402 km north of Baghdad.
