Key Al Qaeda Chief Killed In Raid
Hilla, Aug 21, (VOI)- A leader from al-Qaeda in Iraq organization was killed in clashes between Iraqi army forces and gunmen on Tuesday south of Baghdad, an Iraqi army source said.
“Iraqi army forces waged a security crackdown, this morning, in al-Latifiya region, south of Baghdad, where they clashed with gunmen,” the source, who asked not to be named, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
The source added “U.S. helicopters offered support to the Iraqi forces during the clashes.”
“The forces found after the clashes the body of Aziz Mashaan Hassan, leader of al-Qaeda in north Hilla regions, thrown in a hideout,” he added.
The source did not add more details on the outcome of the clashes.
An Iraqi army source had said earlier that army forces launched a security operation on Monday afternoon in al-Latifiya region, where 50 gunmen were arrested.
Al-Latifiya is located 70 km north of Hilla and 30 km south of Baghdad.
