They were the Nazi party of the country. Without party membership, you were a suspect and you could be killed. You could not hold a job or travel freely without such membership. However, the leaders and officers of that party were members of Saddam's tribe. That was an exclusive membership...and "being educated" was not a requirement. Tribe membership not education trumped all other standards for membership. The only mistake that the Bremmer administration made is in disbanding the Iraqi police. They should have learned from our experience in WWII in which we kept the German police forces intact while vetting captured German military officers through the de-Nazification program. Keeping the old Iraqi police in power would have mitigated the looting that pissed off the average Iraqis at the beginning of the war. Iraqis need "adult supervision" but in the Western way. Mitigating the rioting and looting at the beginning of the war could only have been accomplished by shooting the looters. That's the kind of law and order that Iraqis want. So, hopefully, this new program will give the Iraqis what they want: An iron hand in their internal affairs. The Baath party wasn’t necessarily educated. They were the Nazi party of the country.
