More Than 100 Dead In Massive Taliban Overrun Attack

U.S.-led coalition troops and their Afghan allies killed more than 100 Taliban fighters in an air-supported infantry battle in Kandahar province, the coalition said late Tuesday.
The battle in the Shah Wali Kot district of the southern province started after the joint force was ambushed in a 360 degree attack by a huge Taliban force. The guerrillas tried to overrun the coalition position several times as they were relentlessly beaten back and ultimately strafed with large guns in the sky. Details were provided by the coalitions written statement.
An Afghan soldier and more than 100 militants were killed, the coalition said. Three coalition troops and three Afghan soldiers were wounded.
Kandahar is the southern province of Afghanistan that was the birthplace of the Taliban and remains the closest thing to any sort of refuge they have in the country.
The vast majority of coalition troops are American.
In eastern Afghanistan, a suicide bomber attacked North Atlantic Treaty Organization troops helping to build a bridge Tuesday, killing three American soldiers, a U.S. official said.
Also Tuesday, the U.S.-led coalition said its troops raided a house near Kandahar city, killing two Taliban and detaining five.
Those targeted were accused of facilitating bomb attacks, the statement said.
