The look in O’Toole’s eyes at the end says it all.

Man, how I love the movie Lawrence of Arabia.

My favorite line, by Prince Feisal (Sir Alec Guiness):

“Young men make wars, and the virtues of war are the virtues of young men: courage, and hope for the future.
Then old men make the peace, and the vices of peace are the vices of old men: mistrust and caution.
    It must be so.”

If you haven’t seen it, I highly recommend it. Though it’s pretty slow moving, the political question at the end parallels our current political situation in the middle east: Are people capable of governing themselves democratically?

Michael Yon has discussed this situation lately, observing that our military commanders have displayed a “hidden talent” for administering Iraqi cities much better than the Iraqi civilians, who have been oppressed by having to live in a socialist society for so many years, where they didn’t have to learn to fend for themselves. He also notes that there are a few brave Iraqi souls who are stepping up to take leadership of the situation, and the people are learning that there are responsibilities associated with the rights they are granted as free people.

I admire our military more and more every day. Definitely the next “Greatest Generation”.

O’Toole and Arafat would have gotten along well together.

  8. Bill

I think there are many people and parts of our own country that seem to incapable of electing good representatives, ex. Byrd, Kennedy, Murtha etc etc etc. Utterly incompetent.

    Dan -

The real O’Toole or the character in this clip?
