Brits Begin To Leave Iraq
The total is currently scheduled to be 500. Thereafter the British are drawing up plans for a cut of about 2,000 next spring, leaving 3,000 at the airbase. :
Baghdad, Sept 8, (VOI) – The British army in Iraq announced that it will cut its troops in Basra by 250 soldiers during the next few weeks.
“One of our combat units – composed of 250 soldiers – was notified on Saturday that it will leave for Britain during the three weeks to come,” Maj. Matthew Bird, the spokesman for the British forces in Basra, said in a statement received by the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
“Further cuts will be considered after reviewing the conditions of British forces in Iraq,” added Bird.
There are about 5,500 British soldiers in Basra at present.
A source in the British defense ministry had said last week that British troops have started withdrawing from one of their bases in the former presidential palaces in the southern Iraq city of Basra.
“The cut is a standard objective known for a long time. There are no changes in our policies as far as backing Iraqi forces is concerned,” the statement read.
Marines say what would Chesty do? Brits should be saying what would Winston do?
September 8th, 2007 at 2:11 pmCut and run while your side is winning is a real strange strategy. All the grief, none of the spoils of victory. Timing is everything, being replaced by Poland and France on the world stage is not good — Now all the Brits get is to sit next to Spain.
How sad for such valiant warriors, the British soldiers. But how true to form for old Europe.

Hope no-one here is planning any trips to (formerly great) Britain anytime soon…
