Bush To Address Nation
US President George W. Bush said Saturday he would make a speech, expected next week, to defend his strategy in Iraq and urge the war-weary US public to rally behind it.
“I will discuss the changes our strategy has brought to Iraq. I will lay out a vision for future involvement in Iraq — one that I believe the American people and their elected leaders of both parties can support,” he said.
Bush recorded his weekly radio address from Sydney where he was attending a meeting of Asia-Pacific leaders.
Bush said he would speak after the US commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, and the US ambassador to Baghdad, Ryan Crocker, testify to the US Congress on the trends in the strife-torn country.
Petraeus and Crocker were to speak to lawmakers ahead of a September 15 progress report from the White House to Congress amid renewed questions about the reliability of official US data about issues such as civilian deaths in Iraq.
Media reports suggested that the unpopular president would deliver his speech on Thursday. White House officials have declined to specify the date of the remarks.
“Next week, after consulting with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, my national security team, members of Congress from both parties, and Iraqi leaders, I will speak directly to the nation about the recommendations General Petraeus and Ambassador Crocker have presented to me,” Bush said.
“By coming together on the way forward, we will strengthen Iraq’s democracy, deal a blow to our enemies, secure
interests in the Middle East, and make our nation safer,” Bush said in his weekly address.
Bush, under heavy political pressure to draw down US forces, has hinted this week that he might consider doing so if the successes he saw during a surprise Monday trip to Anbar province can be replicated throughout Iraq.

The only way to victory is to defeat the dhimocratz in Congress and the LMSM first. Victory on the ground is already being won. It’s late in the 3rd quarter in Iraq and our team is ahead. Let’s keep it that way.

September 9th, 2007 at 1:28 pmThe dems are absolutely petrified about this testimony and the report that comes on Friday. The stakes are high, and they know it.
They still can’t do a damned thing about it, except to make sure schticks like this and today’s NYT piece (which I refuse to link to) get lots of air time.
Petraeus was confirmed with a vote of 81-0. The dems let his nomination slide because no one knew what was coming. He was confirmed in January. The emergency supplemental that fully funded the surge came in late May. The combat ops funded by the ES and the surge started in mid June.
A funny thing happened on the way to the defeat they had planned. Our guys started kicking ass and taking names, and now the dems have their heads pinned to the headboard and their asses laid bare.
They should just smile, moan a little, and ask for a reacharound.
