KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) - Heavy battles punctuated by airstrikes killed 75 suspected Taliban on Friday.

Airstrikes were called in against “anti-coalition militants” in the Garmsir district of Helmand province early Friday, killing about 40 fighters, the coalition said. Soldiers found more than 20 rocket-propelled grenades, ammunition and land mines in the militants’ compound, it said.

NATO began a new operation Wednesday in southern Helmand province, the world’s largest poppy growing region and site of the heaviest fighting in Afghanistan this year.

In another newly reported battle, more than three dozen Taliban fighters were reported killed in a clash Wednesday in Uruzgan province, the coalition said.

The fighting began when Afghan and coalition troops spotted a dozen insurgents planting roadside bombs, sparking a 14-hour battle that included airstrikes against Taliban fighters taking cover in village homes, it said.

Separately, a bombing in Kabul targeting a French military convoy killed one soldier and an Afghan civilian and, hospital and NATO officials said. The blast blew the windows out of a civilian bus and set at least one vehicle on fire.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy condemned the attack as “cowardly and odious.”

Dunno how many of you read historical fiction. There is a great book called “The Afghan Campaign” by Steven Pressfield detailing the experiences of Alexander the Great in Afghanistan, one of the few places he could not conquer outright and pacified only by marrying Roxanne, daughter of a local potentate. It is a great read, but a bit depressing in that it made me think we lack the ruthlessness of the Ancient World and may never be able to kill our way out of this….

God how I truly love it when they don’t make any mention of prisoners being taken.

Good news.. The more we kill the crazies the more diluted the population becomes of crazies and the trend toward a more stable environment quickly evolves.

The difference in this war is that unlike Alexander we aren’t fighting Afghans. We are ALLIED with them. It isn’t the Afghans that are the problem…it is the Paki ratfink Islamofacists.

BTW, this is the second time in our history that we have alined ourselves with the Afghanis. The real mujahadeen are the current Afghani government. In effect, we like Alexander have married Roxanne.

And Alexander didn’t have smart bombs or their delivery systems. Take heart Keltoi, we have as many smart bombs as it will take. I would be more concerned about the lack of smart democrats here at home.
