VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - A ground-based missile successfully intercepted a target missile Friday in a test of the nation’s defense system, the Missile Defense Agency said.
An intercontinental ballistic missile interceptor blasted out of an underground silo at Vandenberg Air Force Base shortly after 1:15 p.m., and tracked a target missile that had lifted off from the Kodiak Launch Complex in Alaska, the Boeing Co. said in a statement.
The Missile Defense Agency said initial results show the interceptor’s rocket motor system and kill vehicle performed as planned. Boeing said the warhead was tracked, intercepted and destroyed.
Boeing is the prime contractor for what is formally known as the Ground-Based Midcourse Defense system.
The MDA expects to invest $49 billion in ballistic missile defense development and fielding over the next five years.
Two operational interceptor missiles are currently based at Vandenberg and there are 11 deployed at Fort Greely, Alaska.

September 28th, 2007 at 8:29 pmI saw a pro-Iran video about their armed forces with some German death metal music and part of the lyrics is ‘bang-bang’ and the vid showed explosions ‘n shit. Well if you look at their aircraft, in particular they have old F-4 Phantoms. A beautiful aircraft, full of history and proud service… that we use for target drones. I wouldn’t want to be an Iranian F-4 pilot. If we go toe to toe with these guys, we will obliterate their armed forces and they will be forced to go guerilla.
September 28th, 2007 at 8:41 pmThat’s ok. The way the borders are open we won’t need to worry too much about missile attacks here.
September 28th, 2007 at 10:08 pmNo shit, whats the bigger fear? a missile flying here or some Jihadi just walking across our open borders with a suitcase nuke? But this will protect us in case those damn Russians start it up again
September 29th, 2007 at 6:23 amNow that is a good use of our tax dollars.
September 29th, 2007 at 6:35 amAnd the Iraniacs have reverse-engineered their old F-5’s to produce a home-grown fighter of their own. F-5’s or their derivatives make nice target drones too. And their old F-14’s? We sabatouged them back in ‘79. They got speed, but would be no match for an F-22 or F-15E. Especially considering that a fighter plane is only as good as it’s pilot. A dogfight with Iraniacs would be a thing of beauty and an opportunity for someone in the US military or IDF military to become an ace.
The Iraniac air force is a fucking joke.
