Tony Scott On “Young Americans”

AP, September 26:

Turns out that Tony Scott, the big-screen director and producer whose credits stretch from “Top Gun” to “Crimson Tide” to “Man on Fire,” sweats the small stuff…

…although the episode ( he was directing ) displays more cinematic sweep than is usual for “Numb3rs,” he wasn’t trying to overhaul the show, which he produces with his also famous filmmaker-brother, Ridley Scott (”Gladiator”).

“Just tweak it, give it a little more pace, a little more momentum,” he explained. He also brought in a movie colleague, Val Kilmer, to guest star in a small but pivotal role.

For the English-born Scott, shifting between movies, TV and commercials (he’s directed BMW spots that are mini-action films) is satisfying.

“I like changing the pace of my life, changing my discipline. It gives me ideas for how to see the world differently,” he said.

Diversifying also makes sense economically, he acknowledged.

“If a TV shot hits and you get into syndication, which we’re chasing and are close to, that’s when you start to make the real money,” Scott said. Shows try to amass about 100 episodes, or about four seasons’ worth, before going into the rerun marketplace.

Television also has proved a creative adventure for him. Often working with his brother, he’s produced projects including the movie “RKO 281,” about the making of “Citizen Kane,” and the Winston Churchill drama “The Gathering Storm.” A sequel, “Churchill at War” is in production.

“I see it as a great arena that I want to be involved with more,” he said. His voice rising with enthusiasm, he mentions “Young Americans,” a reality show about soldiers in Iraq that he’s producing. Pat Dollard, a Hollywood agent who visited Iraq as an independent filmmaker and whose Web site outlines his support for the war, is director and producer.

“When I say reality show, that’s a terrible word in this day and age,” Scott said. “But it’s the ultimate one because it’s about troops in the trenches. It’s charming, it’s touching, it’s everything. Most of all, it’s emotional.”

good to see an objective assessment of “young americans” I like that scott refrains from judging the right or wrongness of the war,but rather sees the documentary for what it is: reality!

Ridley Scott rocks. If his brother is as good as Ridley Scott, then this project will be a HUGE success. About fucking time that someone put out a flick that tells the truth about Iraq and the war for a change. I’m tired of the traitors and their bullshit.

Ha. So AP is starting to shift it’s negative “Bush’s war” mentality to dealing with it as a serious conflict starting with reporting of the other position of the war in Iraq.
Similar to the top Dem candidates position change of “maybe we shouldn’t pull out right away” as one of them might soon be the CIC (hurts to write that) and can’t have a loss in Iraq tagged to their Presidency.
    Coincidence? Yeah, right…
    Regardless, kudos Pat.

    Pat -

I can not thank you enough. Thank you so much for holding up through the tough times in supporting the troops and their mission. We are winning this war and I can say your views and your site has helped a LOT of Americans understand that and change their views of the entire situation over there and here.

Every person I have talked to in regards to the Iraq war, that has seen it or our troops in a bad light, I send to your site. Their minds are changed and the tone is also changed.
    Kudos and GREAT job!

    Thank you!

Thank you for your support Pat. I look forward to being able to see the truths that myself and all my brethren know presented to the general population. Still, I am saddened that it has come to the point where we must praise a man just for telling the truth.

Could he re title it ‘Days of Thunder Run’?

The PR run will be interesting. Keep us linked please, I will enjoy watching the biases exposed.

“Young Americans” … The left’s gonna hate it … I can’t fucking wait!!!!

[Scott, 63, also is producing the TV miniseries “The Scott, 63, also is producing the TV miniseries “The Andromeda Strain” ” ]

If it’s a new take on the 1971 movie I am hoping the ending makes a little more sense … It’s right up there with “2001: ASO” on the “duuhhhhhh—” movie endings for me.

  19. Sandy K.

It is very sad that the reality and the truth
about our brave and dedicated troops has been
    unseen in mainstream media.

Congrats Pat! You know we are all very anxious
    to see your film.

The outcry, the hate, the finger pointing, the headbanging of the leftist idiots unhinged in America is going to be deafening!
