Whodunnit? Two Sadrist Clerics Killed In Basra
OK, taking bets…whodunnit? Is it the rival Badr Organization (formerly Badr Brigades) with whom the Sadrists have clashed numerous times? Or was it Al Qaeda in Iraq still stirring crap up? Or…who? Maybe those man-eating badgers? Nah, bullets were used…who did it?
Basra, Oct 5, (VOI)- Unknown gunmen attacked and killed two Sadrist clerics in two separate attacks in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, an official source from Basra provincial council said on Friday.
“Unknown gunmen, last night, stormed the house of Sheikh Yasser al-Yasseri in western Basra, and killed him,” the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
The source added “al-Yasseri worked as a teacher in the Islamic University of Sadr in Basra.”
Meanwhile, the same source said that another teacher working for the Islamic University of Sadr was killed outside his house in northern Basra on Wednesday night.
The Sadr movement, people loyal to the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, has an Islamic University in the predominantly Shiite city of Basra.
“The series of assassinations targeting clerics in Basra are meant to create sedition among the religious trends in the city,” the source noted.
Last month, the Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr ordered to freeze all armed activities of the Mahdi army, the military wing of Sadr’s movement, after clashes erupted in the Shiite sacred city of Karbala while pilgrims were observing a Shiite occasion in the city.
The freezing decision was taken as accusations were directed to fighters from the Mahdi army of being behind Karbala clashes that left 35 dead and over 100 wounded.
The Sadr’s followers denied such accusations and offered the freezing decision as a move to quell all elements who might contribute to disrepute their military wing, the Mahdi army, by violating the freezing order by Sadr.
Sounds like a mean game of “king of the hill” to me. Last man standing wins.
