Giuliani Tells Obama ‘You’re No Reagan’
“Here’s what Ronald Reagan did before he negotiated with communists,” the former New York mayor continued. “First he called them the evil empire. Then he took missiles, intermediate-range missiles … and he put them in European cities, and he pointed the missiles at Russian cities with names on them. Then he said, in a very nice way, ‘Let’s negotiate.’”
WASHINGTON - Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani on Tuesday ridiculed Democratic rival Barack Obama for saying he would meet, without precondition, with leaders of renegade nations.
The Obama campaign answered back, arguing that Giuliani may not want to engage in diplomacy with outlaw leaders but he’s been willing to take their money.
Addressing the Republican Jewish Coalition, Giuliani described Obama’s offer, during a presidential debate in July, to meet as president with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea.
“Then he went on to explain that Ronald Reagan negotiated with the communists,” Giuliani said, pausing and sighing. “I say this most respectfully: You’re not Ronald Reagan, you know?”
The audience in a downtown Washington hotel laughed and clapped.
“Here’s what Ronald Reagan did before he negotiated with communists,” the former New York mayor continued. “First he called them the evil empire. Then he took missiles, intermediate-range missiles … and he put them in European cities, and he pointed the missiles at Russian cities with names on them.
“Then he said, in a very nice way, ‘Let’s negotiate.”’
Obama’s campaign had a ready response, citing the links between Giuliani’s law firm and Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez.
“While Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton do not think we should engage in the type of strong diplomacy practiced by Ronald Reagan and John Kennedy,z, but it’s fine to take his money.”
Giuliani’s law firm, Houston-based Bracewell & Giuliani, represents an American subsidiary of an oil company controlled by Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. Petroleos de Venezuela, the country’s national oil company controlled by Chavez, purchased U.S.-based Citgo Petroleum Corp. in 1990, and Giuliani’s firm represents Citgo before the Texas legislature.
To date, Giuliani has directed most of his criticism at Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Guliani telling Obama he is no Ronald Reagan is the worlds biggest understatement. The truth is and sadly stated that Ronald Reagan was one of a kind. He did so much for this country that it actually took us time to sit back and see how brilliant he truly was. Guliani would make a great President, he definitely stuck with the victims families and gave the city of New York his unbreakable attention throughout the period of the 9/11 attacks, and pulled this country together..Win, lose or draw in the 08 election he is still a great man in my book
October 16th, 2007 at 9:13 pmAfghan president concerned over alleged US Koran abuse
Afghan President Hamid Karzai is concerned over allegations US troops burnt a copy of the Koran and will take “suitable action” should the claims be proven, his spokesman said.
“The president heard the news from the Afghan authorities and the media with much concern and is aware of it,” Homayun Hamidzada told reporters.
“We contacted the forces urgently and they have assured us they will investigate the issue,” Hamidzada said.
He said if it was proven the soldiers had committed “such an obscene crime,” his government would take appropriate measures to punish the troopers.
“If proved, Afghanistan will take suitable action for such an important and serious matter. So far there is not sufficient evidence to prove the issue,” he said.
Members of parliament and village elders have claimed that US troops burned and tore up a copy of the Muslim holy book early Saturday during a raid in the eastern province of Kunar.
The US military has rejected the allegations but said it would try to find out what had happened. Afghan investigators have sent burnt pages from a Koran to Kabul for tests to verify when they were set ablaze.
At a heated meeting in the Kunar capital of Asadabad on Sunday, villagers from the district where the raid occurred demanded an apology.
Iran called on Monday for worldwide protests.
There are some 55,000 foreign soldiers here, about half of them from the United States, helping Afghan security forces fight back an insurgency by the extremist Taliban movement that was in government between 1996 and 2001.
October 16th, 2007 at 9:36 pmReagan was the best leader that we have had in a long time. He was saved this country from near ruin. However, I’m tired of people wanting to be Ronald Reagan or comparing other people to him or using Reagan as some sort of reference point. I don’t think that Giuliani should try to be a Reagan. He needs to be his own person and be a leader. You can’t fake leadership or copy leadership. We will never have another Reagan. What we need is another leader.
October 16th, 2007 at 10:20 pmjim, the koran burning incident is just another attempt by islamists to bring in a controversy that portrays americans in a negative light and by proxy unite muslims against the “crusaders”. Its a sign al qaeda is getting desperate and they will need good luck proving the allegation. I dont doubt a koran was burnt, perhaps after a firefight and likely by the taliban in order to incite people.
Karzai sounds more and more like a politician everyday, saying he will bring justice on the american troops. yeah right!
October 17th, 2007 at 12:10 amackbar obama is attempting to rewrite that part of our past. daaaveocrats would lead you to believe that we “chatted” with the Communists. It turned out that teddy was the only one chatting behind Reagan’s back. Did the Communists take the wall down in ‘89 because we chatted or because they were not sure if Reagan would unleash the hounds? daaveocrats think all of us that were alive back then have all died by now. No, very much alive with our minds intact and in full control of our wits, you witless bastards.
October 17th, 2007 at 2:46 amFrank, Dean-o, you guys are like happening cats, babe!
Sammy - we miss you.
Obama, you’re an empty suit. Now go away.
October 17th, 2007 at 3:38 amHe’s no Reagan? He’s barely to the level of the guy I saw on the news last night booked for a gang shooting…
October 17th, 2007 at 4:31 amDoes Obama realize that Kennedy helped escalate Viet Nam by sending 120,000 troops into the area at the request of the french? On the other hand, he was the last democrat to issue a tax cut. I’m not a huge Rudy fan either but I think he would be more fiscally responsible than Obama, or ANY democrat for that matter.
October 17th, 2007 at 7:02 amI just think it’s funny that Obama’s campaign would use Kennedy as an example.
Obama couldn’t hold Sammy’s jock strap. As to Ronald Reagan, Obama is closer to Ron Reagan Jr.
