Nine Day Battle For Control Of One Street In Baquba
Diala, Oct 21, (VOI) – Iraqi security forces managed to bring a main street in northern Baaquba under control after nine days of clashes with al-Qaeda militants, which left severe casualties on both sides, a local official source said on Sunday.
“Security forces imposed their control over the main street linking northern Baaquba’s al-Salam district to al-Mansouriya district in the northeast of the city,” the source, who requested anonymity, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
“The street is now under police control after nine days of clashes between army and police personnel and allied tribesmen on the one hand and al-Qaeda fighters on the other,” the source added.
During the clashes, twenty two al-Qaeda members were killed and other 15 tribesmen, including the leader of al-Anbakiya tribe, Sheikh Abdul Latif Abdul Wahid Abdul Aziz, were reported killed or injured.
Meanwhile, unknown body was found in Baaquba’s district of al-Abbara with shots to the head, the same source indicated.
Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, is located 57 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
Looks like the US will soon be on overwatch as the Iraqis are taking over a lot of the fighting for themselves.
October 21st, 2007 at 4:50 pmI’d say al-Qaeda is losing in Iraq.
October 21st, 2007 at 5:44 pmWe’ll see were it goes from here…I know it had a nasty little pocket of gangland rule
October 21st, 2007 at 9:09 pmI left out a special “kudos” for those guys ..I’ve been keeping up with Baquba since sept.
October 21st, 2007 at 9:38 pmAbout 3 mo. ago, Yon filed a couple of fascinating Dispatches about a food convoy to Baqubah, just after Arrowhead Ripper had ripped AQ out of the city. At the tail of Part II, he reports the comment of one of the Shia ‘crats who had fought tooth and nail to block the convoy: “I recalled one of the bureaucrat’s comments, upon hearing that al Qaeda had scattered like rabbits out of Baqubah. He seemed at first not to believe that news, but once he got confirmation, he made a point to tell us what that news actually meant: if al Qaeda was done in Baqubah, al Qaeda was done in Iraq.”
But I guess there were a few left that still needed convincing.
