Marine Snatches Hezbollah Flag, Follows Rush’s Example, Proceeds To Charity

A few days ago I talked about my snatching a Hezbollah flag from one of Hezbollah’s positions while I was in Lebanon. I also mentioned that I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with the flag.
Initially, the boy (and Marine) in me wanted to keep it as a trophy of war: maybe give it to my Navy midshipman nephew. Instead, I’ve decided to give up the flag – no, not back to the enemy – but I want to do something with it where it will do the most good … in a way in which it might benefit others who are far more deserving of it than I will ever be.
I’m going to auction it and give the money to a veterans charity.
I wish I could claim this idea as my own. But I can’t. The idea belongs to readers who have been independently suggesting this to me through countless e-mails over the past several days: Some readers have even compared their idea to Rush Limbaugh’s auctioning the letter sent from White Flag Harry Reid and gang to Clear Channel (demanding Rush’s apology for an alleged — though utterly untrue — slam against American soldiers).
The Rush letter netted a cool $2,100,100 on ebay, and Rush graciously matched the bid for a total $4.2 mil. That money is now going to benefit the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation. I’ve got a few veterans charities in mind already.
Of course, this flag will never generate that kind of cash, and I won’t be able to match the final bid. But I am excited about this. I’m a bit ashamed that I didn’t think of it first. And I’m grateful for the fantastic reader suggestions.
