Boom, Boom, Out Go The Lights?
Y-Net:
Despite a decision by Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Thursday to cut electricity to the Gaza Strip in response to Kassam attacks, no such action was taken after five rockets fired from Gaza landed Friday evening in open fields south of Ashkelon and near Sderot. No one was wounded in the attack.
No injuries were reported in the attack, but a factory in Sderot’s industrial zone sustained a direct hit..
The Islamic Jihad’s al-Quds Brigades claimed responsibility for the latest Qassam barrage.
Earlier Friday, the Islamic Jihad held a rally in Gaza in order to mark the 12th anniversary of former group leader Fathi Shaqaqi. Islamic Jihad members said latest Qassam barrage was meant to mark the anniversary, and also to express the group’s protest over the death of a Palestinian prisoner in an Israeli jail earlier this week.
The rockets were fired a short time after Friday’s meeting between Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas ended. Among other issues, the two leaders discussed Israel’s decision to cut off Gaza’s power supply in response to Qassam attacks. During the meeting, Abbas said he opposes all the punitive measures planned by Israel in Gaza.
Prime Minister Olmert stressed that Israel had the right for self-defense and is obligated to protect its citizens. However, the PM said Israel will not be cutting off the power to strategic and humanitarian facilities in Gaza, such as hospitals.
Earlier Friday, a missile fired by an IAF aircraft killed a Hamas operative and seriously wounded another during an IDF operation in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian officials said.
Hamas said the gunmen were attacked from the air near Gaza City.
The army said the gunmen were approaching IDF troops operating near the Gaza-Israel border when the aircraft opened fire.
I’m disappointed.
