Basra, Oct 1, (VOI) - The chief of the Basra police department survived an assassination attempt when his motorcade came under bombing attack on Monday afternoon in northern Basra, a police source said.

“An explosive charge went off targeting the motorcade of General Abdul Jaleel Khalaf, the chief of the Basra police department, in Jibiela region in northern Basra, without causing injuring him” the source told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) under the condition of anonymity.

“The blast damaged some nearby stores,” he added.

The general assumed his post in mid June, succeeding General Mohammad Hamadi al-Mousawi. He is also a member of the security committee, headed by the chief of the Basra operations.

Basra is 590 km south of Baghdad.
