Radar:

Last June, the New York Times proclaimed that attitudes toward cocaine were evolving: “You could go into a swanky party in New York and do a line and nobody would notice.” But is the city that never sleeps really that blasé about blow? To find out, we dispatched reporter Neel Shah—clad in his finest Club Monaco getup—to places swank (Graydon Carter’s Waverly Inn) and pedestrian (Starbucks), armed with a baggie of confectioners’ sugar and our lawyer’s phone number.

Here’s what happened:

AFTERNOON DELIGHT The Midtown Starbucks crowd was nonplussed by the sight of a public blow-down

Scene: 3:15 p.m. A steady flow of corporate types in search of an afternoon pick-me-up.

PASS THE SUGAR Refueling at the milk station

Reaction: Baristas and patrons stare as I stand on line and snort away; shockingly, nobody says a word. I joke to a dandyish white male in his early thirties that at these prices he’s better off doing blow than buying $4 grande café lattes. He laughs. I follow him to the milk station, where I offer him a plastic baggie. He says he’d love to indulge, but he’s scheduled to deliver a presentation at his ad agency in 20 minutes.

SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE? Yes.

Makes me fearful and distrusting of the world I will someday release my daughter into…a striking example of how an entire generation has been subdued by a “tolerant” liberal mindset and forced to withhold judgment and accept what until only recently was abhorrent behavior.

Btw–f-ing hilarious photos. Pat, I suggest you have someone follow Neel around with a discreet camera rolling…that would be some funny shit, and a great vid to post…

Yeah i gotta say these photos are hilarious. And being my age I know its socially acceptable, in alot more places than New York City though. I mean hell for a while i didnt know many people who wasnt hooked on something. sad stuff. Glad i stayed away from it, just a beer drinker

New Yorkers love to talk about how tough they are.

They can’t even say a word to him?

YOU MODERN DAY NEW YORKERS LIVING IN NEW YORK ARE HUGE, LIBERAL VAGINAS DRIPPING WITH SELF-LOATHING AND FEAR. FEAR OF WHAT? WELL, I GUESS YOU HAVE TO BE ‘TOLERANT’ IN NEW YORK ABOUT COKE USERS.

THERE ARE NO MEN LEFT IN NEW YORK, ONLY FEMALE’S AND ‘MANGINA’S’ RUNNING AROUND SPOUTING COMMUNISM.

    WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

  6. just posting

if i saw this guy doing lines i wouldnt care, i think nobody should ever use that shit and it should always be illegal but i would just ignore em. IF there were any kids around then its a whole different story and he deserves to get his ass kicked

A further indication that the War On Drugs lacks any meaningful form of support from the citizens of this nation. Police forces are incapable of preventing substance use and abuse and without a radical swing of the public mindset this will not change.

My suggestion to those of you that see this as a problem: Give up. You have lost, the drug users, dealers, and manufacturers have beaten you and your government.

Hella Funny Shit. Also very true, coke use has become so sociably acceptable these days which goes to show that no matter what the gov does it shows its not workin. I am a proud occasinal user of coke, and I can’t condone someone for tryin to have a good time, whatever flots ur boat I say. Some people like myself just dont like to drink, so on a friday night, when im out, to unwind, i will do lines instead of drink beers or do shoots. Anyone who thinks that myself or others like me are in the wrong need to get a clue and wake up and stop being hypocrites because they are also messing around with a mind altering substance, but theirs happends to be legal, and ours doesnt. More power to people who arent ashamed and do their own thang! JUSt make sure to not start getting high that often, cuz then u’ll get a habit, just keep it to weekends. Thanx, and I LOVE PAT DOLLARD !!!
