U.S. Bribing Turkey With Ships?
Danger Room:
by Noah Shachtman
How badly does the U.S. want to keep Turkey from invading Iraq? Headline Junky counts the ways…
First he finds Rep Tom Lantos — one of the men behind the Istanbul-enraging Armenian genocide resolution — sponsoring a bill to give the Turks three decommissioned guided missile frigates worth a total of $375 million free of charge, as well as a fourth one at a $100 million dollar discount. That’s right, $500 million worth of naval hardware for the bargain price of $28 million.

bullshit
October 24th, 2007 at 6:30 pmHey, well if this keeps Turkey from doing something stupid then go for it. We don’t have horrible relations with Turkey so this is a pretty nice gesture. Also, it’s not like we have to include weapons, guidances systems, or any other fancy gadgets. We just have to give them a ship that can move through the water.
October 24th, 2007 at 6:40 pmThis wouldn’t be the first time a deal like this has occurred; besides someone has to undue the damage done by the dems.
October 24th, 2007 at 6:47 pmIt feels wrong going against our only real allies in Iraq. Even if the Turkish Kurds are more irrational and bloody minded that their Iraqi bretheren, the Turks are hardly our friends. Of course, we’ve been throwing Israel under the bus for years.
October 24th, 2007 at 8:17 pmTheir is a power struggle going on. Iraq is being pressured from Iran and Syria, and getting no support from saudi, turkey etc (other than supporting our mission) so the more help our boys can get the better, whats a few ships to stop chaos from breaking out in upper iraq
