Villagers Battle Scores Of Al Qaeda In Baaquba
Baaquba, Nov 8, (VOI)- Two al-Qaeda members were killed and one of the people’s committees (government-backed-tribesmen) was injured in clashes that flared up on Thursday morning between the two sides in the city of Baaquba, an official source from the people’s committees said.
“Fierce clashes erupted today between scores of al-Qaeda gunmen and elements of the people’s committees in Kanaan district, during which two gunmen were killed and one was injured from the people’s committees,” Haydar al-Karkhi told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
“The attack, which see the use of different kinds of light arms, started from al-Shalalat village towards Baaquba,” he explained.
The district is a hot spot for armed confrontations between al-Qaeda gunmen and elements of the people’s committees.
The people’s committees are armed Sunni militias comprising the 1920 Revolution Brigades, the Iraqi Hamas and Salah al-Din groups that turned against al-Qaeda and are fighting it in Diala with encouragement and support from the U.S. forces and the Iraqi government.
Diala, after the fall of the former regime, has witnessed the formation of several tribal organizations such as the Diala Support Office, Diala Rescue Council, Diala Hands Grouping, and Peace Support Council.
Baaquba, the capital city of Diala province, lies 57 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
Looks like Al Qaeda is having an easy time settling anywhere they want.
