By the way posters that SS officer is Joachim Peiper. He was an outstanding officer in the Leibstandarte Adolph Hitler division.
He fought in France, Kharkov, Kursk and in Battle of the Bulge. His men were very loyal. The Malmedy incident was a low mark for his command. No doubt. But remember the brutality on the Eastern front was beyond words. He witnesses many many atrocities committed against his men. Also, the US Amry had orders to shoot EVERY memeber of the Waffen SS. No prisoners. But let’s listen to Peiper himself.
Peiper- “I recognize that after the battles of Normandy my unit was composed mainly of young, fanatical soldiers. A good deal of them had lost their parents, their sisters and brothers during the bombings. They have seen for themselves in Koln thousands of mangled corpses after a terror raid had passed. Their hatred for the enemy was such: I swear it and could not always keep it under control.”
Peiper- “My men are the products of total war, grown up in the street of scattered towns without much education. The only thing they knew was to handle weapons for the Reich. They were young people with a hot heart and the desire to win or die right or wrong-my country.”
Peiper agreed to accept full blame and be shot if his men could go free.
Lest we forget this site is dedicted to the same young men of Americas elite unit. Are they not accused of “war crimes” in Iraq? I would never presume to know what they and Peiper went thru so I am not going to judge. Nuremberg is what is haunting the Marines in Iraq. Based on the same principle. History is one big circle.

I appreciate your comment. While making the video, I came across the account and testimony concerning the Malmady incident. Very interesting reading. Seems I recall Patton advocating doing the very thing after VE day - on to Russia! Would have saved us all a lot of trouble wouldn’t it?
In this song, “Klinton Brown” was PFC Clennie E. Brown, a relative who served in Third Army. He made it up to April 12, 1945. It was artistic license that put ‘the eagle’ on his sleeve. Oh well, I’m a songwriter, not a historian.
I’m all for “let bygones be bygones”. I’m sure that one day, if I live long enough,I’ll not be mad at certain middle eastern people. All they gotta do is stop trying to butcher my kids!

My two uncles were Tech Seargants in 2 different armoured divisions. I have to call my cousin to get which ones. I do know that Uncle Paul fought in Sicily, Italy France and Germany. Uncle Harry in Italy France and Germany.
They fought against the Waffen SS in the Battle of the Bulge. They respected them greatly. I have 5 German Medals incl Iron Cross and Russian front medal from Uncle Paul. I also have a Reich battle flag form the SS Leibstandarte Adolph Hitler division. My uncle Harry had a Leather Waffen SS motorcycle jacket a mint condition Lugar Bayonets armbands all sorts of stuff.
I never did get Harry’s collection. Sadly it was stolen from his home in the late 1980’s after he had died. It breaks my heart to think some jungle monkey took possesion of that collection.
My uncles were tough bastards just like these men in this video.
I used to go and hang out in the 1980’s and listen to their stories. I miss them.
My dad was Pacific Theatre Navy.
They all have past. My dad most recently end of Sept. I just came back from Arlington. My dad was laid to rest on Monday. Very emotional time for me right now.

A couple of years ago I had the great honor and privilege of visiting The American Military Cemetery at Margraten in the south of The Netherlands close to Belgium. Your video completed my voyage and brought back the special feelings I had when I was there. It was only at the strong suggestion of a Dutch women, who offered me a lift into town after golfing. She made a special stop so I could witness these sacred grounds which made it possible for me to go! She said it was her duty to show how thankful the people of South Limburg are for the sacrifice the American people made for her relatives and friends. I strongly believe that when I hit my ball out of the sand trap of the future Baghdad Country Club I will be able to as Yogi says “experience deja vue all over again” when I visit the graves of our fallen heros of the Liberation of Iraq War! Heck I know they have a golf course Afghanistan already!

At the same time, his statement did remind me of Patton getting his nuts in a wringer over his saying pretty much the same thing AFTER VE Day - or have I got my history wrong? I recall the first time I heard the story, I thought if he had gone on to Moscow, it would have saved me a lot of barked shins diving under my school desk during those fucking “duck and cover” drills.

Absolutely beautiful. In the last six years I have been blessed to have become mildly acquainted with a couple of the Band of Brothers, 101st AB, 506th Easy Company suvivors. I recognize a couple of them in your montage.
I was feeling a bit blue as we enter into the Holiday season (and winter in the NE) this year … All the overload that comes along with the hustle and hubbub … Being reminded of the real spirit of what Christmas is meant to be cannot be any more clear than to understand what these men went through, and what they helped get each other survive through that Hellish cold winter in Bastogne.

Wrong again. EVERYBODY was a lib in 1964. Both parties were only divided by party affiliation and their views on race.
Those Democratic biggoted segregationists were the ones who held up the civil rights laws…one of whom was your boy Robert Byrd.
And no. In the south in the 60’s southerners belonged to the Democratic Party not the Republican party. And that fact can be traced back to Lincoln and the post-civil war years.
It was the Blue Dog Democrats minus Byrd that changed party affiliation in the 60’s.
Southern Democrats made the change to the Republican party in the late 60’s and 70’s after they concluded that the Democrats were no longer the party of Roosevelt and Kennedy.
That change had NOTHING to do with segregation or race.
It was the Republicans that carried the day not the Democratic segregationists. Try reading less Zinn and more Woods.

We celebrate our beloved Marine Corps and the memory and sacrifice of all who served. Freedom isn’t free and without the sacrifices of these fine people, this country would not exist.
The brotherhood of arms remains an exclusive club. Born in sacrifice and tried in blood and adversity, the clarion call to serve, continues to go out..and be answered by yet another great generation of people.

That was a wonderful tribute. My husband served with 101st for 5 years, 2 of that with the Rakkasans. We were there when Band of Brothers premiered at Fort Campbell and I was fortunate enough to meet Maj. Winters and other honorable veterans at then COL Frank Wiercinski’s house. But, because of my historical ignorance, for which I will never forgive myself, I had no idea what a group of living legends I was in the midst of. They were all so remarkably humble and kind.
I now have a 7 year old son who can recite Eisenhower’s Letter to the Allied Troops word for word. It is through him and his own band of brothers that I hope the lessons of history and the sacrifices of great men before them, and generations yet to come, are never lost. Thank you for the video,and yet another reason to remember how thankful we all should be at this time of year for all we’ve been given, by the grace of God and the sacrifice of our soldiers.

Nice try at utter bullshit! You claim republicans are racists without citing the actual ideological differences currently between the partys. Socialism and state endorsed co-dependency vs Individual responsibly and real liberty. Democrats like to tell minorities that all their problems are not solvable by themselves and the need the government to feed and protect them. Here’s a little fact for you. Nazi’s were Socialists. Nazi’s had the master race. Power in collectivism where the lone individual is worthless compared to the needs of the master race, state, or the collective population as a whole. Hmm, weren’t most K.K.K members all Democrats. Democrats are Socialists now despite what they were 50 years ago. Socialists are the most racist types I know because the teach others to use race as a crutch. Conservatives prefer to teach the man to be individually responsible and prefer to follow the constitution and the Bill of Rights. You know, the documents the was supposed to limit government and protect the individual against the masses.

That’s why these guys served, fought, and so many died and are still serving, fighting and dieing. But, you know that. I know that. But many people - too many people, enjoy the fruits of their pains, and couldn’t give half a rats ass how they got these freedoms such as clicking and expounding wisdoms here at Pats Place.
As for me, I’m mightly ashamed of far, far too big a portion of my generation, the children of “The Greatest.”
The generation that serves now? A huge chunk of this present batch of ‘kids’ deserve a “________Generation” after their mention. I wonder what it should be?
And again, speaking for myself, I didn’t serve. There is NOTHING I regret more.

But, if you’re not conservative by the time you’re thirty, it’s because you have no brain.

Adolescent liberalism should be fully tempered from experience, etc. by the age of thirty. Many individuals who lack these life experiences end up teaching at a liberal arts college (a jab at my sister
) or a contributing member of the greater welfare state. Most fail to realize that problems cannot be solved just by throwing money at them, that people are actually resonsible for their actions, they should support themselves, that life is not always fair and cannot be legislated so, that you earn respect, it can’t be given, etc. The list could go on and on……..
