Eventually, I learned the joys of killing. But I’m skipping ahead of myself. I landed in Iraq in November 2004 armed with a video camera instead of a weapon...

It does seem unlikely that any Russian suitcase nukes made more than a decade or longer ago would still be functional. However, knowing how corruptible people can be with the right amount of money, it would not be surprising if UBL found some people in the old KGB willing to help him do whatever he needed to accomplish his evil designs, even with old weapons. I've read reports that those old suitcase nukes were left behind in the US in their secret locations after the Soviet Union dissolved. So, anything is possible, I think.

Speaking of "benign sources". This happened here in Philadelphia a few years ago. There's this six track wide underground train station in Center City, what we call downtown. The tracks are a little more than two levels below street level. My brother was standing on the platform and like everyone else just reading the newspaper waiting for the train. Out of nowhere this SWAT team appeared. The team looked like they were looking for something. In a couple of minutes they found it. An x-ray technician that worked in a Center City hospital with one of those radiation badges had set off the silent alarm. "OK, folks, never mind". The SWAT team disappeared as quickly as they had appeared. A little overly sensitive the detector was, but, I don't think anyone minded.

But if they actually exist wouldn't the lack of necessary maintenance have rendered them completely ineffective? The electronics and explosive material would be completely corrupted. So you'd have 22 pounds of highly toxic material that is no longer in a position to go boom.

Yeah, sorry to say, an old suitcase would be a perfect dirty bomb. It doesn't have to explode--just leak radiation. Doesn't really matter if it's a suitcase or car-sized. Leaks radiation, kills people. Very dangerous, and we should keep our guard up.

The biggest threat in my view, is more likely a scenario involving a dirty nuke, detonated in a confined area such as a subway, that would kill a large amount of people and contaminate the area with fissile material. That or a chem-bio attack such as the one that was used in the Japanese subway bombing a few years back.
