“Ruler” Of Al Qaeda In Diyala Captured
Diala, Nov 10, (VOI) – Joint Iraqi-U.S. forces on Saturday arrested the so-called wali (ruler) of Diala in the militant group Islamic State of Iraq along with four aides south of Baaquba, a security source in Diala said.
“The joint force, composed of the Iraqi army, police and popular committees and backed by the Multi-National Force (MNF), arrested Abu Shibl and four of his aides in a military operation in the area of Bazayez Bahrez, (5 km south of Baaquba),” the source, who refused to have his name mentioned, told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI).
The popular committees inside Diala are armed factions that joined hands with the Iraqi and U.S. forces in the war on al-Qaeda Organization in Iraq. Comprising the Thwrat al-Ishreen (the 1920 Revolution), Iraqi Hamas and Salah al-Din Brigades, the committees participated in military operations launched in the province on June 19, 2007.
Baaquba, the capital of Diala, lies 57 km north of Baghdad.
