Baghdad, Nov 24, (VOI) – Iraqi security forces killed eight gunmen and arrested 14 suspected and wanted persons in Baghdad’s al-Karkh and al-Rasafa areas within the Baghdad security plan Operation Fardh al-Qanoon during the past 48 hours, the plan’s official spokesman said on Saturday.

“Iraqi security forces managed to liberate a hostage, seize a vehicle in the western Baghdad area of al-Kadhemiya and arrest five suspects with two tankers used to steal fuel in their possession,” Qassem Atta told the independent news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) by telephone.

“One of the wanted persons was arrested with 51 books inciting sectarian violence in his possession in al-Aadhamiya, also in western Baghdad,” said Atta.

In the district of al-Mahmoudiya, southern Baghdad, the security forces killed eight gunmen, arrested four wanted persons and seized an arms cache while four wanted people were arrested and another weapons cache seized in the northern Baghdad suburb of al-Taji, he said.

Atta said “one officer and three soldiers were killed and 11 others wounded during one of the combat missions.”

The Iraqi government is carrying out a wide-scale security campaign codenamed Fardh al-Qanoon, or law imposing, since mid-February 2007 in a bid to clean Baghdad and its environs of any gunmen.
