Our government cannot do the ONE thing that it is constitutionally bound to do, and that is to protect its citizens from those who want to hurt us. It can tax the hell out of us and use our money for all kinds of programs, it can send our money all around the world, but it cannot put up a f’ing fence, even when its own citizens are begging for them to do so. I become so enraged by this. Seal the f’ing borders NOW!

I’m sure a lot of readers here know about a lot of things rumbling there.

The entire border is relatively unsecured, there are illegal people, drugs, and weapons crossing the border every day. There have been reported and documented cross-border attacks. You would think that after Sep 11th we would have moved immediately to secure the border. The weapons, illegal aliens, and drugs have been no secret. With all the Global War on Terror funds, you would think they would seal this critical vulnerability – but no. So many people, and companies, are getting fat off of the GWOT money and someone needs to put a critical focus on securing the ENTIRE border – for the drugs, for the weapons, and even the mere threat that ANY terrorist would enter our country undocumented. There have been verified reports of Arab speaking men along the border. Drug runners and aliens slip through all the time and even if a few jihadis get through, the costs could be deadly – and I consider the loss of a single American a horrific tragedy. If we had enough border protection, across the entire border, we would not have the drug, weapons, and alien problem. Ask a border agent, or a park ranger – there are not enough people on the job, and they most certainly do not get paid the money they deserve. I can personally verify, as a witness, that people are slipping through – with the occasional armed escort.

You are right, the sky is indeed not falling, and there are no hordes of Islamo-fascists waiting to invade, however, it did not take a horde to take down the towers. There is a need to come kicking and screaming, because after decades of drug smuggling and illegal immigration, and more appalling - after the terrorists attacks and the subsequent attempts, we have not effectively stopped it. Think about all the taxes we pay, and all the money floating around – and we can’t put up a simple fence. Disappointing doesn’t even come close. We shouldn’t have to rely on armed civilians to protect our borders; that means our government has failed, both Dems and Reps. It is what it is.

Precisely what would be the best course of action? We can’t just build a wall and leave it unmanned. Actually locking down the border nice and tight would take 100Ks of men, wouldn’t it? It would be easier if we did a DMZ of sorts, nothing gets across, period, but we still have to leave the border open to trade.

What’d we do?

I am in Texas and this issue is VERY frustating for me and just downright frightening for the country. What are we supposed to do? We MUST stand up and hold our government accountable. I am particularly angry with the Republican double talk on this issue. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison says she supports border security, but she issued amendment 3176, which in subparagraph D essentially allows the Border Fence that was put into law last year to be built OR NOT - This amendement leaves it up to Homeland Security - Chertoff Jerkoff - that is why the fence is not being built. I have written her repeatedly and her form letter response indicates that “it is important that our local officials have input in the location of the fence along the Texas border” . . . those people including government officials who are taking the kick-backs and payoffs from the drug cartels and the human smugglers, and those making getting rich from the cheap labor. It is infuriating. The Republicans are playing with “We The People” - they are playing with our heads — Saying what we want to hear and pulling sneaky little strings behind our backs. And Kay Bailey Hutchison wants to come back to Texas and be governor - over my dead body.

I am so tired of the apathy and the excuses and the claims that the border can not possibly be secured! Lock the darn thing down - North and South - screw the trade and screw the whiners. I am tired of being played for a fool.

Iggy - Also, thank you for your service to our country. I enjoy your posts and your videos. I take this report about the presumed attack on Fort Huachuca VERY SERIOUSLY. It could just as well be happening at Fort Hood because I know for a fact that non-Americans are working on site at Fort Hood . . . as sheetrockers.

Take things with a grain of salt, is all I’m saying.

We don’t need 100k guys on the border at a time. We need to use the Israel model for securing the borders. Also, secure does not mean “completely sealed”. We have border checkpoints that regulate travel and trade – that is easy. In between we have a 20 foot “smart fence” that has sensors all over it; don’t forget barbed wire, etc. It may be better to double it up the fence, create a “pocket”. Either way, once the sensors go off, send in a UAV, helicopter, and a patrol team to get these guys. There is no way they could get away. We have all the technology in the world to make this ultra-effective and not require extensive manpower. Absolute worse case scenario, buy up border property, post the requisite warning signs, and teach your kids to shoot.

Big picture, we can do this. It is not outside of reason, it is just outside of our political willpower and commitment.

I think both political parties better start taking more of us seriously about the issue. In many of the conversations I have had with people who are “anti-war”, and do not support our military in Iraq, are people who do not take the GWOT seriously because they do not see how we could possibly leave our border open if we really believed the terrorist risks were so high. I think it is safe to say that most of us who read and comment here want the border sealed and know that the GWOT is very serious. I think if the doubters, the other 48% or whatever it is now, were to see the border finally sealed they would have one less talking point and they would know that the threat to our country, our freedoms, and way of life are in danger.
