Al Qaeda Claims Credit For Killing Five Anbar Sheiks
Baghdad, Nov 16, (VOI)- The al-Qaeda’s Islamic State of Iraq armed group on Friday claimed responsibility for the last week suicide attack that killed five tribal chiefs from the Diala awakening council.
“A suicide bomber of what is called Abu Omar al-Kurdi brigade of the Islamic State of Iraq armed group blew up an explosive belt strapped to his body last Friday amid a gathering of senior leaders of the awakening council in al-Dougma region, north of Baghdad,” the group said in a statement published in its website.
“The operation killed the council’s deputy chairman as well as four other leaders,” the statement also said.
Iraqi police had said last week that a suicide bomber blew up himself amid a local meeting of a number of Sunni tribal chiefs from the awakening council in al-Dougma village in Khalis, killing five of them and injuring three more.
The police noted that among the dead men was the deputy chairman Faez Lafta al-Ubeidi.
Khalis is 15 km north of Baaquba, the capital of Diala, which lies 57 km northeast of Baghdad.
