Re: Official Response to a recent advertisement for the movie
“Obsession”
Throughout our country, we have witnessed a rise in offensive behavior and actions taken against others, which has created greater divisiveness and misunderstandings among the various ethnic groups residing in our communities. One of these events occurred on our campus recently with the promotion of an event.
Advertisements for the movie “Obsession” sponsored by several student organizations appeared during the past several weeks on campus bulletin boards and they illustrate the importance of balancing freedom of speech with responsibility.
The ads, which promoted a showing of the movie on Nov. 13 and a panel discussion afterward, entitled “Radical Islam Wants You Dead,” offended many Muslim students on campus. Regardless of its original intent, the language reinforced a negative stereotype, created unnecessary divisiveness and contributed to a generalization that only furthers the misunderstanding of the religion of Islam.
We cannot speak of rights without also addressing the responsibility associated with our actions or statements, including understanding the potential consequences. One of our roles as a learning institution is to teach our students to express themselves freely, and also in a fair and conscientious manner. In an academic setting, differences of opinions are strongly encouraged, yet such opinions must be based on accurate information when describing other members of the community.
Unfortunately, in the case of the “Obsession” ads, that did not happen. I believe the groups that posted them owe the campus, and particularly campus members of the Islamic faith, an apology and a clarification.
At the University of Florida we have embraced a set of values, one of which is diversity. Diversity is not just about having representation from various cultures on campus, it also is having each member contribute to an inclusive and safe environment and collectively enhancing our understanding and appreciation of the richness brought by such differences. The University of Florida is committed to being an institution of excellence, where all members are valued and feel safe on our campus. Our role as an institution is to create opportunities for students to learn in an open and accepting environment; one that emphasizes respect for all. Let’s remember that part of our mission is to prepare each other to be effective members of a global community. With that in mind, I encourage each member of our campus community as a start to learn more about the religion of Islam and some of its tenets of peace, hard work, charity and compassion.
There is little room for divisiveness in our world if we are to find peace and understanding among us. We all can win if we focus on greater inclusion and understanding as well as the delicate balance between our rights and responsibilities.
Leftist students gush at The Radikal
Pathetic.

November 28th, 2007 at 1:16 amI wonder what her responses would be to anti-Christian events…

I wonder if such criteria would be applied to a movie like redacted?
anyways, of course she doesnt elucidate for us exactly what in the movie is inaccurate, afterall the headline said Radical islam, not Islam wants you dead. perhaps the muslims were offended that moderate muslims werent included in the list?
Liberals are like this they NEVER go into details about islam, but they are so quick to quote the bible or look at christian history to engage the public in moral relativism.
Ignorance is bliss. Liberals no NOTHING about islam except what muslims tell them. If they are good muslims they practice religious deception(taqiyya) in order to “guard themselves” against Us and the useful idiots like this woman.
I have a brother who is a highly intelligent engineer making millions in LA, yet when political discussions broach the subject of Islam, the debate is cut short and his lack of understanding of even the rudimentary concepts of Islam become glaringly obvious and he does as this woman does and talks of multi culturalism and tolerance etc while engaging in the same moral relativism comparing past abuses by christians to the “few fringe elements of Islam”.
Attention Liberals: if you really want to understand and respect all people , then you need to remedy the gross deficiency of knowledge you have with regards to Islam.
November 28th, 2007 at 6:21 amWhat an intollerant fuck. What’s the matter bitch? Are your arguments so weak that you have to diss others for theirs?
She’s no Gator all right. Marx and Lennin, Chavez or Stinky Ahmedinajacket would like her. Useful idiots are always wecome in their facist countries.
November 28th, 2007 at 7:15 amin their rush to cry wolf at the slightest perceived pc offense the liberal mind sees/hears what they want to see/hear to fit their agenda of all conservatives are just plain bad.
i would expect someone who has risen to the level of university president to have basic comprehension skills but obviously the desire to meld things into her narrow mindset outweighs reason. if the event was titled “islam wants you dead” i would agree with her letter to the students because it would paint everyone who practices islam as a terrorist which isn’t the case as there are many different sub groups of the religion that don’t preach this kind of hatred. however, the event was titled “radical islam wants you dead”. anyone who argues with this fact obviously needs to wake up and smell the coffee. all they need to do is look at all the bombings staged by radical islam practitioners and their comments about death to people who do not practice the same form of religion belief as they do.
i hope the response to this letter by the event organizers would simply highlight that they didn’t call out all of islam but radical islam (maybe they should write it RADICAL so the feeble minds could pick it out and make the distinction) and then go on to list all of the bombings/atrocities/fatwas/speeches that show RADICAL islam does want all non believers dead. i know i am crazy to think it but maybe if it is highlighted in these really simple terms that they could understand it. however, i’m not holding my breath for that to happen…..
November 28th, 2007 at 7:26 amJust because you are an inhabitant of the ivory tower, etherial world of academia (albeit in this case a member of the academic bureaucracy) does not mean you have even a modicum of real-world intelligence or common sense. You see this so often in the higher ed miasma it an is an axiomatic fact. This pc-spewing woman is a case in point. She, of course, would be one of the first to feel the blade if those who she wishes not to be recognized take power where she resides.
November 28th, 2007 at 8:33 amEven the stupidest among us could never have written that after viewing OBSESSION, “Who” is misinformed? “Who” is uneducated?
November 28th, 2007 at 9:27 am“Throughout our country, we have witnessed a rise in offensive behavior and actions taken against others, which has created greater divisiveness and misunderstandings among the various ethnic groups residing in our communities. ”

I am sooooo fucking sick of hearing dumb-asses say this shit.
I want fucking names, places, dates, and police documentation as proof of that g.d. “lie” of a statement. Why? because IF it were true, don’t you think the shitting MSM would be screaming and shouting about it 24/7 ?!?!?!!???
November 28th, 2007 at 9:46 am#1 The flier specified “RADICAL” Islam, not Islam as a whole. (although that’s not my personal opinion) So it would seem only radicals would be “offended”. Moderate Islam would go see the film and attend the discussion.
November 28th, 2007 at 10:45 am#2 There certainly is no shortage of both actions and quotes from Islamic “scholars” to support the accuracy of the title of the film.
#3 “Dr.” Patricia lends even more proof to the title’s accuracy through her clear willful blindness and expression of fear of radical Islam.
#4 Only in an institution of “higher” education can one find such oustanding displays of stupidity and hypocracy. Ship her off to Saudi.
I can only hope that the Radical Islamists come to her office first, and show her that they are indeed RADICAL and that they are the people who wish she were already dead, and they would like to be the ones to take care of that task. In this case, RADICAL means something other than peace loving and law abiding. It means the non-believers die. Obviously Ms. Telles-Irvin is not as bright as her scholarly position would lead one to believe she is. Or perhaps, she thinks they would like her because she is a woman.
November 28th, 2007 at 12:24 pmI wonder if she’d be upset about a flyer calling for an old fashioned book burning.
Wow, it’s another idiot espousing the ideals of RADICAL diversity. Notice the adjective which, apparently she can not.
