Russian FBI Narcs Poisoned-Putin’s Circle Split
Two officers in the Federal Anti-Narcotics service, Russia’s equivalent of the FBI, were fatally poisoned yesterday in what appeared to be the latest attack of an escalating civil war in the Kremlin.
Two Kremlin factions with close links to the former KGB have been in open conflict with each other for the past month.
Senior officers, including a powerful general, are being held in detention after the anti-narcotics service and the FSB, the KGB’s domestic successor, began to arrest each other’s agents.
Analysts say that the conflict broadly pits Viktor Cherkesov, the head of the anti-narcotics service and a close ally of Mr Putin, against Igor Sechin, a powerful hawk who serves as the president’s deputy chief of staff.
