December 1st & 2nd, 2007
This is a new feature. It’s going to suck - in technical ways, and hell, well, maybe others. I am not a good writer, not especially disciplined ( in general actually), and have a million different jobs to do, people to argue with, bribe and manipulate - and just don’t have the time and patience for formal blogging per se - the kind where you proof-read, checking for spelling, grammar, cogency, proper paragraph breaks, appropriate titles, etc., so what I’m going to do is just throw down whatever thoughts and musings come to mind, whatever unfolding tales of my life, uh, unfold, and just throw things out in a random sort of - to borrow a hackneyed phrase - stream of consciousness. It’ll also allow me to quickly toss out a living diary of my often bizarre and definitely tumultuous, conflict-riven life.
The day’s entries will begin at the top. I’ll try to put a timestamp next to each one. Once the day’s over, the slate will be clean for the next one’s. I can embed videos as well.
Thanks.
Pat Dollard
REMEMBER: SPELLING, PUNCTUATION, GRAMMAR, ETC. ARE OF A LITTLE CONCERN HERE, AS I HAVE TO MOVE FAST, GIVEN MY DAYS. YOU GET IT AS IT COMES.

2:21 Am:
Saw the remix of episode #3 by Tony Scott’s editor and sound guys. Some very good stuff , some very bad sturff. The piece needs to maintain the creative and personall integrity of what it is: a guy with no business going to the heart of darkness of the Iraq war, instead picks up a camcoder, embeds in worst of it, a defacto grunt, and records it all just as it infolds in front of his lens. No one but the Marines and I know what really what happened there, what the experience was like do endure and therefor what needs to be communicated to the world to not only educate, but entirel immerse them in the experience. In the interests of all I’ve just stated, the series must remain raw and uncompromising. And the last thing it needs is to be run through a slick Hollywood machine, laying out an experience merely interpretated by outsider, as opposed to one laid out by those of us who experienced it.
Tony and I had knock-down drag out fight on Thursday, which fortunately ended well. We are scheduled to have a long talk this weekend about the next steps in the editing process, and if the coversation goes well and we remain in business, I will begin to work side by side on Monday with Tony’s very talented editor, Skip Chaisson. Skip and I can make this something far better together than it can be made by Skip or on our own - - and hopefully they will grasp that, so we can move on, and not pursue other available avenues. More shortly…
Tidbit: After a very aggresive ( and unilaterall ) campaing by Tony Scott, Bob Dylan agreed to let us use “Like A Rolling Stone” as the series’ theme song. However, his lawyers later unravelled the deal, saying “YA” was too political. I would not have wanted that song, but it’s lyriics imply victimized troops dumped in Iraq and left running our of control around the place like “Rolling Stones”. Tony didn’t tell me he waw pursuing this until after the fact. He’d even cut a special deal for Dylan showing highlights of the series to Bob’s nasally soundtrack. When Tony finally did tell me, he saw my stone Marine glare, and got concerned. “You would have approved it, wouldn’t you, Pat?” “No.”
And on this point, who has what suggestion for a theme song over the opening and closing credits?
12:34 PM
Had Marine friends over last night, didn’t crash till about 7 AM. Just woke to see Bash hasn’t posted anything yet. I’m on it.
12:36 PM
Have a hell of a weekend ahead. Have to finish one and a half YA episodes, AND have to work on the “Pat Dollard Story” script for 20th Centrury Fox. Someone got drunk over there and decided it was a good idea to make a movie about my life so they bought the rights to my life story.
2:45 PM
The MSM “anti-Bush” therefor “ant-war” bias rages on. Once again I just had to edit an AP story that thrice repeated the phrase “mounting public opinion against the war”, when all polls and plain old common sense proves the opposite. It’s both wishful thinking for the “good old days when Americans were turning against the President”, and the very Orwellian tactic of actually creating a truth just by repeating it so often under the imprimatur of a “Respected News Organization”. Make no mistake, the AP has long worked as an enemy propagandist, and has contributed to the deaths of U.S. troops by strengthening enemy morale, and doing so purposefully, not as a byproduct of objective journalism.
3:17 P.M.
That’s my agent, the legendary Mike Simpson of the William Morris Agency, on the left. Mike was one of the key players in bringing the world greats like “Pulp Fiction”. Photo was taken the weekend before Thanksgiving. Never be represented by an agent who doesn’t own a gun and kill things . ( To be clear, Mike is a hunter who only kills what he eats. ) Standing next to him is one of my close personal friends and lifestyle mentors, the legendary Ernie Wolfe, called by many “A modern day Ernest Hemingway”. Article excerpt: “African art dealer Ernie Wolfe is a modern-day Ernest Hemingway. Renowned hunter and fisherman, he returns from the sea every so often with an enormous catch of lobsters, sea urchins, and ahi tuna. He cooks wild boar that he kills and hosts an eccentric group of artists, actors, and musicians for an incredible feast. Wolfe has introduced many well-known American artists such as Andy Warhol to his art which has in turn influenced theirs. According to dinner guest and music producer Don Was, “Ernie embodies the resistance to the feminization of men. There’s one guy left you can say “I know this guy that hunts his food and eats it.” He’s a real man. He puts his body chemistry to its natural use.”
5:23 PM
Hey, can’t any of you sit in front of your web camera for five minutes and slander someone or bitch about something for the Reader Video section. No need for fancy music, professionalism, whatever. Just get drunk and talk about something that you’d really like to say. Or do it sober, whatever.
You have to remember, Bashman is a home-bound parapalegic who won a multi-million dollar settlement against a French auto manufacturer, so he has the time to whip out the grandly produced Vlogs. You don’t have to worry about measuring up to standards like that. Just say something about anything or anyone- like Franchie, maybe.
8:00 PM
Just got back from the Circle K. My buddy behind the counter told me that at about 9 in the morning two guys walked in, buck-naked, and proceeded to shop just like normal people, acting like nothing was strange or amiss. It’s on the security tape and I’m trying to weasel a copy out of him. I didn’t ask if when it was time to pay one pulled a debit card out of his ass crack.
10:35 P.M. Anybody have any experience with High Standard’s .45 Crusader or compact .45 Crusader? Or heard any opinions?
December 2
1:11 A.M.
I’m keeping yesterday’s Deep Thoughts and comments up for now, cos it’s an important topic. About to crash. Was supposed to go shooting with a bunch of Marine buddies from Iraq who are here, but I’ve got a long call to have with Tony Scott about finishing the cut of the suicide bombing episode, and have to prepare some new footage for Monday in the editing room. Gonna be a busy day tomorrow. Interestingly, a member of the Lakers has just shown up with an offer to invest in the project. We’re looking for more money because the advance from Showtime barely covers our post-production expenses - mostly because the edit team isn’t used to working guerrilla style and are spending too much money. Another thing I have to clamp down. For all of you who think this TV business stuff leads automatically to a big pay-off, you are way off the mark. I’m not getting one thin fuckin’ dime off of the Showtime advance, and in fact have had to dump another 30K of my own money into the project over the last three months. There’s been a lot crazy stories about the whole YA process that I have to start telling everyone about in the posts to come.
Oh, by the way, anybody else out there who watches Fox and Friends regularly thinks Gretchen Carlson sucks and kind of ruins the show. She seems perfectly nice, but it’s like watching your friend’s mom on TV. Doocey and Not Doocey are great. Kieran was the shit - hot and very funny. It’s time to replace Gretchen with Ainsley Earhardt.
7:37 A.M.
I sit here depressed, as my buddies are heading out to the desert to shoot a lot of shit, and practice tactical manuevers in vehicles. Keep in mind that what once seemed the silly game-playing of survivalists, is a very practical thing for us to be doing, as all of us find ourselves in convoys and on operations in either Iraq or Afghanistan.
But I have to be here to have my phone meeting with Tony and finish my editing on “The Glass Factory”, episode #3 of YA.
And speaking of the Fox morning line-up, let’s talk about Megyn Kelly for a moment. All right, clearly she’s hot as shit, got a brain, got a sense of humor - no doubt, all the way, we all want to fuck her. And would consider taking her home to mom, cos she’s also a classy keeper. However, why does this bitch feel the absolute necessity TO SCREAM every single one of her reports. Watch her with Hemmer. They trade-off, he does a story, and then she does one. And when it’s hers, she just absolutely starts screaming the fucker. It’s like whoa, sweetie, that ain’t making either the story or you seem more interesting. And then, because she’s new to the whole game, she’s fighting for attention to make her mark. So she always interjects something into Hemmer’s stories, out of turn, talking over him. It’s her way of getting more attention for herself, to “establish” her personality. He’s very polite, and never jumps in on her shit. However, she jams right into is, like she assumes we’re all just dying to know “what Megyn thinks” about every point he brings up. Every morning I go from wanting to fuck her to wanting to punch her. I hate when that happens with a woman of otherwise nearly impeccable qualities.
Oh, keep in mind, since I run a breaking news website, it’s part of my job to watch these news shows daily, so the inevitable happens: I develop strong opinions about them.
9:18 A.M.
Is it just me, or does Romney seem to have just a little too much “civilian” in him to really lead this country in the war against Islamist Fascist Imperialism. I haven’t settled on a candidate yet, so all you pro-Romney people don’t need to think I’m about to start using the site as an anti-Romney vehicle. It’s just a notion that pops up in my head from time to time.
9:37 A.M.
So who’s working on their quickie reader VLOG right now?
Oh, and if any of you college students can tape, audio or video, one of your liberal professors going off on an extremely inappropriate rant, please git ‘er dun, and get us the goods. These are especially great if the class is unrelated to politics, like a biology teacher doing the BOOOOsh is Hitler thing.
6:57 P.M.
Word from Tony Scott’s assisstant, “Tony’s still reading your notes, will call tomorrow”. So the big call about where to go next has been pushed another day. Apparently Tony wasn’t too thrilled about our little blow-up the other night, but to me it wasn’t such a serious thing, more just that typical flow of an argument where someone says one thing that pisses someone off, and then it escalates.
Instead of calling me, he called and left a message with my agent, complaining I was dissing him, blah blah, basic butt-hurt shit. My agent reminded me to be a proper politician.
I’d like it to work with them, but this is not their story to tell. They did not live it, they did not shed blood, they did not comfort their dying friends, they did not pick up eyeballs and severed limbs after suicide bombings, they did not take the risks to tell the Marines’ story, they did not finance it. I am willing to work with them, and truly collaborate with them, but I’m also not interested in having shit shoved down my throat. It’s my way or the highway on this project, end of story.
WTF, euh, you got a few university professors on board that can beautifully improve your emotional and consciounessal expression
well, at least I expect they won’t lose/forget your spirit, cause it’s the identity of that place : some kind of unique universe
December 1st, 2007 at 5:57 amDrowning Pool’s “Bodies.” LOL It, however, may convey a more agressive initiative than you wish to project, but it’d be all balls.
December 1st, 2007 at 6:00 amYour trailer, with the song “Fuck You” was perfect. It’s what started all the buzz and it’s what made the MSM fearful of you. It was raw and undeniable. Don’t go with mainstream artists.
Also, David Mustaine is a big supporter of our troops. I’m sure he can help you out for a theme song. Listen to the album United Abominations. Stuck Mojo is also a good band that supports the troops. At least get an artists who back your work.
Fucking Dylan is from Vietnam. Iraq is not fucking Vietnam. I think you should be deeply involved with the editing process.
Don’t water this fucking thing down from what it really is. Show them all why they should be afraid of you Pat and Don’t doubt it for a moment.
December 1st, 2007 at 6:15 amGrowing up watching tour of duty as a child - this was mall all time favorite - It’s been used many times and even in current computer war games - PAINT IT BLACK

Just the way the music in beat is allows for randoms pictures to be flashed, chopper rides, fading from color to black and white..

I think my previous suggestiion, Paint it black, conjures up to many thoughts of Vietnam ( Lol but at the same time you could show our guys sipping tea and enjoying a meal with the local Iraqis, the kids playing with our guys - wow that might totally ruin that song for the lefties)

Some consider this to be an anti-government song. . . well, what better song for the times we are living in right now with all that is happening in Congress. With the politicians selling out our country by sending 1.4 billion to Mexico rather than spend that money on the US side to protect our borders (watch Glenn Beck re: Loredo County - will piss you off), Democrats yelling defeat and then having to “eat their words,” amnesty for illegal immigrants, the Sea Treaty, taking God out of the Pledge of Alligence, Prayer out of schools (except for muslims????), taking money from our soldiers and sending it to the friggin Phillipenes, etc. I think it’s time for us to take our government back and this song, to me, it telling everyone to wake up. Just my thoughts . . .

December 1st, 2007 at 7:28 amhttp://tinyurl.com/2lhbfj
I’m with Egfrow … “Iraq is not fucking Vietnam …”
Sorry, Karl B, I too like the TV series “Tour of Duty”, and the Stones “Paint It Black” … But it’s too `nam.
Too many opposing our military and war in Iraq have tried to twist this into Vietnam. Try to stay clear of that era of music.
Tony Scott picked some goodies for his flick “Domino” (although, as I understand it, the real Domino ~ RIP ~ had her hand in music selection to some degree) … Was a great song called Mutha Fukka, or some such, as I’m not “in-tune” with much of today’s music.
Most importantly to consider is WHAT ARE THE TROOPS/MARINES LISTENING TO during this war? What are THEY using as a “daily soundtrack” to their lives over there?
There was a young woman, country artist I believe, who in the last two years penned a pro-Marine song … and I am sorry her name escapes me … HELP YUNZ GUYS! … She expressed her pro-troop/Marine support feelings about people who made negative comments about her bumper stickers. Damn, I wish I could recall her name and her song. Was a hit.
And OH, SHIT, PAT!
Everyone recall, just a few months back, the “Bad Ass Marine” who did the rap?!?!!!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=vBflQLa75C8
Oh, yeah!!!! If there can be a hip song bed put behind his rap … hmmm?
December 1st, 2007 at 7:56 amHere … Somebody on youtube spliced this version … So, I imagine something even better (professional) can be done.

December 1st, 2007 at 8:00 amI’m sorry to keep posting, but my thoughts pop up …
LOL
Using the actual video of this Marine in an opening of Young Americans could hit ya like the opening speech of the “Patton” movie … Just laughing at the thought here …
December 1st, 2007 at 8:02 amOH YA OPEN SEASON BABY - And for some reason in my mind Pat and Stuck Mojo definitely fit!

OOPS ^ AMERICAN BY GOD’S AMAZING GRACE
December 1st, 2007 at 8:12 amKarl B
I hadn’t heard that song.
It’s a goodie!
December 1st, 2007 at 8:17 amstay the hell away from that 60’s anti establishment bullshit music, why the hell not use john lennon’s ‘imagine’ then? or that fucking song by country joe & the fish
to actually to offer to use something like that worries me that the people working on it with you do not get it
use some of that music the marines listen to, I yield the floor for the actual titles and suggestions, unless you want to use some of Johnny Cash’s new music
December 1st, 2007 at 8:45 amThe similarities between Vietnam and the GWOT are that back then there was the attempt to contain communism whenever and wherever we could. Today the GWOT the effort is to contain islamofacism whenever and wherever we can. Then there’s the democrats effort to get in the way of both efforts. But, if you trot out those tired old “hippie hit tunes” I’ll wretch. Besides I’m too old to listen to the old stuff, I heard them the first time. It used to drive me crazy when my father back then would say when hearing what we were listening to, “they don’t write music the way they used to”. Under my breath I would say, “Thank God”. Some classics, like Tchiakovsky and Beethoven might work in some places. Twelve and a half minutes into the “1812 Overture” for about two and a half minutes before all hell breaks, especially the one done by the Vienna Philharmonic might fit somewhere. Then if there’s anything from that era, fine, but, then, I would skip right over everything and stick to contemperary stuff. A college radio station might have some music people you might want to consult. Just my opinion.
December 1st, 2007 at 9:53 amGotta go with METALLICA!!!
“Don’t Tread On Me” is a good one.
Mabey Pantera
“Five Minutes Alone”, “Walk”, or “Fucking Hostile”.
What ever it is should deffinately by metal and agressive.
Music with a punch because Young Americans kick ass!
December 1st, 2007 at 9:57 amGo for it, Pat. This whole effort must keep you jazzed and wound up like a cheap watch; spin it off, and carry on! Wouldn’t do at all, at all, to have you get overwhelmed.

December 1st, 2007 at 10:32 amFranchie, yes, computer stuff. Lights and sound. Been listening to that also since the late 70s when the University of Pennsylvania’s radio station, WXPN, turned me on to that. Saw Tangerine Dream with lighting done by Laserium once in Philadelphia, 78 or 9, and once in Toronto, late 80s or early 90s, without. Penn’s radio station back then did that style of music every night. Now, they only do from 1am to 6am, eastern, Sundays. In fact, I make an effort to, since I have a tendency to doze at the drop of a hat, try to store up awake time, nap here, nap there, all day Saturday so I can be awake 0100 to 0600 Sunday. WXPN can be heard on line, XPN.org. Now, they are one of those college stations I was talking about earlier. The Y-100 segment of their programming would be a gold mine for what’s being listened to today.
December 1st, 2007 at 10:32 amMatt~ That is actually a great call
December 1st, 2007 at 10:33 amStuck Mojo seems good too, though.
December 1st, 2007 at 10:36 amBad Ass Marine is AWESOME you should get him in your Young Americans!!!
It is like a gift from heaven the same as our Warriors special souls sent from heaven to defend freedom.
December 1st, 2007 at 10:42 amJohn,
isn’t it funny for your age ?
well dunno if I am on the same waves though, I use to be interested in youngs musics stuffs when my son was still at home : he lead a “hard rock group for a while, we used to go to his performances ;
now as he is working in a serious Cie, he hasn’t time anymore for training, but he managed to get the computer stuff to create his compositions for shorts movies or music video-clips for differents styles from techno, rock, to rap musicians
December 1st, 2007 at 10:48 amHow about the sound of spent cartridges on concrete? THAT gets the point across, no lyrics ,no crap, just the sound of victory , hard won

December 1st, 2007 at 11:09 amVanessa, “bad ass” reminds me, didn’t Kid Rock do something called “American Bad Ass”?
Franchie, I don’t know, “for my age”. I was always lucky to have available to me a radio whenever I worked, and, I think there’s a part of me that get’s bored quickly. I think that the same creativity, innovativeness exists in every generation. After a while groups get old, like Grace Slick once said, “after a while you can’t help but sound like yourself”. So, being lucky enough to live in Philadelphia, Buffalo and close to Toronto I always had available to me what they were doing today. The old stuff will always be there, and when I do hear old stuff it’s kind of like hearing it “for the first time”. And, at our age we don’t get real first times anymore. Kind of like watching college football or NFL football.

December 1st, 2007 at 12:58 pmHey Pat, who ever decided on the music for the two videos you have done in the past few months should pick your theme song.
The two songs were “Down in the Park-Foo fighters” and “The Air That I Breathe-Hollies.”
The video sequences in those videos were so powerful with that music. Very hard hitting and exciting.
Here is the link to one of the videos:

December 1st, 2007 at 1:13 pmP.S. - I also have a playlist for our RHG - Cynthia! Her new vid is great:

and it is here on Pat’s site too. I didn’t mean to leave you out Cynthia.
December 1st, 2007 at 1:17 pmActually I would like to nominate Kid Rock’s “Lonely Road of Faith” from his album “Cocky” as a candidate for the theme song. “Only God Knows Why” is another good one from Kid Rock.
Or Toby Keith-”The Angry American”
“Lonely Road of Faith” is my personal choice. Kid Rock has done several concerts for our troops. I would think he would be proud to support YA.
I would.
I personally am coaching a Marine that just finished his second tour of Iraq at the end of 2006. He recently retired from the Marine Corps at 27. He believes in what we are doing also.
Can’t wait to see the finished YA. I know it will be really special! Thanks for risking your life to tell the story like no one else can.

December 1st, 2007 at 2:28 pmPat Dollard: “Corey - I have picked all the music for my vids.”
I figured as much Pat. This is your baby and I gotta tell you. You pick the theme song, because the two videos you have put music to that I have seen are spot on. NO ONE is going to care more about your movie than you. “Listen to many voices, but speak with your own.”-unknown
If it feels right Pat then do it. “When you trust in yourself, you are trusting in the same wisdom that created you.” - Wayne Dyer
With you picking the music Pat it will be awesome. Of that I am sure!
December 1st, 2007 at 2:37 pmDJ Khaled, “We’re Taking Over”. Though, it might be misinterpreted.
NIN, “We’re In This Together”.
December 1st, 2007 at 2:53 pmPat, as a young marine Iraq vet and someone who understands the pulse of my generation, please check out this song and take it into consideration:
March of the Mutes - Unearth
How can we close or eyes,
when the walls around wear thinner each day
How can we mute our voices,
when a parade of chaos marches through out the land
This is the end,end of all
We’ve been down this road before
yet we all just stand and watch
everlasting ignorance has led our ways
forewarned,but still forgotten-our history erased
This is the end of all
Chorus-
Down on our knees,
we bow to hatred
down on our knees
we fade away
We’ve tried and failed
now rome burns again
This time its all of us
this time its forever
Good luck with everything, wish you much success

“Crazy” - Seal
December 1st, 2007 at 6:19 pmI just came from their concert, so I’m gonna have to say “Going Under” by Evanescence for the opening. It’s fresh, only a couple years old, and I guarantee it’s listened to by quite a few troopers.
Ideally the credits would have the song used in Pat’s own video, with a lot of Stuck Mojo interspersed throughout.
December 1st, 2007 at 6:30 pmGoing Under
Now I will tell you what I’ve done for you
Fifty thousand tears I’ve cried
Screaming, deceiving, and bleeding for you
And you still won’t hear me…
Going under!
Don’t want your hand this time
I’ll save myself
Maybe I’ll wake up for once
Not tormented, daily defeated by you
Just when I thought I’d reached the bottom
… and so on… Great song. Powerful, rebellious, intense.
December 1st, 2007 at 7:53 pmYou gotta know what you’re trying to say before you pick the music. The music is what ties your narrative together, emotionally. It’s fucking important.
What’s the message of this series? What’s the story arc? Thematically what have you assembled?
Is it about heroism? Shocking reality? Anger at a sleeping society? I’ve watched all the vids you’ve got up, and I’ve been avidly enjoying the site for about five months, but I’ve gotta be honest when I say I don’t really know what Young American’s is about.
If you’re trying to shock and express anger, I think you had it covered exquisitely with Blood for Blood. If you’re trying to imply objectivity, or unframed reality, you could always go the ‘Cops’/Shield approach with no music. Heroism, camaraderie? Spielberg’s always nailed it with violin heavy instrumentals. Existentialism? Chaos and senselessness of war? Piano over a silent background is what you want. (yeah I’m a hack)
Personally, and I know this is just me being an absolute fuckwit, I always liked Bom Bom Bom by Living Things. I’ve got about a dozen good friends in uniform, and despite knowing that Living Things are a bunch of anti-war hippies and that song is overproduced/played pop trash, it somehow speaks to my feelings on the war. (not hippy feelings).
My gut tells me that if you wait to see what you’ve got, you’ll know exactly what you want. And also my gut is telling me to tell you to beware of some motherfucker trying to pick a piece for you, cause he might be trying to reframe the narrative and hijack your work.
December 1st, 2007 at 8:16 pmBlood For Blood works, just look at the trailer. But they’re from Boston, and are probably black bloc sympathizers at heart.
But I think “I Will Be Heard” or “A Call For Blood” by Hatebreed fits better. Plus I’ve never picked up a libtard vibe from Jamie Jasta, the lead singer, at least.
http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/hatebreed/perseverance.html#4
Failing that, Stuck Mojo or Dave Mustaine would probably love to sign on. Disturbed or Drowning Pool might work too. Drowning Pool has that song, “Soldiers”, that they performed in Iraq. Of course, this is a series about Marines, so I don’t think it quite fit.
December 1st, 2007 at 10:23 pmdrillanwr - thanks for the compliment!
December 2nd, 2007 at 12:47 amYou can use my group’s tune “Fishin’” “…I might catch one, I might catch two…..”
December 2nd, 2007 at 1:10 amOh and Pat, don’t let them rat fuck your film no matter what man!!
December 2nd, 2007 at 1:12 amGo with Nine Inch Nails survivalism or another version of the truth. Great songs, great band. Unfortunately, he’s a liberal shithead and a facist fuck who wouldn’t be caught dead showing support to American soldiers. Songs are great for this though, and the lyrics and definitely be interperated different ways.
December 2nd, 2007 at 1:13 amPat - That Dylan idea was just frightening . . . don’t let artistic control out of your grip for God’s sake . . . I know YA needs more of a hard rock feel and I love the FU song on the trailer - seriously - I even played it for my 15 year old daughter and her eyes got really big - she couldn’t believe mom was listening to that, but she liked the video with the song! We listen to more country around our house - Montgomery Gentry if you go that way at all.
I listened to some of the Rich Ward/Stuck Mojo stuff recommended above and it was really good.
Luke Stricklin has a country song about the streets of Baghdad - he wrote while he was there. The version that he recorded over there is the best - it is raw as opposed to the “polished Nashville” crap.
Song - American by God’s Amazin’ Grace

. . . Dylan sucks though for your movie though - no, no, no!
December 2nd, 2007 at 2:27 amWhats with all of the old stuff? Dylan? Fuck that, its already been done and redone. That stuff was great then but its time is past, and this ain’t Vietnam.

None of the lyrics really apply, but the pace of the songs is more frenetic and keeping with the times…
Something more edgy than these may be more apt, but the pace of the Muse stuff is what I would expect. Machine gun guitar, drums and bass to match the impact of the footage…
December 2nd, 2007 at 2:52 amIs this Tony Scott a liberal or something? I sure hope not!
December 2nd, 2007 at 4:33 amI use to watch Fox & Friends when E.D. Hill was on, can you believe she’s had 8 kids? I recently tuned in and saw Gretchen Carlson and have to agree with you, she doesn’t get it. Ever since that anchor guy from CNN came over I’ve watched Fox less and less. The vibe is gone in the morning.
December 2nd, 2007 at 6:20 amRE: the Tony Scott question. NO ONE, but NO ONE, has any say over the poltical content of the project but me. I have retained all rights and can get out of the deal anytime I want.
The creative issues are not about that - they are about whether they are keeping the episodes RAW and REAL, or trying to Hollywood them up too much. But again, the final say over that is mine, BUT, I often have to battle these people to get them there. They are afraid of “gross” and “dark”, but the point here is to have the audience relive the real experience of the Marines battling Al Qaeda in their capital. I’m not interested in slicking this up in cheesy ways. I hold all the cards. At the end of the day, it’s my way, or the highway.
It’s hard to describe … people who weren’t there just don’t quite have a handle on how to translate the most important truths about being there, so their instinct is just to go for more traditional tv episode stuff - because that’s what they know…it’s the only direction they know how to go in, and fall back on to.
December 2nd, 2007 at 7:35 amPat -
“Raw” is the only way. What you will have are [those] who will say the message you are trying to convey and “expose” in your ~ Young Americans ~ docu is [their] definition of “pornography” (I ALWAYS hear this when the topic of ‘What is pornography?’ is discussed … ‘Violence’ is porn to [them]). [They] can’t handle the raw truth. Good to see you stick by your guns, and the guns of our guys, against the Hollywood mind-set.
I’ve checked out the band Stuck Mojo …
Don’t know what the current hip “terminology” used to describe excellence is these days … But I’ll just say they are fucking bad-asses, and would fit well with the mood/tone of Young Americans. I especially like “I’m American” and “Open Season”.
Someone has re-mixed “Open Season” aimed at CAIR:

December 2nd, 2007 at 8:21 amPat your right about the fall back to what has worked before. You see it in all walks life where some measure of success has been achieved, Many stay with what has gotten them somewhere and never really advance beyond that. Tell them not be afraid to break a few eggs. Years later they can look back and be proud to have taken some risks, I think you will too.
December 2nd, 2007 at 8:32 amLet the Marines you were with pick the majority of tunes. Let them use acceptable choices for promos and such.
I’m taking all of these suggestions quite seriously, and will be reviewing and checking them over the next three days.

“Let the Marines you were with pick the majority of tunes. Let them use acceptable choices for promos and such.”
I agree with that too Steve.
Pat - No matter what you decide on it will be f’n awesome once it is all put together. The good, bad, ugly, raw, beautiful, truth. (I am glad you have the Hollywood background that you do or your work would have never been seen as it is - especially as it is intended to be shown.)
It has to be a huge headache and time consuming to get the whole process fininshed but our bets are on your instincts. Nobody knows their art better than the artist.
Good luck.

Re: Megyn Kelly … Probably the “lawyer” in her coming out.
Re: Romney … I like the guy, and wouldn’t mind seeing him in the Oval Office … But he does seem to have that almost democrat-overly-pretty quality about him. Which is why I like Rudy … He looks like the guy that would wipe the snot and blood on his sleeve after kicking your ass in a fist fight … and then tell the ass-kickee, “Stay the fuck down!”
I tend to think a Romney/Rudy … Rudy/Romney ticket is quite possibly unbeatable. Just my thunks.
December 2nd, 2007 at 10:54 amWell Pat since you mentioned you were undecided, I felt the same way several months ago. No one was really lighting my fire until I saw this…

Somebody got him to start speaking from his heart again and telling his story.
We need a real warrior to finish the GWOT. After watching that video I believe it might change your mind.
I showed it to my former business partner. He is a Bill Clinton loving democrat who thinks Ronald Regan sucked and Bill was the messiah. He can’t stand Hillary.
Anyways he is voting for John McCain now.

December 2nd, 2007 at 3:45 pmPat, Im noticing alot of people bringing up Muse’s music as a suggestion. It is my duty as one of the resident artists here to let you know, although there music is fantastic and I am a huge fan, there music, is the only actual popular anti-bush, anti-iraq song to come from this music generation.
their hit song ‘apocolypse please’ is a scathing assesment of the Iraq war. Lyrics in the song like “Proclaim eternal victory” are direct insults to our Prez.
Anyway, I know most of the songs here by default, are written by musicians that are anti- war anti-govt etc (just like hollywood right?), but for that very specific song they wrote I think they should not be included in Young Americans.
This logic should not exclude a band like Rage Against the Machine, because however anti US and war they are, they did not write a song about Iraq. Not that I am recommending Rage Against the Machine I am just trying to explicate myself.
December 2nd, 2007 at 5:31 pmPat, Im noticing alot of people bringing up Muse’s music as a suggestion. It is my duty as one of the resident artists here to let you know, although there music is fantastic and I am a huge fan, there music, is the only actual popular anti-bush, anti-iraq song to come from this music generation.
It is true that they do lean that direction, but how many “artists” don’t? Its kinda funny that you mention this issue as I wrestled with that when I suggested Muse in the first place. I suggested two songs that had no direct political message, but instead had messages regarding psychological states. I intentionally excluded other Muse Songs like:
Assassin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e87_7fIwCI&feature=related
and
Muse - Time Is Running Out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jI0LOs6vW4&feature=related
I did not include them as they have an overt political message, and I did not want to waste time explaining to Pat what I am about to explain. If you watch the Time is Running Out video you will see that they are implying that the military and government are trying to kill us all. While I have seen this politically correct storyline told to the U.S. public since the late 70’s I’d say that we could use this song to tell our story with a little creative editing. Would be interesting to take it and make it our own. Lord knows the left has pilfered many right wing ideas and turned them around for their own purposes.
I have contemplated asking my brother, who is a film editor, to re-edit the song to other video that would show how the main stream media’s lack of objective reporting and outright collusion with our enemies is killing our SOLDIERS. If you have the ability to change the images in your head when you listen to the song it is easy to see how the words in the song can apply to our enemies and their complicit allies that are within the press in our country. That is why music television can have such a dramatic effect in getting out ones message. Some people don’t listen to the words, but the images can essentially force them to get it.
That being said, it was more the tempo, pace and musical skill set that Muse music entails that I thought might help to convey the visuals of this important story. For that fact you could strip out the vocals altogether as it is the speed, pace, highs, lows and volume of the instrumentals that convey the emotions to me. Anyhow, it was just an idea. Its all good.

December 2nd, 2007 at 7:19 pm@007 bodies would be a kick ass song to put in the series, I agree.
Sorry Pat, I go to a conservative school so I really can’t help ya out with the crazy liberal rants but I’ll see what I can do with friends heh
December 2nd, 2007 at 7:46 pmterry tate -
I feel ya bro. It would be nice to use their own ideas and art against them (the libs). I was just worried about people misinterpreting the meaning of YA because of ignorance. They might think oh man this series is so anti - war just because of the music (my generation is not very smart). Anyway I guess that is a stupid argument because those kind of people arent going to get the point of any of this. You sold me.
So I guess if we are going to use muse…
Got to recommend MUSE - Knights of Cydonia
“NO ONE IS GONNA TAKE ME ALIVE, THE TIME HAS COME TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT!!!” (excerpt)
December 2nd, 2007 at 8:07 pmTed Nugent is very pro USA and pro military. I bet he could come up with some new songs specifically for the film.
December 2nd, 2007 at 9:27 pmI understand he has played over in Iraq a bunch.
Bet he could rework the song ‘Damn Yankees’ specifically for the current action. He played it a bunch during Gulf War part 1, shot flaming arrows into Saddam cutouts in concert.
I hope you are going to be able to use the Blood for Blood songs in the movie. Man, it is perfect. Boston hardcore is the anthem for fighting.
December 2nd, 2007 at 10:33 pmOnly problem with Blood For Blood is that some or all of them are anti-war.
December 2nd, 2007 at 11:06 pmThat suxs.
I had several Godsmack songs that I really like and would fit well but they are also anti-war so I did not bother suggesting them.
It is hard to find artists that are pro.

December 3rd, 2007 at 9:02 amSorry to just come back here to drop a link but I think this gets across much of the reason I think Rich Ward and ANY of his bands would be able to make perfect soundtrack material.
December 3rd, 2007 at 10:37 amhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzGOvTwoUWk
It’s gotta be gritty and powerful somehow, and speak to more than one theme.
Drowning Pool’s “Love and War” works on both counts.
You might also enjoy the sound of Chevelle’s “Get Some”, and many of their other songs.
Chevelle has many that could work, and they’re the sort of “sound” I think works best for what you are trying to get across.
For something a little slower, try Jason Boland and his song “Proud Souls”.
December 3rd, 2007 at 11:59 amOh yea, don’t forget to check out the song “Forfeit” by Chevelle….the “I want to fight, I want to fight” part might get the idea across as to who these young Americans are.

Everlast is self-hating muslim ‘re-vert’, and we all know Audioslave are ‘raging’ commies.
No 60’s or 70’s anti-American shit.
Most of the punk scenes are full of whiny brats who’d piss their pants if someone came at them with murder in their eye.
Rap sucks. Rap-rock sucks even more.
Country won’t work.
The only thing that really fits is rock or metal.
I definitely wouldn’t want the theme song to be from some piece of shit who thinks the ability to sing gives him the right to piss all over the men and women who make sure he doesn’t have to worry about some wookie-looking bastard chopping his head off for offending the Prophet (piss be upon him).
Shit, this is harder that I thought.

That’d work.
@Pat Dollard:
Try contacting John Ringo, the guy who writes the Ghost series among many others. His Posleen and Council Wars books are probably his best known, though. He’s a music fanatic, and good people. I’m sure he could come up with the perfect song. Trust me when I say you don’t have to worry about him being a leftist.
