Polls Open For Chavez’s “Dictator For Life” Showdown
Polling started in Venezuela Sunday in a controversial referendum called by President Hugo Chavez aimed at allowing him to remain leader for life.
Voters were being asked to approve 69 changes to the constitution that included doing away with presidential term limits and turning their country into a “socialist economy.”
Polling station were to remain open to 4:00 pm (2000 GMT).
More than 100,000 soldiers were deployed across Venezuela to prevent violence many feared could erupt because of the projected closeness of the result.
Survey suggested the country’s 16 million voters were nearly evenly split over the proposed measures.
Chavez has warned that, if he sees any meddling by the United States during or after the vote, he will halt all oil exports.
The 53-year-old president has said he wants to rule “until 2050″ and thrown all his weight behind the referendum, which if passed would permit him to stand for re-election once his current term ends in 2013.

December 2nd, 2007 at 3:56 amNice to see Jimmy the humanitarian showing his true colors…

Jimmy smokes crack and I don’t care…
Just make him and his master go away
Is this another Hitler in the making. Failed coup in 1992. Becomes President in 1998. Now asking the people to drastically change the constitution. All that’s missing is a book about his struggle.
December 2nd, 2007 at 5:33 amI would love to see some predictions…
1. He wins and we get Castro Jr. til 2054 and are held over a barrel until then.
2. He loses slightly but pulls a Musharefesque type of emergency martial law(note the 100K troops spread around the county) and has to retain power indefinately for the good of the “STATE”.
3. He loses, martial law, picks a fight with Columbia over refugees and who has the best drug lords, and this magically draws in the US into a war with MiniMe Dictator. Game over Hugo.
4. He loses, martial law, stops the oil, the cia and some B2 stop by to see his palace. Game Over Hugo.
Your thoughts?
December 2nd, 2007 at 5:59 amRigged elections, Hugo isnt going anywhere. Massive rioting in the streets of Venezuela but they accomplish nothing. Just my opinion. Hope he truely loses but its not likely
December 2nd, 2007 at 6:57 amI agree with Kurt. Prepare for the backlash. We should see a large number of Venezuelan immigrants on the streets in Washington DC before spring.
Also don’t be surprised when it comes out that Chavez is funneling support to the Leftest Narco-terrorists to destabilize Columbia.
December 2nd, 2007 at 7:18 amHey look…Chavez, Castro, and Carter. It must be a family photo. All that they need to do now is include Ahmadinejad, bin Laden, and Putin and the photo will be complete.
Oh… and have that little fat puke, Muktadir Al Sadir take the picture…birds of a feather flocking together…how dangerously quaint.
