One day, a black boy was disturbing class (repeat offender, I believe) and the teacher, who was white, sent him down to her office. She (also white) took the proper disciplinary action and I believe suspended the boy.

Well, the boy’s mother accused her of racism and called the NAACP, who, in turn, called my mother and challenged her decision.

In response to their challenge, she said something along the lines of: “Who are you advancing, the boy who was disturbing class or the twenty other African-American students in that class whose learning was being hindered?”

I think there has been a miscommunication.

Everyone agrees with your contention that not all crimes are hate crimes. The contention of this piece is not that this was a hate crime per se, but to call attention to the fact that it goes unreported, whereas the Jena 6 case was a “hate crime” that Jesse, Al, and the gang jumped on.

The point is simply to say: where are they now? and to demonstrate the absurdity of the Jena 6 thing by comparison, and less to fall into the same trip in reverse.
