Michael Yon has posted a recent report from General Barry R. McCaffrey on the security situation in Iraq. Gen. McCaffrey visited the region earlier this month, and compiled this report from his own observations and input from dozens of military leaders including Admiral Fallon, General Petraeus, and General Odierno, just to name a few.

From the report:

PURPOSE:

This memo provides feedback on my strategic and operational assessment of current security operations in Iraq. Look forward to providing lectures to faculty and cadet national security seminars.

Will provide follow-on comprehensive report with attachments of current unclassified data and graphs documenting the current counter-insurgency situation in Iraq.

In this report he talks about the dramatic drop in violence, the tactical defeat of Al Qaeda in Iraq, the Iraqi Security Forces, refugees, the economy, the Sunni, the Shia, the Kurds, the incompetence of a central government…everything IRAQ.

Very interesting read, check it out at Yon’s website.

    Sounds promising, I think.

I disagree with his assesment of Iraq as a civil war. And diplomacy with Iran or Syria is a pipedream. Think Tet 68 for a realistic perspective.

His suggestion for doubling the Army is a good one. We need more active and reserve/Guard troops. That’s going to be a hard sell in a school sytstem that emphasizes a westaphobuia and hate America first indoctrination before the virtues of Duty, Honor and Country.

I’m no fan of McCaffry. I’d like to see a competing study by the military brain trust at Fox.

I think McCaffrey panders to much to his MSLSD bosses way too much and I put little stock in his assesments. JMHO.

Sounds fine. Shows why we should still work at it, and how we could fix some of the current problems (in particular, with the overstretched Army, according to the report).

Rport seems to be fair except for the BS on Rumsfeld’s tenure…I too would like to see a report from another analyst!
