AQ Suicide Bomber Kills Those Lining Up To Join “Awakening”
A tribal sheik in Diyala ready to join “Concerned Citizens” aka “The Awakening”.
BAQUBA, Iraq — A suicide bomber killed 13 Iraqis and a US soldier and wounded 25 others, including 10 American troops, in an attack in the town of Kanan, south of Diyala’s provincial capital Baquba, officials said.
The US military said the attack took place when a dismounted patrol was waiting to enter a building where a city council meeting was to be held.
“A suicide bomber approached and detonated the explosives” he was wearing, the military said in a statement to AFP.
“There was one coalition forces soldier killed. Also wounded were 10 coalition forces,” it said, but gave a lower death toll of five Iraqis killed.
Baquba police captain Ahmed Mahmud said the bomber had blown himself up at the office of a local group fighting Al-Qaeda in Diyala, adding that 13 Iraqis were killed.
He said the bomber attacked when volunteers had gathered to register themselves as members of the Awakening group.
