Man…this one hit me in the face this morning…

When Cpl. Dustin Lee (pictured with Lex above) fell, his dog never left his side.

The family of Dustin Lee, a Quitman native and U.S. Marine killed in a rocket propelled grenade attack March 21 in Iraq, is celebrating now that their lobbying for Lee’s K-9 partner, Lex, has paid off.

Lex, the 8-year old German Shepherd who was seriously injured in the attack but has since recovered, will be the subject of a joyous reunion on Dec. 21 at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany, Ga. Lee’s family is scheduled to pick up Lex exactly nine months after the attack. “We knew that’s what Dustin would have wanted out of this,” Jerome Lee, Dustin Lee’s father told a reporter from the Associated Press. “He knew we would take care of Lex and love him, just like our own.”

At the time of the attack earlier this year, Dustin Lee was detached from Marine Corps Police Department, Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany and attached to the 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion, Regimental Combat Team 6, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force.

“We are proud to have had Lex serve alongside Marines here and around the world,” said MCLB Albany Commanding Officer Col. C.N. Haliday. “The sacrifice Cpl. Lee has made and that of Lex will not be forgotten. I am glad to be able to support the Lee family, not just in the adoption of Lex, but also to reestablish their connection to their beloved son Dustin.”

    RIP Cpl Lee.

Just curious, but what kind of jobs do they use dogs for? Sniffing out explosives, perhaps?

    @JayMS:

They can sniff out explosives, drugs, and people hiding.

They also tend to scare the shit out of most Third-worlders (sometimes literally). Not many cultures keep large dogs as pets. Makes for a great interrogation tool.

    Thanks Tic…

That’s a very touching photo and tribute to Cpl Lee as well. I’d hate to piss either of them off. My prayers go out to the family as well.

Well said Bashman. This one hits ya in the face….

German shepherd-dogs. Some folks hate them, some folks love them.
My grand-dad used to bread these extremely intelligent dogs.

I was 21 and given up, had to get used to a wheel-chair. I proofed the doctors wrong, my greatest strength in this battle was our german shepherd-dog. She (called Meta) just tricked my out of that darn wheel-chair. I felt on my face so often, it drove my parents crazy.
One day I managed to stand on my legs for 10 seconds. That was the beginning of my victory and six months later I WALKED into the doctors-office.

Still got a picture of this dog. She died too young, only 8 years old. And when I see a fine example of this breed, my heart goes faster. (As it did when I saw the picture here.)

My eyes teared up after actually reading the story cause I know how faitfull these dogs can be. Didn’t second guess the words;”When Cpl. Dustin Lee fell, his dog never left his side”. That’s how they are to the person they trust, as to the family’s who own a german shepherd. (My uncle was saved by a sheperd-dog at the age of 4 while nearly drowning.)

My prayers to Cpl. Lee’s family. And applauding all those who made this beautifull gesture possible.

Belgian Shepherds are smart enough to balance your check book (if they had thumbs) and love to work.
In Qatar the bomb dogs were a real thing of beauty.
The arabs Really Really don’t like dogs.
One of the things they hate about Americans is that to us dogs are our family members our best friends.
Culturally they think dogs are unclean.(Ayatollah Khomeini was said to really love cats, really really)
Saddam had episodes of torturing stray dogs as a child and nobody thought anything of it.

There is people in America that want to put Vick down for how he killed some dogs.
    Who you gonna trust?
    Someone who doesn’t like dogs?
